In Nero Burning ROM, choose the recorder, open the compilation’s Burn Compilation window, and select the desired available value in Writing > Write speed. Nero can only offer speeds supported by the selected recorder, its firmware, and the inserted CD-R; the documented settings do not provide a way to force an unsupported 4x, 2x, or 1x mode.
Set the burn speed in Nero
- create or open your CD compilation and proceed to the burn screen.
- Select the physical recorder you want to use.
- In the Writing area, open the Write speed drop-down.
- Choose 4x, 2x, or 1x if that value is listed.
- Review Determine maximum speed before starting the burn.
- Start the burn and keep the application log if the result is unexpected or the process fails.
Nero’s Nero Burning ROM Manual describes Write speed as the control that selects the speed at which the disc is burned.
Why Nero may not show 1x, 2x, or 4x
The drop-down reflects options exposed by the selected recorder and media combination. If a requested value is missing, the available documentation does not establish a software override that can make the drive operate at that unsupported speed. Check the exact recorder specification and firmware rather than relying on a speed shown by another application.
| What you see | What it means | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| 4x, 2x, or 1x is listed | Nero is allowing that target for the selected recorder and disc. | Select it and run a test burn. |
| The target speed is absent | The recorder or media has not exposed that speed to Nero; an override is not documented. | Check the drive’s specifications, firmware, and another compatible CD-R or recorder. |
| Nero burns more slowly than selected | Determine maximum speed may have reduced the requested value to help prevent a buffer underrun. | Clear that option only if you understand the reliability trade-off, then test again. |
What “Determine maximum speed” does
Nero states that Determine maximum speed checks the access speed and can reduce the selected write speed when necessary to prevent a buffer underrun. Therefore, selecting 4x does not guarantee that the actual burn will remain at 4x. The option is intended to favor a successful burn when the system, drive, or media cannot sustain the selected rate.

If the burn fails or the speed is wrong
Confirm the selected recorder
Return to the burn window and verify that Nero is using the intended physical drive, not a different optical recorder or virtual device. The available advanced settings can vary with the selected recorder.
Try a lower listed speed
Nero support recommends trying a lower speed when a burn fails. Use the lowest value that Nero actually offers; do not assume that a blank disc will make an unavailable 1x or 2x option appear.

Check firmware for the exact model
Nero’s support article, modified May 8, 2023, says a disc-speed issue can probably be solved by updating firmware. Use the recorder manufacturer’s support page and apply firmware intended for the exact model and hardware revision.
Change the test conditions
If the problem continues, Nero recommends trying another recorder, changing the write method where the application offers that choice, and reviewing the Nero application log. These are troubleshooting suggestions, not guarantees that a particular speed, drive, or disc will work.

For a controlled test, use a fresh blank CD-R and record which recorder, firmware version, media, selected speed, and final log result were involved. Nero lists CD-R among its supported formats on its CD-burning guide.
Does a CD-R support 4x, 2x, or 1x?
Compatibility is determined by the particular recorder and media, not by Nero’s menu alone. No recorder model or CD-R/drive compatibility matrix is established here, so a specific low-speed result cannot be promised. Nero’s audio-CD instructions use 4X (600 kb/s) as an example, but that example is not evidence that every burner supports 4x; see Nero’s audio-CD how-to.

Practical decision rule
- Speed listed: select it, decide whether to leave Determine maximum speed enabled, and test.
- Speed missing: treat it as unsupported or unavailable for that drive/media combination; verify specifications and firmware instead of trying to force it.
- Burn fails: lower the listed speed, test different media or a different recorder, update applicable firmware, and save the Nero log.
The Bottom Line
Nero lets you select 4x, 2x, or 1x only when the chosen recorder exposes that speed. Use Burn Compilation > Writing > Write speed, understand that Determine maximum speed may lower the rate, and troubleshoot missing or failed speeds through recorder specifications, firmware, media, logs, or another drive.
