1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsYou can select a Narrator voice for a language and adjust its speaking speed in Windows 11. However, Microsoft’s published instructions do not confirm that Windows saves a separate speed for each language or voice. Set the speed for the voice you want, then switch away and back to check whether your Windows build retains it.
Change the speed for a Narrator voice
- Press Windows logo key + Ctrl + N to open Narrator settings.
- Under Narrator’s voice, select the voice associated with the language you want to adjust. The choices depend on which voices are installed on your PC.
- Expand Show all settings for that voice.
- Adjust Speed, then listen to a short sample in the target language to check that the pace is comfortable.
Microsoft describes this control as: “Speed: Control the speed at which Narrator speaks.” Its Narrator customization guide explains how to choose a voice and adjust its characteristics, but does not say that speed is stored independently for every language or voice.
Check whether Windows keeps a separate rate
If you need different rates for different languages, set the speed for one voice, select another installed voice, and then return to the first. Check whether the first rate remains as you set it. This is a practical check on your own Windows build, not a persistence behavior Microsoft documents or guarantees.
Install a voice for a language
If the voice you need is not listed, add one through Narrator’s legacy voice options:

- Return to Narrator settings and select the installed voice under Narrator’s voice.
Microsoft’s supported languages and voices guide describes this installation route. The voices available on your device can vary, so check the list in Windows rather than assuming a particular voice is present.
What Narrator does when the text changes language
Narrator automatically selects a text-to-speech voice for text in another language when a matching voice is installed. Microsoft states: “When reading text in a different language, Narrator will automatically select the text-to-speech (TTS) voice for that language if it’s installed.” If no matching voice is installed, Narrator announces the language and reads the text using the default TTS voice. See Microsoft’s guide to reading text with Narrator.

How fast can Narrator voices speak?
Microsoft’s customization guide gives approximate figures, not guarantees for individual voices: Narrator voices average a maximum of about 400 words per minute, while Microsoft David, Microsoft Zira, and Microsoft Mark are listed at about 800 words per minute. These vendor-published approximations are not recommended targets; the useful rate depends on the voice and your listening needs.
