Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsTo make OBS start a YouTube lofi stream when your computer starts, first configure and test the scene and YouTube stream in OBS, then launch OBS with the --startstreaming parameter at login. On Windows, add it to an OBS shortcut; on macOS, create an Automator launcher. Starting OBS and starting the YouTube broadcast are separate behaviors, so configure YouTube’s encoder auto-start as needed and test the full sequence before leaving it unattended.
Before automating OBS
Automatic startup is only useful if OBS opens the intended lofi scene and can connect to the intended YouTube broadcast. Prepare and test those first.
- Configure OBS for this computer. In OBS, open Tools → Auto-Configuration Wizard and follow its prompts. OBS says performance depends on the encoder, resolution, frame rate, and scene complexity, so use settings the computer can sustain. See the OBS system requirements.
- Build the lofi scene. Add the video or image sources and audio you want to loop. Play the scene and check that the audio mixer meters move and that the intended picture and sound are present.
- Connect YouTube. In OBS, select the YouTube service or server and enter the stream key for the intended channel and broadcast. Treat the key as a password: do not publish it or include it in a screenshot.
- Run a short test. Confirm the stream appears on the intended YouTube broadcast and that both video and audio work. YouTube recommends testing with representative audio and video and monitoring stream health; OBS also recommends testing before relying on a setup. See YouTube’s streaming tips and OBS’s streaming guide.
Choose encoder settings your connection can sustain
There is no single bitrate that works for every internet connection. YouTube’s published H.264 examples are 5 Mbps for 1080p at 30 fps and 3 Mbps for 720p at 30 fps. These are recommendations, not guarantees; choose the resolution and frame rate that remain stable on your actual upload connection. YouTube recommends keeping 20% upload bandwidth headroom above the stream’s total bitrate. Its Help page does not display a publication year for these figures. Check the current YouTube encoder settings before choosing a profile.
- Bitrate: Set a bitrate supported by your upload bandwidth, leaving room for fluctuations and other devices using the connection.
- Keyframes: YouTube recommends a two-second keyframe interval.
- Rate control: YouTube recommends CBR (constant bitrate).
- Ingest protocol: YouTube recommends RTMPS for secure ingestion.
- Frame rate and resolution: Start conservatively if the computer struggles. OBS notes that 60-fps streaming can demand more resources than 30-fps; scene complexity and encoder choice also affect load.
Watch YouTube’s stream health while testing. If it reports unstable delivery, lower the bitrate or reduce resolution or frame rate, then test again rather than assuming a setting will work because it matches a published recommendation.

Set OBS to start streaming when the computer starts
OBS supports the --startstreaming launch parameter. It can also start minimized with --minimize-to-tray. Use the parameters only after confirming that the OBS profile, scene, and YouTube broadcast selection are the ones you want the computer to start automatically. OBS documents launch parameters for Windows and macOS.
Windows: add parameters to an OBS shortcut
- Create or copy an OBS shortcut. Right-click it and choose Properties.
- In the Shortcut tab, find Target. Keep the existing executable path and add a space followed by
--startstreaminginside the field. To start OBS minimized as well, add another space and--minimize-to-tray. - Apply the change and use that shortcut to test. Confirm OBS opens the right scene and begins streaming to the intended YouTube broadcast.
- To launch at sign-in, place the configured shortcut in the Windows Startup folder or use the startup mechanism appropriate to your Windows setup. A login launch starts after a user signs in; it is not the same as starting before sign-in.
If using Task Scheduler or another automated launcher, OBS says to set Start in to the directory containing obs64.exe. Without the correct working directory, an automated launch may not find the expected program files.

macOS: make an Automator launcher
- Open Automator and create an application.
- Add the Run Shell Script action.
- Enter
open -a "OBS" --args --startstreaming. To start minimized too, append a space and--minimize-to-tray. - Save the application, then arrange for it to open at login using the startup controls for your macOS version.
- Run the saved application once and verify that OBS connects to the intended stream.
OBS’s launch-parameter guide covers creating the Automator launcher; the precise login UI can vary by macOS version.
Linux: confirm your desktop environment first
The OBS launch parameter is documented, but startup configuration depends on the Linux distribution and desktop environment. Do not assume one autostart-file or service recipe applies everywhere. Identify your distribution and desktop environment before choosing a login autostart method.

Understand the separate YouTube auto-start controls
The OBS parameter starts streaming from OBS. YouTube’s encoder auto-start and auto-stop controls govern whether the YouTube broadcast begins or ends when an encoder starts or stops. These are separate controls, not substitutes for the OBS launch parameter. YouTube also supports scheduled events, which are different from leaving a persistent broadcast running. Review the intended broadcast’s stream settings and test the exact combination of OBS and YouTube controls before relying on it. See YouTube’s live-stream setup instructions.
YouTube advises connecting an encoder 15 minutes before a scheduled event. That lead time is event-preparation guidance rather than a special requirement for a continuous stream; allow time for a test before you depend on the setup.

Plan for interruptions and replay limits
Automatic reconnect can help OBS recover after a dropped connection, but it cannot prevent power loss, operating-system updates, hardware problems, or YouTube-side incidents. In OBS, review the Advanced settings for Automatic Reconnect and test the behavior. YouTube warns that a connectivity disruption can break a stream and recommends upload capacity above the total stream bitrate. See YouTube’s streaming tips and OBS’s streaming guide.
A UPS may keep locally powered equipment running through some short power interruptions, but it does not protect the internet connection or YouTube service. Treat it as an optional measure, not a guarantee of 24/7 uptime.

Do not rely on YouTube to preserve a single uninterrupted 24/7 stream as a complete replay. YouTube says streams under 12 hours can be automatically archived, while a stream exceeding 12 hours may not be captured at all. If a replay matters, plan shorter broadcasts around that limit or make a local recording as a backup. The YouTube Help page does not display a publication year for this guidance. See YouTube’s archive guidance.
Troubleshoot common startup failures
- OBS opens but does not stream: Check that
--startstreamingis in the shortcut target or Automator command, then verify the selected YouTube service, stream key, broadcast, and YouTube auto-start settings. - The wrong scene or broadcast starts: Open OBS manually, select the intended profile, scene, and broadcast, test them, then repeat the automated launch. Do not enable unattended startup until the selection is correct.
- A scheduled or automated Windows launch fails: Set Task Scheduler’s Start in field to the folder containing
obs64.exe, as OBS specifies. - The stream drops or health is poor: Check upload stability and available headroom, lower bitrate or video settings if necessary, and verify OBS Automatic Reconnect. Re-test while monitoring YouTube stream health.
- OBS starts but the audio is silent: Check the scene’s audio source and OBS mixer meters before launch; test representative audio on YouTube as well.
- The replay is missing or incomplete: A broadcast longer than 12 hours may not be captured. Use a local recording or divide the stream into shorter broadcasts if an archive is important.
Or let it run in the cloud
If you do not want a home computer to stay on, StreamNeo keeps an uploaded-video YouTube stream running from the cloud. Upload the lofi recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It plays uploaded videos, not a live camera feed.
