For a 24/7 YouTube loop, configure OBS’s live encoder for YouTube’s ingestion requirements, then choose a separate local recording preset only if you need an independent archive. In OBS, open Settings → Output, select Output Mode: Advanced, and configure the Streaming and Recording tabs separately. YouTube recommends CBR and a 2-second keyframe interval for live ingestion; local recording quality presets use different rate-control choices. Test both outputs before leaving the stream unattended.

Set the YouTube streaming encoder first

In OBS, go to Settings → Output → Output Mode → Advanced → Streaming. Choose an encoder supported by your computer and YouTube’s live setup. YouTube’s current encoder guidance supports RTMP/RTMPS delivery and H.264, H.265/HEVC, or AV1 video, at up to 60 fps. It recommends RTMPS for encrypted delivery. Use the ingest details and stream key from your YouTube live setup; keep the key private.

Use CBR and a 2-second keyframe interval

For the live output, set rate control to CBR and the keyframe interval to 2 seconds. YouTube specifies a maximum keyframe interval of 4 seconds, so do not set a longer interval. Select a bitrate according to the codec, resolution, and frame rate you actually use. The following examples are YouTube’s H.264 guidance; they are not interchangeable with the separate H.265 or AV1 ranges.

H.264 output Minimum bitrate Recommended bitrate
720p30 or 720p60 3 Mbps 8 Mbps
1080p30 5 Mbps 14 Mbps
1080p60 6 Mbps 17 Mbps

These figures come from YouTube Help’s live encoder guidance, current as checked in 2026. If you select H.265/HEVC or AV1, use YouTube’s bitrate range for that codec rather than copying the H.264 values.

Match output to your computer and connection

Choose a resolution and frame rate your computer can encode continuously, not merely for a short test. YouTube recommends testing with representative movement and audio and keeping about 20% upload-bandwidth headroom. For example, a 17 Mbps video bitrate already needs more available upload capacity than 17 Mbps once audio and network variation are considered. A wired connection can reduce local Wi-Fi variability, but it cannot fix an unstable internet provider or guarantee uptime.

In OBS, set up the YouTube service/ingest details and stream key in the streaming configuration, then use YouTube’s preview and stream-health feedback to validate the picture, sound, and connection before relying on the session. Use a private or otherwise appropriate test event if you do not want the setup check to be public.

Choose how OBS will record locally

Open Settings → Output → Recording. Decide first whether the local file is just a backup of the live feed or a higher-quality master for later editing. A local recording does not use YouTube’s live-ingestion rate-control goal: CBR is for a steady outgoing stream, while OBS’s quality-based recording modes target local image quality and file size.

Simple option: Same as stream

OBS’s Same as stream recording preset uses the stream’s encoder settings. It is a straightforward choice if a local copy matching the streamed output is enough. OBS notes that recordings set to Same as stream cannot be paused.

Independent recording quality

Choose a separate recording encoder or quality setting when the archive should be better than the live stream or should use a different codec/quality tradeoff. This may require additional CPU or GPU resources while OBS is streaming. OBS’s Advanced Recording Settings guide gives these starting-point examples for matching its Simple output presets:

Encoder OBS example recording settings
NVENC CQP 16–23; keyframe interval 2; preset P5; High Quality tuning; two-pass quarter-resolution multipass; High profile; look-ahead off; adaptive quantization on; two B-frames.
x264 CRF 16–23; keyframe interval 2; veryfast CPU preset; High profile.
AMD CQP 16–23; keyframe interval 2; Quality preset; High profile; zero maximum B-frames.
QuickSync ICQ 16–23; target usage TU4; High profile; keyframe interval 2; normal latency; three B-frames.

These are OBS guide baselines, not universally optimal presets or a guarantee that a specific computer can stream and record nonstop. The exact encoder and options available depend on hardware, operating system, and drivers. Check the settings OBS exposes on your machine and test for dropped frames, encoder overload, audio problems, and sustained file writes before using them for a long run.

Understand the file-size tradeoff

OBS describes High Quality as high quality at medium file size. Indistinguishable targets higher quality but creates larger files and may affect performance on older or weaker hardware. OBS warns that its Lossless option uses the CPU encoder and can produce around 7 GB per minute. That is an impractical default for most continuous recordings; estimate storage for the full recording duration before selecting any quality mode.

Plan for YouTube’s 12-hour archive limit

YouTube says streams under 12 hours can be automatically archived, but a stream longer than 12 hours may not be captured at all. A single 24/7 event therefore should not be treated as a guaranteed complete YouTube archive. If preserving the whole feed matters, enable local recording, confirm that the output file is growing, and plan storage capacity and file handling before leaving the stream unattended. OBS supports recording while streaming, but you remain responsible for the disk space and for verifying the resulting file.

YouTube recommends checking local archive files. For a continuous operation, design a rotation and recovery process that accounts for the 12-hour caveat; YouTube’s published guidance does not guarantee archive behavior for any particular OBS rotation design.

Test and monitor before leaving the loop running

  1. Confirm the live configuration. Check codec, resolution, frame rate, CBR bitrate, and 2-second keyframe interval against the YouTube settings for the selected codec.
  2. Check upload capacity. Test the connection and leave about 20% bandwidth headroom, as YouTube recommends. If the connection cannot sustain the bitrate, lower it rather than relying on a marginal link.
  3. Run a representative test. Include the sort of motion and audio the loop will contain, and review YouTube’s preview and stream health along with OBS’s output status.
  4. Verify the recording. Confirm that the local file is growing during the test, then play back the file and check its audio/video integrity.
  5. Check unattended failure points. OBS includes an automatic reconnect control that can help after a disconnect. It does not keep a failed computer, power supply, internet connection, media source, or storage device working. Arrange a way to notice and address those failures.

Troubleshoot common OBS loop problems

  • YouTube reports poor stream health or buffering: the upload may not sustain the chosen bitrate. Test available upload capacity, restore the recommended headroom, and reduce bitrate or output resolution/frame rate if needed.
  • OBS reports encoding overload or the picture stutters: the selected output may exceed the computer’s sustained encoder capacity, particularly when recording separately. Test a lower resolution or frame rate, use an available hardware encoder, or choose a less demanding recording quality.
  • The local recording stops or storage fills: estimate required capacity using the actual recording size over a test interval, then provide enough free space for the intended run and a file-management plan. Do not rely on a quality label alone to predict long-session storage use.
  • The YouTube archive is incomplete or missing: a stream longer than 12 hours may not be captured at all. Use and verify a local recording if a complete copy is essential, and plan event rotation rather than assuming one extended event will archive fully.
  • The stream does not recover after a disconnect: automatic reconnect can help with some disconnections, but it cannot restore power, internet service, a crashed computer, or a missing media source. Check those components and arrange monitoring or manual recovery.

Or let it run in the cloud

If the goal is simply to keep uploaded videos live on YouTube, StreamNeo is a cloud alternative: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It loops the uploaded video from the cloud, so nothing has to stay on at home. Every slot streams the upload as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one price per slot, with automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month. UPI and cards are supported in India; card checkout is available worldwide. StreamNeo is for YouTube streams of uploaded videos, not camera broadcasting. See StreamNeo or its plans, then start the free first day.
