Claude for Government uses prepaid usage increments with a hard agency spending cap. Administrators can set spend and model limits for user groups, allocate spending across departments, review usage by user and model, and receive alerts as the balance runs low. Anthropic’s public materials describe these controls but do not publish the government console’s exact menu path or setting steps, so use your agency’s console or account team for the operational workflow.

How spending limits work

Anthropic describes Claude for Government as a prepaid service: agencies purchase usage in fixed increments, subject to a hard not-to-exceed cap. The offer has no per-seat fee, but public materials do not list the price, increment sizes, or a standard limit schedule. Agencies must contact Anthropic sales for pricing details. See Anthropic’s Claude for Government page and its government availability announcement.

Within that overall agency commitment, administrators can define user tiers with spend and model limits for each group, and allocate and control spending across departments. Administrators can also track usage by user and model and receive alerts before the committed balance runs low. The sources do not specify alert thresholds or whether administrators can customize them.

Set or change limits in your government deployment

Anthropic’s public documentation does not identify the exact Claude for Government console menus, fields, or save procedure for setting limits. Do not assume that instructions for the general API Console match your government deployment. Sign in to your organization’s Claude for Government admin console and use the controls available for your account; if the relevant settings are unclear or unavailable, ask your Anthropic account team to confirm the workflow for your agency.

When configuring the policy, align the user tiers and model limits with the agency’s spending allocation across departments. The published materials establish that these controls are available, but do not prescribe tier names, dollar amounts, model eligibility rules, or a recommended allocation formula.

Review usage in Claude for Government

Anthropic says government administrators can review usage by user and model and get low-balance alerts. Its public materials do not specify the government report’s navigation path, chart names, date or model filters, export options, or whether cost data appears alongside usage. Confirm those details in the agency console or with the account team rather than applying general API Console instructions without verification.

How general Anthropic API Console reports work

Anthropic separately documents reporting for its general API Console. These are useful instructions only if your organization is using that Console; they do not establish that Claude for Government has the same screens or filters.

  1. In the API Console, open Usage or Cost from the navigation.
  2. Select a workspace or all workspaces, then choose a model and reporting period. For Usage, you can also select an API key.
  3. Review the charts and totals. Usage reports include input and output token counts and rate-limited requests; cost reports include model costs and tool-use costs.
  4. Export the displayed report to CSV if needed.

Anthropic says general Console reports cannot currently be broken down by individual user. That limitation is documented for those reports; it should not be read as contradicting Anthropic’s separate statement that Claude for Government administrators can track usage by user and model. The general report workflow and its limitations are documented in Anthropic’s Usage and Cost API Console help article.

Who can view reports

For general API Console reports, Anthropic lists the Developer, Billing, and Admin roles as able to view usage and cost reports. Its roles and permissions guide says organization Billing holders can view cost, usage, and limit values across workspaces, while Admins can manage users and role assignments. These role descriptions concern the general Console; verify role names and permissions for the government deployment with your organization.

Purchase route and deployment context

Agencies can purchase Claude for Government directly from Anthropic or procure it through Carahsoft. Anthropic says a separate cloud-provider relationship is not required to get started. Procurement route and billing arrangement matter: the available sources do not establish that government service spending is administered through AWS billing.

Anthropic’s June 2024 announcement about Claude 3 Haiku and Sonnet in AWS Marketplace for the US Intelligence Community and AWS GovCloud is historical availability context, not evidence that those AWS arrangements share Claude for Government’s agency cap or admin reports. Anthropic also says core Enterprise features—including projects, artifacts, integrations, audit logs, and admin controls—are available in Claude for Government.
