On a PS5, set a child’s spending cap at Settings > Family and Parental Controls > Family Management. Select the child, open Parental Controls, choose Monthly Spending Limit, enter the amount, and save. For an adult account, turn on Require Password at Checkout under Settings > Users and Accounts > Account > Payment and Subscriptions > Purchase Settings.
Which PlayStation purchase control do you need?
PS5 has two different controls that are often confused. A child-account spending limit sets a maximum amount for PlayStation Store purchases during a month. A checkout-password requirement asks for the adult account’s sign-in password whenever that account makes a purchase. They protect different account types and solve different problems.

These controls are not interchangeable. A checkout password is not a child spending allowance, and a child’s monthly limit does not add a password prompt to an adult account. Use the child-account control for a defined allowance and the password control to prevent an adult account from completing a purchase without confirmation.
Set a child’s monthly spending limit on PS5
You must sign in as the family manager or as an authorized parent/guardian whose permissions include changing the child’s controls. The child must have a separate child account in the family. A newly created child account has a monthly spending limit of 0, so no Store spending is permitted until an eligible adult changes it.

PS5 menu path
- Sign in to the PS5 with the family manager account, or with an authorized parent/guardian account.
- From the home screen, open Settings.
- Select Family and Parental Controls.
- Select Family Management. If prompted, verify the account credentials requested by the console.
- Choose the child’s account from the family list.
- Select Parental Controls.
- Choose Monthly Spending Limit.
- Enter the amount you permit the child to spend each month, then save the setting.
The amount is an account-level limit for that child’s PlayStation Store purchases. It is not a balance that you transfer to the child. The child’s purchases draw on the family manager’s wallet, while the assigned limit restricts how much that child account may spend.
What the limit means in practice
- The limit belongs to the child account, not to the PS5 console. Signing in on another console does not turn it into a different allowance.
- The limit concerns PlayStation Store purchases made by the child account. It does not turn an adult account into a supervised account.
- The family manager controls the amount. An authorized parent or guardian can adjust it only within the permissions assigned to that role.
- The child cannot add a payment method or add wallet funds for the family. Those wallet functions remain under family-management control.
If you want the child to be unable to spend until you deliberately approve an allowance, leave the amount at 0. If you want to permit purchases, enter the monthly amount you are comfortable having charged to the family manager’s wallet and save it before the child attempts checkout.
Require a password for purchases on an adult account
For an adult account, the relevant control is Require Password at Checkout. It adds an account-password confirmation to Store purchases. This is useful when several people can use the console or when you want a deliberate confirmation step before an adult account spends money.

- Open Settings on the PS5.
- Select Users and Accounts.
- Select Account.
- Select Payment and Subscriptions.
- Select Purchase Settings.
- Turn on Require Password at Checkout.
After it is enabled, the account sign-in password is requested when that adult account makes a PlayStation Store purchase. The setting follows the PlayStation Store account across devices, rather than applying only to the PS5 on which you changed it.
Important limits of the checkout password
- It applies to adult accounts, not child accounts. It therefore cannot replace a child’s Monthly Spending Limit.
- It protects the purchase checkout step, but it does not protect wallet top-ups. Someone who can access the account and the wallet-funding controls may still be able to add funds without encountering the checkout prompt.
- It is an account setting. If a child is using the adult account itself, the child is using the adult account’s access and controls; child-account parental controls do not apply.
For a household with children, use separate child accounts and set their controls. Use the checkout-password option as an additional safeguard on the adult account, not as the primary child-control method.

