You can manage Fortnite’s chat, friend requests, content ratings, purchases, AI communication and play time from the Epic Games Account Portal or Fortnite’s in-game Parental Controls menu. Create a six-digit parental-control PIN first, then apply the restrictions you want. If your child uses a console or phone, also configure that platform’s family settings because Epic’s controls cover Epic accounts and experiences, not every activity on the device.
What Epic Games parental controls can manage
Epic’s parental controls apply to the child’s Epic Games account and expose the same core settings in two places: the Epic Account Portal and Fortnite’s Parental Controls menu. Depending on the account and region, you can control:
- Voice chat and text chat audiences.
- Friend requests and other social permissions.
- Mature-language filtering.
- The maximum age rating for Fortnite experiences.
- Access to mature content in the Epic Games Store.
- Purchases and paid random items in Fortnite.
- Daily play time, allowed play windows, and separate Play and Create limits in Fortnite and UEFN.
- Whether voice and written communication with AI features is allowed.
These settings do not replace the family controls built into PlayStation, Xbox, Nintendo Switch, Android, iPhone or iPad. Those platform controls can limit the whole device, including non-Epic games, browser use and overall screen time.

Use the parent’s access to the child’s Epic account
Sign in to the child’s Epic Games account at the Epic Account Portal. The account must be accessible to the parent or guardian who will create and use the PIN. If Epic has placed the account in a consent flow, complete the required parent or guardian verification before expecting every setting to appear.

Check the account identity on a console
When a child mainly plays on a console, compare the Account ID shown on the Epic Account Portal with the Account ID displayed in Fortnite. A console profile can be linked to a different Epic account than the one you intended to protect. Changing settings on the wrong account will not affect the child’s actual Fortnite profile.
Understand the PIN before creating it
Epic requires a six-digit parental-control PIN to protect changes. Choose a number the child cannot easily guess and store it in a password manager or another secure place. Epic’s support guidance states: "The Parental Controls PIN on an Epic Games account cannot be removed once it has been set." You can turn individual restrictions off or change them later after entering the PIN, but the PIN itself remains associated with the account.
Set parental controls in the Epic Account Portal
- Sign in to the child’s Epic Games account at the Epic Account Portal.
- Open Parental Controls.
- Create and confirm a six-digit PIN when Epic prompts you.
- Review the available sections for the Epic Games Store, Epic Games Launcher and Fortnite.
- Set social, content, spending, time and AI-communication preferences.
- Save each change and test the result from the child’s account.
The portal is useful when you want to review several categories in one session or when Fortnite is not currently installed on the device. The controls shown there are the account-level settings that Fortnite reads when the child signs in.

Set or change controls from Fortnite
- Launch Fortnite on the child’s device.
- Open the sidebar or hamburger menu.
- Select Parental Controls.
- Enter the six-digit PIN.
- Change the relevant setting, then confirm or save it.
You can also return to the Epic Account Portal later. The in-game menu and the portal expose the same core Fortnite controls, so use whichever is easier to reach. If a setting appears different between devices, first confirm that both devices are signed in to the same Epic account and that the game has synchronized after the change.
Control voice chat, text chat and friend requests
Epic provides four audience choices for voice and text chat: Everybody, Friends & Teammates, Friends Only and Nobody/Off. Related controls cover friend requests and mature-language permissions. Choose the narrowest audience that matches how your child plays; a setting that permits team communication can still expose a child to people who are not on the child’s friends list.

Age-based limits
Epic applies age caps that can override a parent’s attempt to select a broader audience. For children under 10, the maximum voice and text setting is Friends Only. For children under 13, the maximum is Friends & Teammates. If the option you want is missing, the account’s recorded age may be limiting the choices rather than a software fault.
Turn off chat completely
To prevent Fortnite voice or text communication, open Parental Controls, enter the PIN and set the relevant chat option to Nobody/Off. Voice and text are separate choices, so check both if you want a complete chat block. Also review the child’s console or mobile communication settings, which can independently restrict or permit platform-level party chat.
Set Fortnite content-rating limits
Every Fortnite experience has a content rating. In Parental Controls, set the highest rating the child may access. Fortnite then requires the parental-control PIN when someone attempts to open an experience rated above that limit.
The same principle applies to age-rated mature content in the Epic Games Store: the account can browse or use content only up to the permitted level without the PIN. Explain to the child that entering a higher-rated experience is not an ordinary game error; it is an intentional permission gate that requires the parent.
Choose a rating that fits the child
- Use the rating appropriate for the child’s age and your household rules.
- Recheck the limit when the child’s age, maturity or the games they play changes.
- Remember that a rating limit controls access to the experience; it does not by itself restrict time spent inside an allowed experience.
Restrict purchases and paid random items
Epic’s account controls can restrict Fortnite purchases and paid random items. Enable the purchase restriction before allowing the child to use stored payment methods or account credit. Then make a small, known test purchase only if you need to verify the setting, and check the account’s transaction history afterward.

