Select the device you want under Output for playback and under Input for recording. In this Windows workflow, selecting a device in either section sets it as the system default.
Set the default output and input in Windows 11
- Connect, pair, or turn on the speakers, headphones, or microphone you want to use.
- Open Start > Settings > System > Sound.
- Under Output, select the speakers or headphones for playback.
- Under Input, select the microphone or other recording device.
- To check the microphone, select it under Input and open its properties. Choose Start test, speak, then select Stop test and Play to hear the sample. See Microsoft’s microphone setup and testing instructions.
For a quick playback change, select the sound icon on the taskbar and choose an output device. Use Sound settings when you need to set or confirm both playback and microphone devices.
Set the defaults in Windows 10
- Open Start > Settings > System > Sound.
- Choose the playback device under Output and the microphone under Input.
- If Settings does not show the control you need, open Control Panel > Hardware and Sound > Sound. Use the Playback tab for speakers or headphones, or Recording for a microphone. Select the device and choose the option to set it as default.
Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025. Microsoft says PCs continue to work, but no longer receive free Windows Update software updates, technical assistance, or security fixes. See Microsoft’s Windows sound troubleshooting guidance.
When an app uses a different speaker or microphone
A correct Windows default does not necessarily override the audio device selected inside a meeting or calling app. Open that app’s audio settings and choose the intended speaker and microphone. Microsoft also documents setting a separate communications device for communications apps in its Surface audio guidance.

If an app cannot use the microphone, check Windows permission settings. In Windows 11, go to Settings > Privacy & security > Microphone and confirm microphone access and the individual app’s access are enabled. In Windows 10, check the corresponding microphone controls under Settings > Privacy.
Troubleshoot a missing, disabled, or silent device
The wrong listed device is active
Select the intended device under Output or Input in Sound settings. For a fast playback switch, use the taskbar sound selector.

The device appears but is disabled
Open its properties or the Playback or Recording tab in the Sound Control Panel. If Windows offers an enable option, enable the device and select it as the default.
The device does not appear
- Check that it is connected, powered on, or paired.
- In Device Manager, inspect Sound, video and game controllers. If appropriate, show hidden devices or scan for hardware changes.
- Install a compatible driver from the PC or audio-device manufacturer. Microsoft’s missing audio device guidance covers detection and driver checks.
The selected output produces no sound
Check that the device is not muted and that its volume is raised. Confirm the selected output is actually a speaker or headphone device—for example, a monitor may have no built-in speakers. Device properties, audio enhancements, and driver problems can also affect playback; Microsoft’s no-sound troubleshooting steps address these causes.

The selected microphone is not heard by an app
Check its physical mute switch and input level, confirm Windows microphone permission, and verify the app’s own microphone choice. Use the Input test described above to record and play back a sample; this helps distinguish a microphone signal problem from an app-routing or permission issue. Microsoft’s microphone troubleshooting guidance provides further checks.
