If you need a place to start, try 25 minutes of focused work followed by a 5-minute break. Keep it if it helps you work and restart; adjust it if the timer interrupts concentration or the block feels too long.
Start with a simple schedule, then adapt it
The familiar 25-minute work / 5-minute break pattern is a convenient starting experiment, not a proven optimum. A schedule should give you enough time to make progress without making it difficult to pause and resume.
If you have no established preference, try 25/5 for a few sessions on similar tasks. Change one interval at a time so you can tell what feels different. Treat the options below as practical trials, not proven productivity upgrades.
| Schedule | When to try it | What is established |
|---|---|---|
| 25 minutes work / 5 minutes break | A familiar baseline when you are unsure where to begin. | A common convention; the sources here do not establish it as universally best. |
| 24 minutes work / 6 minutes break | When a little more break time or a slightly shorter work block seems useful. | Included in a 2023 study of university students’ self-study; not shown to be best for other tasks or people. Study details. |
| 12 minutes work / 3 minutes break | When longer blocks feel difficult to sustain or frequent pauses suit the task. | Also included in the 2023 student study; it is an option tested, not an established superior schedule. Study details. |
| Longer block or self-regulated breaks | When a fixed alarm repeatedly lands in the middle of useful work, or a task has a natural stopping point. | A workflow choice to test; the evidence does not establish it as a productivity upgrade. |
Choose based on the task and the interruption cost
Consider how long it takes to get into the work, whether the task has natural stopping points, how often a timer would interrupt you, and how easily you regain focus after a break. A shorter cycle may feel easier to sustain but create more interruptions. A longer cycle may better fit work that takes time to set up or enter, but can make it easier to put off resting. These are useful hypotheses to test against your own work, not settled rules.

Try shorter cycles when
- You find it hard to stay focused through a longer block.
- The task can be paused without losing substantial context.
- Frequent reminders help you notice when you need a pause.
Try longer blocks or flexible pauses when
- A fixed alarm cuts across a useful stretch of concentration.
- You need time to set up, solve a problem, or reach a natural stopping point.
- You can notice your own fatigue and pause without repeatedly postponing a break.
Use evidence as a guide, not a universal prescription
Studies of break schedules use different participants, tasks, timings, and outcomes. They do not identify one ideal work-to-break ratio for everyone.
Student self-study comparisons
In a 2023 study, Biwer and colleagues compared self-regulated breaks with two structured schedules among 87 bachelor’s and master’s students at a Dutch university. The structured groups used 24 minutes of study followed by 6 minutes of break (25 students) or 12 minutes of study followed by 3 minutes of break (27 students); 35 students chose when to take breaks. The structured-break groups reported less fatigue and distraction, and more concentration and motivation to resume, than the self-regulated group. The groups did not differ in mental effort or task completion. These findings describe one student self-study context, not every learner or workplace. Read the study.

A separate study published in 2026 assigned 176 university students to systematic short breaks or self-regulated breaks during a climate-change reading task. It found no significant difference in measured performance. Self-regulated breaks were associated with more positive mood measures, including energy, concentration, and motivation, and lower distraction. The authors note that effects may depend on timing and break duration. This result does not settle which approach works best for other tasks. Read the study.
What broader break research can—and cannot—say
A 2022 systematic review and meta-analysis in PLOS ONE defined micro-breaks as task interruptions of 10 minutes or less. It found that studies used varied durations and contexts and that no standard or optimal micro-break duration had been established. The review discusses possible well-being and performance benefits; it does not prescribe a universal Pomodoro ratio. Read the review.

A 1997 field study of computer operators at two work sites examined three 30-second breaks and one 3-minute break per hour, added to conventional breaks. At the larger site, the added breaks did not improve productivity or well-being. At the smaller site, productivity and eye, leg, and foot comfort improved when short breaks included stretching. The results were mixed by site and relate to a specific occupation; they do not guarantee benefits from a particular break routine today. Read the study.
Run a small personal trial
- Pick comparable sessions. Use the same schedule for a few sessions with a similar kind of task, rather than comparing unrelated work.
- Choose one change. If 25/5 is not fitting, adjust either the work block or break length first. You could try one of the schedules represented in the student study, or choose a longer block if alarms are interrupting useful work.
- Track four signals. Note focused work completed, fatigue and distraction, how easily you resume after a break, and whether the alarm interrupted useful momentum.
- Keep the better fit for that task. If a schedule helps you pause but repeatedly disrupts concentration, test another. You can use different schedules for different kinds of work.
On a break, try changing your work state: stand, stretch, look away from the screen, or get water. These are practical options, not guaranteed interventions; the 1997 field study found mixed results across its two sites.

A timer is optional—and Pomodoro is more than a timer
The official Pomodoro Technique site describes a broader method that includes daily planning, managing interruptions, and estimating effort. It offers free browser, Windows, and PWA timers, free planning sheets, and Francesco Cirillo’s original guide. A physical mechanical timer is listed for corporate and B2B bulk orders, so individual readers should not assume that branded timer is available to buy directly. You do not need to purchase anything to try the method. As the official site puts it, “The timer is only the starting point.”
When to change or drop the schedule
Change the timing if the alarm often breaks concentration at a poor moment, you regularly delay breaks, or you struggle to restart afterward. You can lengthen the interval, take a break at a natural boundary, or let breaks be self-regulated. If a timer adds friction rather than helping you manage work and rest, it is reasonable to stop using one.