Account-level purchase controls are not the only safeguard. A console or mobile store may have its own payment profile, wallet, family approval workflow or purchase PIN. Configure those platform controls as well, and remove saved payment methods when a child does not need independent purchasing access.
Set Fortnite and UEFN time limits
Fortnite and UEFN Time Limit Controls let you regulate both duration and schedule. You can set a total daily allowance, define windows when play is permitted, separate Play and Create limits, and decide whether the child may request additional time.
Configure a daily allowance
- Open Parental Controls in Fortnite or the Epic Account Portal.
- Enter the PIN.
- Open the Fortnite/UEFN time-limit section.
- Set the total time allowed for each day.
- Save the schedule and confirm the time zone shown by the account or device.
Define allowed windows
Use allowed windows when you want Fortnite available only after homework, during weekends or at another specific period. A daily allowance and a time window solve different problems: the allowance limits total minutes, while the window limits when those minutes may be used. Apply both when the child should have a fixed amount of play only during approved hours.
Separate Play and Create
If the child uses Fortnite for both matches and UEFN creation, set separate limits for Play and Create. This prevents creative-building sessions from consuming the entire allowance intended for matches, or lets you permit creation while applying a stricter limit to competitive play.
Handle extra-time requests
Choose whether the child can request more time after reaching the limit. If requests are enabled, treat each request as a parent decision rather than an automatic extension; the PIN is still required to change the underlying controls.

Allow or block communication with AI features
Fortnite currently includes an Allow voice and written communication with AI Features setting. To change it:
- Open Fortnite Parental Controls or Epic Account Settings.
- Enter the parental-control PIN.
- Under General, find Allow voice and written communication with AI Features.
- Turn the setting on or off and save the change.
A Cabined Account must complete account setup first; the AI-communication switch may not be available until the required parental consent process is finished.
Understand Cabined Accounts and parental consent
Epic may create a Cabined Account when a player is under 13 or below the region’s age of digital consent. Until a parent or guardian provides consent and completes account setup, Epic can disable several features:
- Voice chat and free text chat.
- Real-money purchases.
- Downloads of non-Epic games.
- Recommendations and marketing notifications.
- Some account-linking options.
- Custom display names.
- SMS-based two-factor authentication.
The child can still play Epic games such as Fortnite with content already earned or purchased. Completing consent and account setup is therefore different from merely changing a chat switch: it unlocks account capabilities that a parental-control preference cannot enable on its own.
Epic controls versus console and mobile family controls
Use both layers when the child plays on a shared device. Epic controls follow the Epic account and its Epic experiences. Platform controls can apply to every game or app on that device.

After configuring Epic, open the family settings for PlayStation, Xbox, Nintendo Switch or the child’s mobile device and review communication, age ratings, purchases and screen-time limits there. Platform menus and labels vary by manufacturer and can change independently of Fortnite.
Troubleshoot common problems
My child cannot use voice or text chat
- Check whether the account is a Cabined Account awaiting parental consent and setup.
- Open Epic Parental Controls and confirm that voice and text are not set to Nobody/Off.
- Check whether the child’s age limits the available audience.
- Review console or mobile family settings and any system-level party-chat restriction.
- Confirm that the child is signed in to the Epic account whose settings you changed.
The PIN does not work
Enter the six digits carefully and make sure you are using the parental-control PIN, not the console profile PIN or an account password. If the account has multiple adults managing it, verify that everyone is using the same current PIN. Do not repeatedly guess; recover the account through Epic’s official support process if you no longer know the PIN.
A setting changed but Fortnite still behaves the old way
Close and relaunch Fortnite, check the network connection, and allow the account to synchronize. Then revisit Parental Controls from the portal and in-game menu. If the behavior persists, verify the Account ID and inspect the platform’s family settings for a second restriction or permission that is taking precedence.

The child can still access a feature that Epic blocked
Determine whether the feature is being used through another Epic account, a linked console account or a platform-level service. Account controls do not automatically transfer to a sibling’s profile or to a different Epic account on the same device.
