Short answer: treat a consumer AI chatbot as a hosted service, not a confidential diary. Before describing a relationship, mental-health concern, workplace problem, or family conflict, use the service’s least-persistent mode, disable model-improvement activity where available, review memory separately, disconnect unnecessary apps, and remove identifying details. Temporary or incognito chats reduce persistence, but they can still be processed for safety, retained briefly, or handled under provider-specific exceptions.
Decide what privacy boundary you actually need
“Private” can mean several different things, and one setting rarely covers all of them. A chatbot may store a conversation in your history, extract a fact into a memory or personalization profile, use content for model improvement, expose data through connected apps, or retain a copy for abuse prevention and human review. Those are separate paths.
Before you type, decide which outcome matters most:

- No long-term history: choose temporary or incognito chat.
- No model-improvement use: turn off the provider’s training or activity control.
- No personalization: disable or remove saved memories and profile information.
- Minimal data exposure: do not connect mail, files, photos, contacts, browser context, device data, or location unless the task requires them.
- Strict confidentiality: do not use a consumer chatbot for secrets, regulated records, credentials, or documents covered by a duty of confidentiality.
These goals overlap, but they are not interchangeable. Turning off model improvement does not erase a saved conversation. Deleting a chat does not necessarily delete a separately saved memory. Temporary mode does not promise that no copy is processed.

The safest pre-sharing setup
- Open a temporary or incognito conversation. Use ChatGPT Temporary Chat, Claude Incognito, or a temporary-chat option in Gemini when the feature is available for your account.
- Turn off model-improvement or activity use. In ChatGPT, open Settings → Data controls and turn off Improve the model for everyone. In Gemini, review Gemini Apps activity and turn off Keep activity when that fits your needs. In Claude, review the privacy and model-improvement settings before starting the conversation.
- Check memory independently. Review the service’s memory, personalization, or profile controls. Delete facts, preferences, or personal details that were saved from earlier chats.
- Disconnect data sources you do not need. Check connected apps and permissions before mentioning information that could be supplemented by email, files, photos, contacts, browser activity, device data, or location.
- Rewrite the story in a de-identified form. Use roles such as “my manager” or “a relative,” broaden dates and locations, and remove account numbers, exact medical details, passwords, legal documents, and identifying information about other people.
- Ask for general help rather than uploading evidence. Request reflection questions, communication options, or a decision framework instead of attaching messages, medical records, legal papers, photographs, or workplace files.
This setup reduces the amount of information retained or reused, but it does not create attorney-client, doctor-patient, therapist-patient, or other professional confidentiality.
What each privacy control does—and does not do

ChatGPT: settings, temporary chats, and deletion
Turn off model improvement
Open Settings → Data controls and switch off Improve the model for everyone. OpenAI’s current Data controls guidance says that new conversations are then not used to train OpenAI models, while saved chats remain in your history. This is an opt-out from model improvement, not a history-deletion command.
Use Temporary Chat for a one-off sensitive question
Temporary Chats do not appear in history, do not create or update memories, and are not used to improve models while they are temporary. OpenAI may retain them for up to 30 days for safety purposes. That retention window means Temporary Chat is a lower-persistence option, not a promise that the text disappears immediately or is never accessed.

Memory controls personalization. If a prior conversation caused a fact or preference to be saved, turn to the memory or personalization controls and remove it there; deleting the conversation alone may not remove the saved item. Check memory after a sensitive exchange, especially if you mentioned your health, relationship, home, employer, or family.
Do not use feedback on a sensitive chat
OpenAI says a thumbs-up or thumbs-down submission can make the entire associated conversation eligible for model improvement even after you opted out. Avoid rating a conversation that contains personal feelings or identifying details. If feedback is essential, first start a separate, de-identified conversation.
Delete deliberately
- Delete the sensitive chat from your chat history.
- Open memory or personalization controls and delete any related saved facts.
- Review shared links, exports, files, and connected services for copies you created outside the chat.
- Check whether you used a personal consumer account or a Business, Enterprise, Edu, Healthcare, or API account; those account types have different default training treatment and administrator controls.
OpenAI’s Help Center gives this warning: “Please do not enter sensitive information that you would not want reviewed or used.” Treat it as a practical limit on what belongs in a consumer conversation.

Gemini: activity, temporary chats, memory, and connected data
Understand Keep activity
Gemini’s Privacy Notice, last updated 13 October 2026, says that Keep activity controls whether future chats appear in Gemini activity and are used to train Google’s AI. With Keep activity turned off, future chats are still saved for 72 hours for providing responses, processing feedback, and safety purposes. Turning the control off therefore reduces activity and training use; it does not mean zero retention.

Google’s default Gemini activity auto-delete period is 18 months. The available choices are 3 months, 18 months, 36 months, or indefinite. Choose the shortest period that supports your use, then delete an individual sensitive chat after the exchange rather than relying only on the automatic schedule.
Use temporary chat when you do not want personalization
Gemini memory can retain facts, interests, and preferences across conversations. Google says memory may use sensitive information supplied in chats for personalization. Temporary chat is the appropriate mode for information you do not want Gemini to remember or use for personalization, but safety processing and short retention can still apply.
Audit Connected Apps before you share
Gemini can process prompts and uploads as well as data from connected apps, device information, and location. Depending on your permissions, the wider data surface can include email, files, photos, browser context, contacts, device data, and location. Before discussing a personal problem:
- Open the connected-app or permissions controls.
- Disable services that are not needed for the question.
- Check whether browser or device context is enabled.
- Do not upload a document when a short, de-identified summary will answer the question.
Google’s Gemini Apps Privacy Notice says: “Please don’t enter confidential information that you wouldn’t want a reviewer to see or Google to use to improve our services, including machine-learning technologies.”
Know what deletion cannot undo
Some Gemini chats are reviewed by human reviewers. Google says reviewed chats can be retained for up to three years and are not deleted when you delete Gemini activity. Deleting activity still makes sense for removing the ordinary account copy, but it cannot retract material already separated for review, safety, or quality processes.

