Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →In Automation 360, set a Bot Runner’s screen resolution in Administration > Settings > Devices, under Resolution settings for a device session. Choose a predefined resolution or Custom, enter the width and height, and save. This Control Room value is used when an RDP-based deployment creates a new device session. A regular deployment continues to use the resolution already configured on the device.
For reliable screen-dependent automation, match the Bot Creator and Bot Runner resolution, display scaling, and application zoom. Resolution by itself does not guarantee identical pixels or coordinates.
Before changing anything: identify the deployment type
Automation Anywhere uses different resolution behavior depending on how the bot runs:
| Deployment | Which resolution is used? | Where to configure it |
|---|---|---|
| RDP-based deployment | The resolution requested when the Control Room creates the device session | Control Room device-session resolution settings |
| Regular deployment | The resolution already active in the device session | Windows or the existing device session |
The Control Room setting is not a global override for regular deployments. If a bot runs in an ordinary Windows session, changing the RDP session value will not change that session’s display.

Set resolution for an Automation 360 RDP session
- Sign in to Control Room with permission to change device and administration settings.
- Open Administration > Settings > Devices.
- Locate Resolution settings for a device session and select Edit.
- Open the Screen resolution list and choose a predefined value.
- If the required size is not listed, choose Custom and enter the required horizontal and vertical values.
- Save the setting.
The setting is applied when an RDP device session is created. It does not resize an already running session automatically.
Optional enforcement controls
Depending on your governance needs, the same settings area can include controls to:
- Enforce this screen resolution for existing device sessions. Use this when the platform exposes the enforcement option, but expect the effective change to require a new session.
- Do not allow devices to override resolution settings. Use this to prevent device-level changes from replacing the Control Room value.
Enforcement applies to new device sessions rather than reliably repairing sessions that already exist. If the Bot Runner still reports the old size, disconnect and recreate the device session before testing again.
Configure a device-level resolution
Automation 360 can also expose resolution controls at the device level. For that value to take effect, the Control Room setting must allow devices to override resolution settings. On the device configuration, select a predefined resolution or enter custom width and height values, then save.

This device-level approach is still limited to RDP-based deployments. It does not replace the active resolution of a regular Windows deployment.
Match the Bot Creator and Bot Runner display
A bot recorded on one display configuration can fail even when the nominal resolution appears similar. Compare all of the following on the computer where the bot was created and the Bot Runner session:
- Screen width and height.
- Windows display scaling (DPI).
- Application zoom, such as browser or SAP Logon zoom.
- Number and arrangement of monitors.
- Whether the session uses an RDP display driver.
Use the same configuration while recording and running whenever actions depend on screen position, captured pixels, or physical mouse and keyboard behavior. A different RDP display driver can produce slightly different pixel values at the same resolution and scaling, reducing image-match percentages.
Which Automation Anywhere packages are resolution-sensitive?
App Integration
Capture Area actions store X/Y coordinates and dimensions. A change in resolution, scaling, or application zoom can shift the target or change the captured rectangle.

- Wide viewing angle: Get consistent views across a wide 178° /178° viewing angle.
- In-Plane Switching (IPS): See excellent color accuracy and consistency across wide viewing angles with In-plane Switching (IPS) technology.
- Ultra-thin bezels: Maximize your viewing experience with thin bezels.
Image Recognition
Image and feature matching depends on pixels. Scaling, zoom, font rendering, and the RDP display driver can all change the image. Re-capture the reference image only after standardizing the Runner’s display; otherwise, you may mask an environment problem rather than solve it.
Mouse
Coordinate-based Click actions can land elsewhere when the origin, scaling, or window layout changes. Prefer element-aware actions where the application package supports them, and reserve absolute coordinates for a controlled display configuration.
OCR
OCR uses a capture rectangle. If scaling or resolution moves that rectangle, text can be missed or unrelated text can be included. Verify both the rectangle and the resulting text on the Runner.
Recorder
Automation Anywhere documents SAP Logon Recorder automation as reliable only at 100% DPI scaling. At other scaling values, physical clicks or delayed text actions may not work as expected.

