For a 2160p60 YouTube Live loop, use FFmpeg’s h264_nvenc encoder with CBR, a 2-second keyframe interval (-g 120 at 60 fps), AAC stereo audio, and an RTMPS ingest URL. YouTube’s current English-US live guidance recommends 50 Mbps video for H.264 at 2160p60; HEVC or AV1 are alternatives at 35 Mbps if your GPU, FFmpeg build, and ingest path support them. The command below is a starting template, not a universally tested configuration: validate it with your installed encoder and a private or unlisted test stream before relying on it.

What to set for a 4K60 YouTube Live stream

YouTube’s live encoder recommendations are different from its file-upload recommendations. For live ingest at 2160p60, the current English-US settings page recommends the following video bitrates. These are YouTube platform recommendations, not guarantees of stream stability.

Codec YouTube recommended video bitrate at 2160p60 YouTube listed minimum FFmpeg NVENC encoder name
H.264 50 Mbps 14 Mbps h264_nvenc
HEVC/H.265 35 Mbps 10 Mbps hevc_nvenc
AV1 35 Mbps 10 Mbps Encoder name and availability depend on the GPU and FFmpeg build

H.264 is the practical starting point when broad compatibility matters. Use HEVC or AV1 only after confirming that your installed GPU and FFmpeg build can encode that codec in real time and that the YouTube ingest path you are using accepts it. NVIDIA GPU capability varies by generation; the name of an encoder in a command does not prove the installed card supports it.

  • Rate control: CBR (-rc cbr).
  • Keyframes: YouTube recommends a 2-second interval and allows no more than 4 seconds. At 60 fps, that means 120 frames recommended and 240 frames maximum.
  • Protocol: RTMPS is YouTube’s recommended live ingest option.
  • Audio: YouTube lists AAC or MP3 for RTMP/RTMPS and recommends 128 kbps stereo.
  • SDR color: Rec. 709, 8-bit. HDR is a separate workflow; do not add HDR flags unless the source is actually HDR and the YouTube ingest setup is configured for HDR.

Check the source, GPU, and network first

Confirm the video and audio properties

Before encoding, check that the file is actually 3840×2160 at 60 frames per second and inspect its audio codec, channel layout, and sample rate. A file called “4K60” may not have those properties. Avoid forcing a 60 fps output from a lower-frame-rate source unless you intend to duplicate frames; avoid scaling unless you have decided how to preserve the source’s aspect ratio. For SDR, confirm that the color is suitable for Rec. 709 rather than tagging an unrelated source with new color metadata.

Confirm your FFmpeg build and encoder support

Run ffmpeg -hide_banner -encoders and look for the relevant NVENC encoder, such as h264_nvenc. Then inspect the local encoder options with ffmpeg -hide_banner -h encoder=h264_nvenc. Replace the encoder name to inspect HEVC or AV1 if applicable. Preset names, tuning options, and supported features depend on the FFmpeg build, driver, and GPU. If p6, hq, CBR, or another option is rejected, use the options your local help lists rather than assuming a setting from another system applies.

Measure sustained upload at the streaming location

Measure stable upload throughput on the actual wired connection that will run the stream. Account for other household or office traffic, and do not treat an advertised download speed as evidence of sufficient upload capacity. The chosen video bitrate is not the whole network load: audio and transport overhead also use bandwidth, and a connection that only just reaches the video target leaves little room for variation. This guide does not establish an India-specific ISP speed or routing figure; conditions depend on the connection and location.

Get a YouTube stream key and RTMPS address

  1. In YouTube Studio, open the live-stream setup and select the stream settings for the broadcast. Create or select the stream you intend to use.
  2. Copy the server URL and stream key shown in the live settings. Use the RTMPS server address when YouTube offers it for your ingest setup.
  3. Keep the stream key private. Treat it like a password: anyone with access to it may be able to send a stream to your channel. Do not paste it into a public post, source repository, or screenshot.
  4. When testing, use a private or unlisted broadcast if appropriate. Check YouTube’s stream health and messages before making the stream public.

