Start with OBS at 640×360, 30 fps, H.264, and CBR, then test a low bitrate against your actual sustained upload speed. YouTube lists 0.4 Mbps as the minimum and 4 Mbps as the recommended H.264 bitrate for 360p30; that minimum is a platform floor, not a promise of acceptable picture quality. There is no single bitrate that works for every Indian connection, so keep the stream private or unlisted while you test and use the highest setting that remains stable.

Choose a bitrate based on upload stability, not a national average

India does not have one connection profile that can determine the right OBS bitrate. Your usable upload capacity depends on your location, ISP, access type, time of day, and network conditions. A speed test is a snapshot rather than a guarantee of continuous upload performance. YouTube advises testing upload capacity and checking the stream before going live.

Use YouTube’s published H.264 figures as reference points, not guarantees that a given connection will sustain a live stream. The table below reproduces YouTube Help’s settings accessed in 2026; the page does not show a publication date.

Output H.264 minimum bitrate H.264 recommended bitrate
360p at 30 fps 0.4 Mbps 4 Mbps
480p at 30 fps 0.4 Mbps 4 Mbps
720p at 30 fps 3 Mbps 8 Mbps
1080p at 30 fps 5 Mbps 14 Mbps

These are YouTube’s H.264 minimum and recommended values, not measured results for Indian ISPs. The recommended setting is not a required minimum; below it, picture quality may degrade. Audio also uses upload capacity, so do not allocate all available bandwidth to video bitrate.

TP-Link AX1800 WiFi 6 Router (Archer AX21 V5)
  • DUAL-BAND WIFI 6 ROUTER: Wi-Fi 6(802.11ax) technology achieves faster speeds, greater capacity and reduced network congestion compared to the previous gen. All WiFi routers require a separate modem. Dual-Band WiFi routers do not support the 6 GHz band.
  • AX1800: Enjoy smoother and more stable streaming, gaming, downloading with 1.8 Gbps total bandwidth (up to 1200 Mbps on 5 GHz and up to 574 Mbps on 2.4 GHz). Performance varies by conditions, distance to devices, and obstacles such as walls.
  • CONNECT MORE DEVICES: Wi-Fi 6 technology communicates more data to more devices simultaneously using revolutionary OFDMA technology
  • EXTENSIVE COVERAGE: Achieve the strong, reliable WiFi coverage with Archer AX1800 as it focuses signal strength to your devices far away using Beamforming technology, 4 high-gain antennas and an advanced front-end module (FEM) chipset
  • OUR CYBERSECURITY COMMITMENT: TP-Link is a signatory of the U.S. Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency’s (CISA) Secure-by-Design pledge. This device is designed, built, and maintained, with advanced security as a core requirement.

Set OBS to a conservative 360p30 starting point

1. Set the output resolution and frame rate

  1. In OBS, open Settings → Video.
  2. Set the output resolution to 640×360 and the frame rate to 30 fps.
  3. Click Apply and OK.

A lower frame rate is a reasonable bandwidth-saving test for a mostly static relaxation scene, but the cited platform guidance does not quantify the savings. Check your actual scene and motion rather than assuming it will look acceptable.

2. Configure streaming output

  1. Open Settings → Output → Streaming.
  2. Select an encoder that supports H.264 and set rate control to CBR, if that option is exposed by your selected encoder.
  3. Set a conservative video bitrate. YouTube’s listed 0.4 Mbps minimum for H.264 360p30 can be a starting floor for testing, but it is not YouTube’s recommended bitrate and does not ensure good-looking video.
  4. Set the keyframe interval to 2 seconds. YouTube recommends two seconds and says not to exceed four seconds.

YouTube’s encoder settings specify CBR and RTMP or RTMPS. YouTube recommends RTMPS, which encrypts data to and through its servers. Use H.264 for this configuration.

3. Connect OBS to your YouTube stream

  1. In YouTube Studio, open the live control room and the stream settings for the broadcast you are preparing.
  2. Copy the stream key from YouTube Studio into the corresponding stream-key field in OBS. Treat the key as a password; do not publish or share it.
  3. Choose RTMPS in the connection settings if available, and confirm that OBS is configured for CBR and a two-second keyframe interval.

YouTube’s current encoder requirements and guidance are listed in Choose live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions.

Test the exact relaxation stream before making it public

  1. Run upload speed tests several times, including around the time of day you expect the stream to run. Use the upload result, not the download result, as your reference.
  2. Start a private or unlisted test stream using the same audio, visual movement, transitions, and scene you plan to use. YouTube advises testing with similar audio and visual activity.
  3. Watch YouTube’s stream-health panel and messages while the test is running. A brief successful start does not establish that a 24/7 stream will remain stable.
  4. If the stream is unstable, lower the video bitrate first. If that is not enough, reduce the output resolution or investigate the connection before trying a higher-quality setting.
  5. After a stable 360p30 test, try 480p30 and then 720p30 only if repeated tests show sufficient upload headroom. Re-test each change with the real scene and audio.
  6. Before relying on a local computer for continuous streaming, run a long-duration trial and check power, heat, uptime, and reconnect behavior. The platform guidance does not prescribe a special bitrate or continuity configuration for 24/7 use.

Troubleshoot dropped frames and unstable uploads

  • OBS reports dropped frames or YouTube stream health degrades: lower the bitrate, then re-test. If the problem persists, test a different streaming server and contact your ISP, as OBS recommends.
  • The speed test looks fast but the stream still struggles: repeat tests at the planned streaming time and test the actual broadcast. A single speed test does not guarantee sustained upload capacity.
  • The picture is too soft at a stable bitrate: test a higher bitrate only after stability is established; otherwise, try another resolution and repeat a private or unlisted test. YouTube’s recommended 360p30 bitrate is 4 Mbps, while its listed minimum is 0.4 Mbps, and quality below the recommendation may be degraded.
  • Audio or scene changes cause problems: test with the same audio and visual movement planned for the live stream. A static screen alone is not a representative test if the broadcast includes animation or transitions.
  • The stream disconnects during a long trial: check whether the issue recurs and inspect local power, heat, network, and reconnect behavior. A stable short test does not demonstrate 24/7 continuity.
  • You are streaming over Wi-Fi: a wired connection may be worth testing if practical, but it cannot overcome an ISP upload limit.

OBS’s Stream Connection Troubleshooting guide discusses connection-side causes and suggests trying a different server or contacting your ISP when problems persist. For x264 encoder context, see the OBS Project’s Streaming with x264.