Screen
Screen capture areas are also coordinate- and dimension-dependent. Match the RDP machine’s resolution and scaling before adjusting coordinates.
A practical diagnostic sequence
- Confirm deployment mode. Determine whether the failure occurs in an RDP-created session or a regular deployment.
- Read the actual Runner values. Check the resolution and scaling inside the session instead of relying on the Control Room selection alone.
- Compare scaling and zoom. Check Windows DPI and the target application’s zoom percentage.
- Classify the failing action. Identify whether it uses coordinates, image pixels, OCR rectangles, or physical Recorder events.
- Recreate the session. Disconnect the current RDP session and create a new one after changing Control Room settings.
- Retest a minimal step. Test the smallest failing capture, click, or recognition action before running the full bot.
- Check the display driver. If matching still varies at identical settings, compare screenshots from the Creator and Runner; driver-rendered pixels may differ.
Common symptoms, causes, and fixes
| Symptom | Likely cause | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| The bot works locally but fails unattended | The unattended run uses another resolution, scaling, zoom, or session type | Compare the actual Runner session and standardize the complete display configuration |
| Changing Control Room resolution had no effect | The bot uses a regular deployment, or the existing RDP session was not recreated | Confirm deployment mode and create a new RDP session |
| Image matching percentage drops | Different scaling, zoom, rendering, or RDP display driver | Match settings, capture a fresh reference, and avoid relying on a marginal match threshold |
| Clicks miss their targets | Stored coordinates no longer map to the same pixels | Standardize resolution and scaling; replace brittle coordinates with application-aware actions where possible |
| OCR returns incomplete or wrong text | The capture rectangle moved or changed size | Verify the rectangle on the Runner and correct scaling before tuning OCR |
| SAP Logon Recorder actions behave unpredictably | DPI scaling is not 100% | Use 100% DPI scaling for the SAP Logon recording and run environment |
Legacy App Store utilities: when they fit and when they do not
Automation Anywhere’s App Store includes older resolution utilities, but they should not be treated as replacements for the current Automation 360 RDP setting without checking compatibility.
| Utility | What it does | Published constraints |
|---|---|---|
| Machine Screen Resolution Change | Reads the current resolution, changes it to dimensions in a Config.xml file, and reads the result | Lists Automation Anywhere Client 11.0 or higher, Command Prompt, and PowerShell; platform is labeled 11.x; last update listed as December 1, 2020 |
| Change Display Resolutions | Enumerates monitors, changes resolutions, and restores them | Platform labeled 11.x; last update listed as September 1, 2022; requires a physically logged-in user and states that RDP login is not supported |
The second utility’s physical-login requirement makes it unsuitable as a substitute for configuring an RDP Bot Runner. Both listings are legacy-oriented, so verify that their client version, login model, and support status match your environment before deployment.
Performance, reliability, and operational practices
- Use one documented display profile for recording, testing, and production.
- Keep scaling at 100% when SAP Logon Recorder or other physical actions require it.
- Prefer selectors, application controls, and semantic actions over absolute coordinates when available.
- Keep screenshots and reference images from the same Runner image and display driver.
- After changing resolution, test image recognition, OCR, capture areas, and mouse actions separately.
- Record the deployment mode and session-creation procedure in the bot’s runbook so operators do not assume a Control Room value changes regular sessions.
Or skip the browser setup
If your workflow needs a clean screenshot of a web page rather than a Bot Runner display, ScreenshotNeo returns a PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF from one request. It accepts consent banners before capture and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets. Bot checks, CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed as clean shots, and the response identifies the result with X-Page-Verdict and X-Billed headers. Its MCP server provides take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf tools for Claude, Cursor, and other MCP clients.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does changing Windows resolution change an Automation Anywhere Control Room setting?
No. Windows changes the active display in that session; the Control Room value controls resolution requested for an RDP-based device session.
Why does the same resolution still produce different image matches?
Scaling, application zoom, font rendering, and the RDP display driver can alter pixels even when width and height match.
Can the legacy multi-display utility be used with an RDP Bot Runner?
Its App Store listing says RDP login is not supported and requires a physically logged-in user, so it is not an RDP substitute.
The Bottom Line
Set Resolution settings for a device session in Administration > Settings > Devices for new Automation 360 RDP sessions, then match resolution, scaling, and zoom between the Bot Creator and Runner. Recreate sessions after changes and diagnose the specific coordinate, pixel, OCR, or Recorder dependency rather than treating resolution as the only variable.
