A sound stop-loss plan starts with the most you can afford to lose, not with a fashionable percentage. Set a dollar loss budget, place the stop where your trade idea would be wrong, and calculate the position size from the distance between entry and stop. Then apply portfolio limits so several correlated positions cannot create one oversized loss. A stop is only a trigger: a stop order can fill at a materially different price, while a stop-limit order can fail to fill altogether.
Set the loss budget before choosing a stop
Decide the maximum loss you will accept before entering the position. Use a dollar amount for a single trade and a separate aggregate limit for the portfolio. The budget should include commissions, funding or borrowing charges, and a realistic allowance for slippage where those costs apply.
Once the budget is fixed, position size follows from the planned entry and stop:
Position size = allowed dollar loss ÷ (entry price − stop price)

For a long position, the entry is above the stop. For a short position, use the absolute difference between the stop and entry. Round down to a tradable whole share or contract, and check the result against the venue’s minimum order size.
Illustrative stock calculation
Suppose a share is planned at $50, the trade thesis is invalid below $47, and the maximum loss is $120. The risk per share is $3, so the mathematical size is 40 shares. If you reserve $10 for commissions and slippage, use $110 as the price-risk budget: $110 ÷ $3 = 36.66, so 36 shares is the conservative size. The figures are an example of the method, not a recommended risk level.
Illustrative crypto calculation
Assume a token is bought at $2.40 and the invalidation level is $2.16. A $75 loss budget divided by the $0.24 distance gives 312.5 units; round down to 312 units before fees. If the exchange charges funding, trading fees, or liquidation-related costs, reduce the size again so those costs do not consume the entire budget.

Place the stop where the trade thesis is invalidated
A stop should answer a specific question: at what price would the reason for owning this position no longer be true? For a stock, that might be a break below a level that supported the earnings or technical thesis. For crypto, it could be a loss of a market structure level, a failed catalyst, or a breach of a pre-defined range. The level must be chosen before the order is submitted so that position size can be adjusted instead of moving the stop to fit an arbitrary position.

Allow for ordinary volatility
If the stop sits inside normal intraday movement, a brief fluctuation can trigger it even when the thesis remains intact. The SEC explains that short-term fluctuations may activate a stop and warns that the execution price may differ significantly from the stop price. Its Investor Bulletin states: “The stop price is not the guaranteed execution price for a stop order.”
Review recent trading ranges, the distance between bids and offers, and the depth available near your planned level. A thinly traded asset can jump through a stop more easily than a highly liquid one. Widening a stop to avoid noise increases risk per unit; the correct response is normally to reduce the position size, not to keep the original size.

Account for liquidity and gaps
In a fast market, the next available quote may be far beyond the trigger. Stocks can gap between trading sessions after news, and a stop may execute at the first available price when the market reopens. Crypto venues often trade continuously, but their order books, maintenance windows, and trigger rules differ. Check the specific venue rather than assuming that a stop will behave identically everywhere.
Understand the three main stop order types
| Order type | What happens at the trigger | Price control | Slippage exposure | Non-execution risk | Useful when |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Stop-market | Becomes a market order and seeks the best available prices | None beyond the trigger instruction | High in gaps, thin books, or rapid moves | Lower than with a stop-limit, but a fill is not guaranteed in every extraordinary condition | Exiting is more important than controlling the exact price |
| Stop-limit | Becomes a limit order at the trigger | Sets the worst acceptable execution price | Limited by the chosen limit price | Material: price can move past the limit and leave the position open | You can accept non-execution in exchange for a price boundary |
| Trailing stop | Maintains a trigger that follows a favorable move by a fixed amount or percentage | Controls the trail distance, not the eventual fill | Still exposed to gaps and fast markets | Can be triggered by normal volatility; a stop-limit trail can also fail to fill | You want the stop to ratchet with gains without manually replacing it |
Stop-market orders
A stop-market order is activated when the market reaches the trigger and then becomes a market order. The trigger is not a promise of execution at that number. In a rapid decline, the fill can be substantially lower for a long position; in a short position, it can be substantially higher.
Stop-limit orders
A stop-limit order adds a limit price after activation. That protects against accepting a fill beyond your limit, but it also creates the possibility that no order fills. An unfilled stop-limit leaves the original risk in place, so you need a contingency for monitoring, cancellation, and manual execution.

Trailing stops
A trailing stop can follow a favorable move by a fixed dollar amount or a percentage. It moves in the favorable direction only; it does not move back when the market retreats. A trailing distance that is too tight can be activated by ordinary volatility, while a wide trail gives back more of an unrealized gain. Confirm whether your venue calculates the trail from last trade, bid, ask, mark price, or another reference.