Use separate accounts to stop a child buying through an adult profile
The account structure determines whether parental controls can work. Sony recommends creating a separate child account for each child rather than allowing a child to use an adult account. A child signed in to an adult account receives that account’s access, and the child-account controls do not govern those purchases.
Recommended household setup
- Keep one account as the family manager and use it to administer the family group.
- Create a separate child account for each child who uses the console.
- Set each child account’s Monthly Spending Limit from Family Management. New child accounts begin at 0, so decide explicitly whether to allow spending.
- Keep the adult account protected with Require Password at Checkout.
- Sign out of the adult account after use, and use the console’s available password or passcode tools to reduce unauthorized access.
This arrangement keeps the allowance attached to the correct person and prevents an adult profile from being used as an accidental bypass. It also lets you apply different limits to different children instead of sharing one unrestricted account.
Manage the child limit online or from a phone
You do not have to use the PS5 for every change. Sony also provides an online route through Account Management and a mobile route through the PlayStation Family app.
Account Management on the web
- Sign in to Account Management with the family manager account or an authorized parent/guardian account.
- Open Family Management.
- Select the child account.
- Choose Edit.
- Adjust Monthly Spending Limit and save the change.
The web setting controls the same child-account allowance as the PS5 menu. It is useful when the console is being used by someone else or when you need to change the limit from a computer.
PlayStation Family app
The PlayStation Family app can manage a child’s spending limit and parental controls from a mobile device. Sign in with the family-management account, select the child, open the spending or parental-control settings, change the monthly amount, and save. The exact screen arrangement can vary with the app version, so look for the child’s Monthly Spending Limit control rather than a wallet-balance setting.

How the controls differ when money is added to the wallet
The child limit governs the child account’s Store purchases; those purchases are charged to the family manager’s wallet and remain within the assigned monthly amount. Wallet funding is a separate action. The checkout-password setting does not cover wallet top-ups, and a child account cannot add payment methods or wallet funds for the family.
That distinction matters if you are trying to prevent every kind of unauthorized charge. A limit can restrict what the child account spends, while a checkout password can require confirmation for an adult purchase. Neither setting should be treated as a general lock on all wallet activity. Keep wallet-management access with the family manager and avoid leaving an adult account signed in for a child to use.
Troubleshoot a missing setting or an unexpected purchase result
“Monthly Spending Limit” is not shown
Check that you are in Family and Parental Controls > Family Management and that you selected a child account before opening Parental Controls. The option is a child-account setting; it is not shown as the spending control for an adult account. Also verify that the signed-in account is the family manager or an authorized parent/guardian with permission to change the setting.
The limit is present but a purchase is still blocked
Review the amount saved for that child. A newly created child account starts at 0, and a zero allowance prevents permitted Store spending until the family manager changes it. If the intended amount was entered but not saved, repeat the PS5, web or app procedure and confirm the value after saving.
A child can still buy games despite the limit
Confirm which account is signed in at checkout. If the child is using an adult account, the child-account Monthly Spending Limit does not apply. Sign out of the adult profile and have the child use the separate child account created for the family group. Then verify that the child’s limit is set on that account.

The checkout password does not appear
Make sure Require Password at Checkout is enabled under the adult account’s Purchase Settings. The prompt is tied to the adult PlayStation Store account and applies across devices using that account. It is not a child-account feature, and it does not appear as a protection step for wallet funding.
An authorized parent cannot change the amount
The family manager decides how much a child may spend. A parent or guardian can change settings only within the permissions assigned to that role. If the control is unavailable, have the family manager make the change or review that adult’s family permissions.
The family manager’s wallet is being charged
That is the expected payment arrangement for child purchases: the child account uses funds from the family manager’s wallet, subject to the child’s monthly limit. If the charge is not associated with the child account, check which profile made the purchase and whether an adult account was used.

- Verify after saving: return to the relevant setting and confirm that the intended amount or password requirement remains enabled.
What to do if an unauthorized purchase has already happened
First identify the account that completed the transaction. If it was a child account, review its Monthly Spending Limit and make sure the child is not also using an adult profile. If it was an adult account, enable Require Password at Checkout and sign out after use. Sony’s Store guidance recommends password and passcode tools, separate child accounts and parental controls to limit or prevent further purchases. Its cancellation guidance likewise points to those account safeguards.
