On Windows, OBS can start streaming when it launches if you add --startstreaming to its launch command. That handles only one part of recovery: the PC must restart, OBS must open, the network and any cameras or other sources must be ready, and the streaming platform must accept the feed. Test that full chain before relying on it unattended. The steps below use Windows and YouTube as the documented example; menus and recovery behavior can differ on other operating systems and platforms.
What OBS can—and cannot—resume automatically
OBS supports a --startstreaming launch parameter that tells it to begin streaming when the application opens. You can add it to a Windows shortcut or use it when launching OBS from a scheduled task. OBS documents the parameter and launch options.
This is not a complete power-outage recovery system. If power fails, the computer may remain off after electricity returns unless its power settings are configured to start it again. Even if it boots, OBS must launch, the network must be available, sources must recover, and the platform must make the event live. OBS’s Automatic Reconnect feature addresses interrupted connections while OBS is running; it does not itself restart the computer or reopen OBS after a shutdown. See the OBS Studio Overview Guide.
Prepare OBS and YouTube before automating startup
Save and test the intended stream setup
Before adding automatic launch, open OBS and verify the profile, scene collection, active scene, stream destination, audio, video, and sources you intend to use. OBS’s Quick Start guidance recommends testing settings before streaming. Do a supervised test so you know the correct scene and feed appear at the platform.

Check YouTube’s event controls
OBS needs the YouTube server URL and stream key for an encoder stream. For a scheduled stream, YouTube instructs creators to wait for the preview in Live Control Room and then select Go live. YouTube also offers event-level Auto-start and Auto-stop controls; when enabled, an encoder can start or stop the event. A saved stream key and OBS’s launch parameter alone therefore do not guarantee that every scheduled event becomes public. Check the specific event settings and test the restart behavior. Set OBS to start streaming when it opens on Windows
Option 1: Add the parameter to an OBS shortcut
- Locate the OBS executable, commonly
obs64.exeon a 64-bit Windows installation. Create a shortcut to it if you do not already have one. - Right-click the shortcut and choose Properties.
- In the Shortcut tab, edit Target. Keep the executable path, including its quotation marks, and add a space followed by
--startstreamingafter the closing quotation mark. The result should have this shape:"C:pathtoobs64.exe" --startstreaming. Use the actual path on your PC. - Select Apply, then OK. Open OBS using this shortcut and confirm that it starts streaming to the intended destination.

Option 2: Launch OBS from a scheduled task
You can configure Windows Task Scheduler to launch OBS with --startstreaming, for example when you sign in. The exact task options depend on your Windows setup and on when you need OBS to start. In the task’s action, use the OBS executable and pass the launch parameter as an argument. OBS specifically says to set the task’s Start in field to the folder containing obs64.exe; follow its launch-parameter instructions. Test the task while supervised rather than assuming a successful task run means the stream is live.
Make the computer and network part of the recovery plan
Confirm the PC actually restarts after power returns
The OBS launch parameter cannot turn on a computer that stays off. Check your computer’s power-recovery behavior and Windows startup configuration separately. Firmware options for restoring power after an AC loss vary by computer, and the steps are manufacturer-specific; consult the PC maker’s documentation rather than assuming OBS controls this setting.

Account for router startup time
OBS may launch before the router or other network equipment has recovered. In one OBS forum discussion, a Windows 11 user reported reconnect trouble when OBS attempted to connect before the network equipment was ready. That is an individual report, not proof that every setup behaves this way. If your test shows a timing problem, use a delayed or network-aware launch method appropriate to your computer, then retest; the precise configuration is system-dependent.
Test cameras and other sources separately
A stream connection recovering does not prove that a camera, capture device, or network input has recovered. Check the OBS preview and source status after restart. If a source remains unavailable, troubleshoot that device or source independently; --startstreaming does not guarantee that sources reconnect.

Run a supervised end-to-end recovery test
- Confirm the intended OBS scene, profile, stream destination, and source settings are saved.
- Arrange a supervised restart or brief outage test. Do not leave a children’s broadcast unattended just to test automation.
- Allow the PC to boot and the router and internet connection to recover. Verify OBS opens through the shortcut or scheduled task configured for
--startstreaming. - Check the OBS preview and confirm cameras, audio, and any other sources are functioning.
- In YouTube Live Control Room, verify the encoder preview, stream health, and audio/video quality. Confirm the event is actually live rather than assuming an open OBS window or active encoder feed is enough.
- If the event is scheduled, verify whether its Auto-start setting is enabled or whether a manual Go live action is required. Confirm the public event behaves as intended.
YouTube’s live-stream guidance recommends checking preview and stream health. Repeat the test after material changes to Windows startup, OBS, sources, network equipment, or event settings.

Automation does not change YouTube’s audience or child-safety policies. When a stream is marked as made for kids, some features, including live chat, are restricted or unavailable. YouTube also says streams featuring minors under 16 who are not visibly accompanied by an adult may be removed or have live chat disabled. Review YouTube’s guidance on avoiding live-stream restrictions; do not treat an OBS or event setting as a workaround for platform rules.

Troubleshoot a stream that does not resume