How to place and verify a stock stop
Broker interfaces use different labels and order rules, so use the following as a process rather than a promise that every screen will look the same.
- Define the trade. Record the symbol, direction, entry, invalidation price, dollar loss budget, and calculated quantity.
- Open the order ticket. Select the sell side for a long position or the buy side for a short position, then choose the broker’s stop, stop-market, stop-limit, or trailing-stop type.
- Enter the trigger and any limit. For a stop-limit, enter both the stop trigger and the limit price. Keep the relationship clear: a sell limit normally cannot be above the stop trigger, while a buy limit normally cannot be below it. Follow the platform’s validation rules.
- Choose duration. A day order expires at the end of the session; a good-til-canceled instruction remains subject to the broker’s stated maximum duration. Confirm whether the stop is active outside regular trading hours.
- Read the disclosure. Review the estimated trigger method, possible execution prices, handling during halts, and whether the order is available for the security and account type.
- Submit and confirm. Verify that the order status is working, the quantity is correct, and the trigger is attached to the intended position. A ticket left in draft or rejected by the broker provides no protection.
- Reconcile after fills. If only part of the entry fills, check whether the stop quantity adjusted automatically. If not, resize or replace the protective order.
When selecting a stop type and price in volatile conditions, FINRA Regulatory Notice 21-12 says firms should provide information about those conditions. Use that information and the firm’s current order documentation to confirm how triggers, gaps, halts, and extended-hours trading are handled.
How to set stops for crypto positions
Crypto requires the same loss-budget and invalidation logic, with additional attention to volatility, leverage, venue design, and custody. The CFTC describes crypto assets this way: “Their value is completely derived by market forces of supply and demand, and they are more volatile than traditional fiat currencies.” It also warns that volatility can amplify both profits and losses in margined futures contracts.
Check the venue’s trigger rules
Before submitting an order, determine whether the exchange triggers stops from the last traded price, mark price, index price, bid, or ask. Check whether stop orders remain active during maintenance, what happens when a contract is delisted, and whether a conditional order is held on the venue or in your trading software. A trigger based on one price source can activate earlier or later than a chart using another.

Separate spot and leveraged positions
With spot holdings, the planned stop normally limits the intended sale price, subject to execution and venue risk. With margin or perpetual futures, liquidation can occur before the stop if collateral falls below the maintenance requirement, and funding or leverage can enlarge the loss. If the planned stop distance already exceeds the dollar budget at the smallest practical position, reduce leverage, reduce size, or do not take the trade.
Plan for thin liquidity
Use order-book depth and recent traded volume to judge whether the size can exit near the trigger. A stop-market order may sweep several price levels. A stop-limit may remain unfilled while the market continues away. For a large position, splitting entries and exits or using a smaller total size can reduce market impact, but it cannot remove gap or venue risk.
Apply portfolio-level risk limits
Individual stops do not prevent a portfolio loss when several positions respond to the same event. Add limits that operate above the trade level. These are implementation choices for your plan, not regulator-mandated percentages.
| Limit | How to define it | Action when reached |
|---|---|---|
| Per-position loss | Maximum planned dollar loss from entry to stop, including a cost allowance | Reduce quantity, move to cash, or reject the trade if the required size is impractical |
| Correlated exposure | Aggregate positions that are likely to move together, such as several technology shares or multiple crypto assets tied to the same market factor | Cap the combined exposure or treat the group as one trade for sizing |
| Daily loss | Total realized and estimated open losses over the trading day | Stop opening new positions for the rest of the day after the limit is reached |
| Weekly loss | Cumulative loss across the chosen week, including fees and funding where relevant | Pause new trades, review the plan, and resume only under a pre-written rule |
| Leverage or margin | Maximum borrowed exposure or minimum collateral buffer | Reduce leverage before a stop becomes the only line of defense |
Measure correlation honestly
Positions can be correlated even when their tickers are different. A broad equity sell-off can affect many stocks at once; a crypto-market shock can move several tokens together. Count the dollar risk of the cluster, not just the risk shown on each order ticket. If five positions can all lose at the same time, their combined stop losses are the relevant stress case.
Use a trading pause as a circuit breaker
Write down what happens after the daily or weekly limit is reached: cancel unfilled entries, disable automated strategies, and prohibit new discretionary trades until the specified review time. A pause prevents an attempt to win back losses from silently increasing exposure.

