To stop OBS monitoring echo without muting the audience, leave ordinary program audio on Monitor Off, choose the correct monitoring device in OBS, and make sure the same audio device is not captured both globally and as a scene source. Use monitoring only on sources you need to hear locally, and keep YouTube playback from feeding back into the OBS mix.

Understand what OBS monitoring changes

Monitoring controls whether OBS plays a source through a configured listening device; they are separate from the source’s normal stream and recording output. The OBS Project’s Audio Mixer Guide describes the Monitor button as allowing source audio to play through the monitoring device configured in Settings. Exact labels can vary slightly by OBS version or localization.

  • Monitor Off: OBS does not play the source through the monitoring device. The source can still go to the stream or recording through its normal output path.
  • Monitor Only (mute output): You hear the source locally, but it is muted from stream and recording output.
  • Monitor and Output: OBS sends the source to the monitoring device as well as the normal stream or recording output.

For a loop stream’s program audio, Monitor Off is usually the right starting point: viewers still receive the source, and you avoid needlessly routing it back through a listening device.

Find the audio path that is causing the echo

First distinguish the symptom: you may hear a source twice, hear it locally while viewers cannot, or hear it on the stream while you cannot. Check the mixer meter and trace the signal’s capture and playback paths before changing levels.

Duplicate global and scene capture

A device may be active in both OBS’s global audio settings and a scene-level Audio Input/Output Capture source. The OBS Project’s Audio Sources guide, dated 2022-01-11, warns: “Audio Input/Output Capture source can cause an echo effect if you have the same device selected in Settings -> Audio.” If you add a device directly to a scene, disable the duplicate global device, or remove the scene-level copy. Keep one capture path for that device.

Monitoring output captured again

If OBS plays a source through a device that OBS also captures as desktop audio or another input, the sound can return to the mix and be heard twice. Choose the intended monitoring device—headphones are a practical option for private listening—and avoid monitoring through a device that is included in the OBS program mix. Headphones can reduce room-speaker sound reaching a microphone, but they do not fix duplicate digital routing.

YouTube playback returning to OBS

If you play the public YouTube stream on the streaming computer and that playback is captured by OBS, it can re-enter the program mix as a delayed repeat. This is an application of OBS’s duplicate-capture guidance, not a YouTube-specific rule established by the cited guides. Unless playback is intentionally part of the production, mute or close it on the streaming computer. To check the public stream, use a separate device or ensure its audio is not captured into OBS.

Monitor Only on audio meant for viewers

If viewers cannot hear a source but you can, check whether it is set to Monitor Only. That mode intentionally mutes the source from stream and recording output. Change it to Monitor Off if only the audience needs it, or Monitor and Output if both you and viewers need to hear it.

Set up monitoring without echo

  1. Map the sources. List the loop media source, microphone, desktop audio, capture-card audio, browser or player return, and any virtual-cable or mixer devices. Mark which sources belong in the audience mix and which you need to monitor locally.
  2. Remove duplicate capture paths. In OBS, open Settings > Audio and check the global devices against the sources in your scene. If the same physical device is captured globally and through an Audio Input/Output Capture source, disable one path.
  3. Choose the monitoring device. In Settings > Audio, select the output you actually want to listen through. Prefer a device that OBS is not also capturing into the program mix.
  4. Set each source’s monitoring mode. In the mixer, open Advanced Audio Properties. Leave ordinary viewer-only program audio on Monitor Off. Use Monitor Only for audio you want to hear locally but not send to viewers. Use Monitor and Output only when the source belongs in both paths and its monitoring output cannot be captured again.
  5. Keep the loop return out of the mix. Do not feed YouTube playback audio back into the same OBS program unless you deliberately want it included. If you need to listen to the stream, make sure that playback is not captured as another program source.
  6. Verify both paths before leaving the stream unattended. Confirm the relevant mixer meters move, make a brief recording or private test, and check that the intended sound reaches the audience mix once. OBS’s mixer guide notes that meters show peak level and red indicates a level close to clipping; check levels as well as routing.

Troubleshoot by symptom

What you notice Likely cause What to check
You hear a microphone or device twice The device may be captured both globally and in the scene, or its monitored output may be captured again. In Settings > Audio and the scene sources, leave only one capture path. Check which device is selected for monitoring.
You hear the sound, but viewers do not The source may be set to Monitor Only, which mutes it from stream and recording output. In Advanced Audio Properties, use Monitor Off for viewer-only audio or Monitor and Output when both paths are needed.
Viewers hear the sound, but you do not The source may correctly be on Monitor Off, or the monitoring device may not be the output you are listening through. Check the selected monitoring device in Settings > Audio. Enable a monitor mode only if you need to hear that source locally.
The audio repeats after a delay YouTube playback may be returning to OBS, or a captured device may be duplicated. Mute or close playback on the streaming computer and inspect global and scene-level capture paths.
A microphone picks up room audio Speakers may be audible to the microphone. Try headphones to reduce this acoustic path, then separately check OBS routing for duplicate digital capture.
The mixer meter does not move The expected source may not be reaching OBS through its configured capture path. Confirm the intended source is present and active in the scene and that the correct device is selected. A monitoring-mode change alone does not establish that a signal is entering OBS.