Claude: Incognito, privacy settings, and sensitive categories
Use Incognito for a one-off conversation
Anthropic’s consumer guidance, dated 22 May 2026, says Incognito chats are not used to improve Claude. Review the privacy and model-improvement settings in your account before sharing anything personal. Incognito does not eliminate safety handling: conversations classified for safety may still be used for internal trust-and-safety work.
Keep high-risk details out
Anthropic specifically identifies financial information such as Social Security numbers, credit-card numbers, and bank details; health or medical records; passwords; and confidential business or personal documents as information to treat carefully. Replace those details with categories and approximate facts. For example, say “a medical diagnosis” rather than naming a record number, or “a debt problem” rather than pasting a bank statement.
Anthropic’s guidance states: “While we have these protections in place, we also recommend being thoughtful about sharing highly sensitive personal details such as:” The sentence is a useful reminder that a privacy feature is not permission to disclose every detail.

Do not transfer consumer assumptions to API or managed accounts
Anthropic separates API, commercial, consumer, Amazon Bedrock, and Google Cloud arrangements in its documentation. A Claude consumer setting does not automatically describe an API integration or a managed enterprise deployment. If your chatbot is supplied by an employer, school, developer, or cloud platform, read that service’s terms and administrator controls instead of assuming Incognito or consumer defaults apply.
How to describe feelings without identifying yourself
You can often get useful emotional support or reflection without giving the chatbot a complete personal history. Use a “minimum necessary” rewrite:
- Replace names with roles. Write “my partner,” “a colleague,” or “a parent,” not a full name, username, or employer.
- Broaden dates. Use “last month” or “over several weeks” instead of an exact appointment, birth date, or incident timestamp.
- Generalize locations. Name a region or type of setting rather than an address, small workplace, school, or clinic.
- Remove unique combinations. A job title, rare diagnosis, small town, and unusual event together can identify someone even without a name.
- Summarize documents. Ask for help interpreting a situation without pasting messages, legal filings, medical records, or screenshots.
- Ask for a bounded task. “Give me three ways to start a calm conversation” exposes less than “analyze this entire message history.”
A safer prompt might be: “I feel anxious after repeated conflict with someone close to me. Without diagnosing anyone, help me identify what I can control, suggest two neutral ways to set a boundary, and list signs that I should seek qualified support.” It communicates the emotional need while omitting names, dates, addresses, and records.

What to delete after sharing something private
Deletion works best as a checklist because the same information can exist in several places.
- Delete the conversation from the chatbot’s history or activity page.
- Delete saved memory or personalization entries that mention the same person, condition, preference, or event.
- Remove uploaded files and check whether the provider keeps them in a separate file area.
- Revoke connected-app permissions that are no longer necessary.
- Remove shared links or exports and delete local copies, screenshots, browser downloads, or copied notes.
- Check feedback submissions. A rating can change eligibility for model-improvement review on some services.
- Record the account context. If the chat was made through an employer, school, API, or managed workspace, ask the administrator how retention and export work.
Do not promise yourself that deletion is absolute. Safety-retained data, human-review copies, legal holds, backups, or information already exported by another person may follow a different schedule.
Consumer, work, school, and API accounts are different
The same chatbot name can describe materially different privacy arrangements. Before sharing, identify who controls the account and who pays for it:
- Consumer account: you control personal settings, but the provider’s consumer retention, review, memory, and training rules apply.
- Business or enterprise workspace: an administrator may set retention, integrations, access, audit, and export policies.
- Education account: a school or district may control the workspace and its records.
- API account: the application developer chooses what to send, store, log, or display; the chatbot’s consumer interface settings may not apply.
- Cloud-hosted deployment: a platform arrangement can have separate data-processing and retention terms.
If you cannot identify the account type, assume the strictest practical boundary: do not enter information that would cause harm if reviewed by an authorized administrator or provider safety team.
Common mistakes and how to correct them
“I turned off training, so the chat is private.”
Training opt-out and history are separate. Delete the chat and review memory as separate actions.

Temporary or incognito modes can still involve short safety retention, abuse monitoring, or human review. Use them to reduce persistence, not to create guaranteed secrecy.

“I removed the name, so the story is anonymous.”
Rare details can identify a person. Generalize dates, locations, job titles, diagnoses, and combinations of events.
“The chatbot only saw my prompt.”
Connected apps, files, browser context, contacts, device data, and location can widen what the service processes. Audit permissions before starting.
“Deleting activity removes every copy.”
Reviewed or safety-retained material can follow a different retention period. Google says reviewed Gemini chats can remain up to three years; OpenAI says Temporary Chats may remain up to 30 days for safety.

Business, enterprise, education, API, and cloud arrangements can have different defaults. Read the policy for the exact account and application sending the data.
A quick decision rule
Use this rule before pressing Send:
- If disclosure would create legal, medical, financial, employment, relationship, or physical-safety risk, do not enter the identifying details.
- If you only need reflection or communication ideas, use a de-identified summary in temporary or incognito mode.
- If you need the chatbot to analyze a source document, remove names and unique identifiers first and verify the account’s retention and review rules.
- If you need professional confidentiality, contact a qualified human professional through a service that explicitly provides it.
The practical boundary is simple: share the minimum needed for the answer, choose the least-persistent mode, disable model-improvement use where available, remove saved memories afterward, and assume that safety processing can outlast ordinary deletion.