Stocks and crypto: where the risk controls differ
| Factor | Stocks | Crypto |
|---|---|---|
| Liquidity | Ranges from deep exchange-listed markets to thin small-cap issues; spreads and depth vary by symbol and session | Ranges widely by token and venue; fragmented liquidity can produce different prices and fills |
| Trading hours | Usually organized around an exchange’s regular session, with optional extended hours subject to broker rules | Many venues operate continuously, but maintenance and outages can interrupt trading; verify the specific venue |
| Gap risk | Overnight news can create a gap through the stop at the next available quote | Continuous trading can reduce traditional overnight gaps, but abrupt jumps, outages, and thin books can still bypass a trigger |
| Venue rules | Broker and exchange rules determine eligible order types, trigger sources, duration, and halt handling | Each exchange or derivatives venue sets its own trigger source, conditional-order behavior, maintenance policy, and liquidation process |
| Leverage | Available through margin and derivatives accounts with account-specific requirements | Often available in derivatives and margin products; leverage and liquidation can amplify losses before a stop fills |
| Portfolio correlation | Common sectors, indexes, and macro events can make apparently different shares move together | Tokens may be highly sensitive to the same market-wide liquidity and sentiment shocks |
Manage the stop after entry
Do not widen it to rescue a losing trade
Moving a stop farther away changes the original loss budget. If new information genuinely changes the thesis, close the position and reassess it as a new trade rather than silently increasing the old risk. If the stop is too close because volatility changed, the disciplined choices are to reduce size, exit, or accept that the trade no longer fits the plan.
Move a stop only under a written rule
A rule might allow a stop to move upward for a long position after a new support level forms, or to trail behind a favorable move. The stop should never move farther from the current market merely because the position is losing. Record the reason and the new dollar risk before making the change.
Recheck after venue or market changes
Review stop behavior after a broker changes its order system, an exchange changes its trigger methodology, a security becomes subject to a trading halt, or abnormal volatility develops. Confirm that the order is still working, that quantity matches the position, and that the account has sufficient collateral. FINRA Regulatory Notice 21-12 emphasizes giving customers information about volatile conditions when they select a stop type and price; use the current disclosures supplied by your firm.

- Using a universal percentage: A fixed percentage ignores the asset’s normal range and the trade’s invalidation point. Define the level first, then size the position.
- Confusing trigger with fill: A stop-market order can execute far from its trigger. Include slippage in the budget and size smaller in fast or thin markets.
- Choosing stop-limit for certainty: The limit controls price but can leave the position open. Use it only when you can accept non-execution and have a contingency.
- Ignoring partial fills: A stop quantity that exceeds the filled position can create an unintended short sale; a stop smaller than the position leaves residual risk. Reconcile quantities.
- Forgetting fees and funding: Costs reduce the amount available for price movement. Reserve for them before calculating units.
- Setting a crypto stop from the wrong price source: A chart based on last trade may not match a mark-price trigger. Verify the venue’s definition.
- Leaving leverage unchanged: Liquidation may precede the stop. Reduce leverage or collateralize the position so the planned exit remains possible.
- Stacking correlated trades: Separate tickets can create one concentrated bet. Aggregate their potential loss and cap the group.
- Assuming a stop works during every halt or outage: Ask the broker or exchange how orders are handled in those conditions and maintain a manual emergency procedure where practical.
- Failing to verify activation: A rejected, expired, or draft order is not protection. Check the working status after every submission and replacement.
Worked planning examples
Stock with a gap allowance
An investor plans to buy 100 shares at $30 with a stop at $28. The nominal price risk is $200. If the investor’s maximum acceptable loss is $150, the position is too large before costs: $150 ÷ $2 allows only 75 shares. Because an overnight gap could produce a fill below $28, the investor may choose fewer than 75 shares after reserving a slippage allowance. The stop level remains tied to the thesis; the quantity absorbs the uncertainty.
Crypto position without leverage
A trader budgets $90 for a spot position, enters at $1.80, and identifies $1.62 as invalidation. Risk per unit is $0.18, so the mathematical maximum is 500 units. After estimating fees and a possible execution difference, the trader can round down to a smaller quantity. If the exchange’s minimum order or available liquidity makes that size impractical, the trade does not meet the plan.
Correlated portfolio check
Three positions each have a planned $60 loss, but all are exposed to the same market factor. Treating them as three independent risks understates the stress case: a simultaneous move could cost about $180 before slippage. If the portfolio’s aggregate limit is lower, reduce or remove one or more positions even though each individual stop is correctly placed.
Quick Recap
A pre-trade and post-trade checklist
- Have I written the trade thesis and the exact price that invalidates it?
- What is the maximum dollar loss for this position after fees, funding, and plausible slippage?
- Does the quantity come from that budget and the stop distance rather than from a desired investment amount?
- Is the stop outside ordinary noise while still close enough to preserve the planned risk?
- Which order type fits the priority: execution, price control, or an automatically adjusting trail?
- Could a stop-limit fail to execute in a gap or fast market, and do I have a response?
- What price source, session, duration, and halt policy does this broker or exchange use?
- Is leverage low enough that liquidation will not precede the planned stop?
- How much correlated exposure already exists in the portfolio?
- What daily and weekly loss limits stop me from adding risk after a losing sequence?
- After submission, did I verify the order is working and the quantity matches the filled position?
