Choose the GOP size for your frame rate
YouTube labels this setting “Keyframe frequency,” while FFmpeg encoder options commonly refer to GOP size. For a standard RTMP/RTMPS live stream, YouTube Help recommends 2 seconds and says not to exceed 4 seconds. The official guidance was checked in 2026; the page does not display a publication date. When the selected encoder interprets -g as a frame count, calculate the value using the actual encoded frame rate:
GOP size in frames = target interval in seconds × encoded frames per second

These values apply when the encoder option counts frames as assumed. FFmpeg documents g / gop_size for relevant encoders, but option semantics and availability can depend on the chosen encoder and build. Check that encoder’s help rather than assuming every codec wrapper behaves identically. FFmpeg Codecs Documentation.
Set a closed GOP in FFmpeg
YouTube’s official Live API health documentation identifies open GOP as unsupported and asks users to change the encoder to closed GOP. FFmpeg documents the cgop flag for closed GOP behavior; the controls available and their effect depend on the encoder. YouTube Live API configuration issues.

ffmpeg -i INPUT -c:v libx264 -r 30 -g 60 -flags +cgop -c:a aac OUTPUTThis fragment illustrates GOP-related settings only. It is not a complete YouTube publishing command: supply the input handling, video bitrate and rate control, audio settings, RTMPS ingestion destination, and any other requirements for your stream. Verify that the chosen encoder supports the options as expected. The official FFmpeg documentation describes the relevant options; it does not make this example a tested or universal command.
Check protocol-specific guidance
Do not apply one protocol’s limit to every YouTube ingest workflow. For ordinary RTMP/RTMPS encoder settings, use the 2-second target and 4-second maximum above. YouTube’s DASH-specific guide instead says the GOP should be about 2 seconds and less than 8 seconds, and also requires closed GOPs. Test the stream and troubleshoot GOP warnings
- Confirm the encoded frame rate. Calculate the frame-count GOP from the output rate, not an assumed source rate. If output is 60 fps, a 2-second GOP is 120 frames.
- Check the encoder’s options. Confirm the selected FFmpeg encoder supports the GOP and closed-GOP controls you intend to use; wrappers expose different private options.
- Run a test stream before going live. YouTube recommends testing and monitoring stream health. Inspect the health messages for long or very short GOPs, open GOP, or a keyframe-frequency mismatch between primary and backup feeds. The Live API documentation cautions that ingestion errors can also make reported GOP sizes incorrect.
