To set your phone’s clock automatically, use the date-and-time settings for your device: on iPhone, turn on Set Automatically in Settings; on Android, enable Automatic date and time and, if available, Automatic time zone. You can also choose a time zone manually on either platform. The exact Android options vary by device.
Set the time and time zone on iPhone
Use automatic settings
- Open Settings > General > Date & Time.
- Turn on Set Automatically. This sets the date and time based on the time zone.
- For automatic time-zone detection, open Settings > Privacy & Security > Location Services > System Services and turn on Setting Time Zone.
Apple advises having an internet connection and current software when troubleshooting automatic date and time. If Apple reports that time-zone information was updated, restart the iPhone and any paired Apple Watch. See Apple Support’s instructions for time and time-zone settings.
Choose a time zone or set the clock manually
- Go to Settings > General > Date & Time.
- Turn off Set Automatically.
- Tap Time Zone, search for a city, and select it. To set the date or time yourself, adjust the controls shown on that screen.

Use automatic settings
- Open the Clock app.
- Tap More > Settings > Change date and time.
- Turn on Automatic date and time. If shown, also turn on Automatic time zone.
Automatic time-zone detection may use the device’s location. The available switches and labels depend on the device: some Wi-Fi-only tablets use location without showing a separate Use location setting, and some devices do not offer automatic time-zone setting. Google documents this route in Android Help.
Choose a time zone manually
- Open Clock > More > Settings > Change date and time.
- If available, turn off Set automatically.
- Tap Time zone and select the zone you want.
If those labels do not appear, search the device’s Settings for date and time or consult the manufacturer’s instructions. Android menus and manual-setting availability vary by model.

Why automatic time or time-zone controls may be unavailable
- iPhone: Carrier or regional availability can affect automatic settings. A Screen Time passcode or a corporate configuration profile may also restrict the control.
- Android: Automatic time-zone options differ by manufacturer and device; some devices do not provide an automatic time-zone setting.
- Location: If automatic zone detection is wrong on iPhone, check that Setting Time Zone is enabled under Location Services’ System Services. Android may also use location, depending on the device.
These differences can explain a missing or dimmed option without indicating that the phone is malfunctioning.