The command below uses YouTube’s common RTMPS live endpoint as an example. If Studio displays a different server URL for your stream, use the URL YouTube provides. Do not include angle brackets around the key in a real command.

FFmpeg NVENC command template for a loop

For a source that is already 2160p60 SDR with compatible audio, this H.264 template uses a 2-second GOP, CBR, a high-quality NVENC preset where available, AAC stereo audio, and an RTMPS output. Replace the input filename and stream key. Validate every encoder option with the local FFmpeg build before using it for a long broadcast.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
ffmpeg -re -stream_loop -1 -i "input.mp4"
  -c:v h264_nvenc -preset p6 -tune hq
  -rc cbr -b:v 50M -maxrate 50M -bufsize 100M
  -g 120 -bf 2
  -c:a aac -b:a 128k -ar 44100 -ac 2
  -f flv "rtmps://a.rtmps.youtube.com/live2/STREAM_KEY"

What the important options do

  • -re reads the media at its native pace instead of sending the file as fast as the disk can supply it.
  • -stream_loop -1 asks FFmpeg to repeat the input indefinitely. Its behavior at the end of your particular file and build must be tested; it does not guarantee a seamless visual or audio transition.
  • -c:v h264_nvenc selects NVIDIA’s H.264 encoder. For HEVC, use hevc_nvenc only if supported, and set the video target to YouTube’s 35 Mbps recommendation for 2160p60. Do not assume AV1 is available simply because YouTube lists it.
  • -preset p6 -tune hq is a quality-oriented starting point where those options exist. A slower preset can consume more encoding resources; verify that the system sustains real-time 60 fps without encoder overload.
  • -rc cbr -b:v 50M -maxrate 50M requests constant bitrate at the H.264 target. The 50 Mbps figure is YouTube’s recommended video bitrate for H.264 2160p60, not an all-codec setting.
  • -bufsize 100M is an example VBV buffer setting, not a YouTube-mandated value. NVIDIA discusses buffer configuration for NVENC; check the behavior of your installed FFmpeg encoder and adjust if necessary.
  • -g 120 sets a 120-frame GOP, or 2 seconds at 60 fps. At that frame rate, 240 frames corresponds to YouTube’s 4-second maximum interval.
  • -bf 2 requests two B-frames, consistent with YouTube’s advanced encoder recommendation. B-frames can improve compression but add reordering latency; omit or adjust this option if the encoder or ingest path does not behave correctly.
  • -c:a aac -b:a 128k -ar 44100 -ac 2 re-encodes audio to 128 kbps AAC stereo at 44.1 kHz. Inspect the source first; if it has no audio, or you need a different channel layout or sample rate, change the audio handling rather than blindly copying these options.
  • -f flv selects the output container used for RTMP/RTMPS ingest. The stream key is appended to the RTMPS URL shown in the command.

The template assumes the source itself is 2160p60. It does not force a resolution or frame rate, so a source with different properties will not become native 4K60 just because it is sent to a 4K60 live setup. If you need scaling or frame-rate conversion, make that an intentional change and test the resulting picture, timing, and GPU load.

Switching codec targets

For HEVC, first verify the local encoder exists and the YouTube ingest path accepts it; then replace the H.264 encoder with hevc_nvenc and set -b:v and -maxrate to 35M for the 2160p60 recommendation. For AV1, the same 35 Mbps recommendation applies, but the exact FFmpeg encoder name and hardware support are build- and GPU-dependent. Do not combine settings from an AV1 or HEVC example with an H.264 encoder without checking the local encoder help.

Test the loop before relying on it

  1. Run the command against a private or unlisted test stream using a representative section of the actual video and audio.
  2. Watch YouTube Live’s stream health and messages while checking FFmpeg’s output for encoder errors, dropped frames, connection failures, and reconnects.
  3. Let the file reach its end and loop back. Check for a black frame, abrupt scene jump, audio click or gap, timestamp problem, or disconnect at the boundary. Repeat the test if the source has multiple transitions or audio tracks.
  4. Confirm that the system can encode at real time for the duration you need. A preset that works briefly may not sustain 60 fps under continued load.
  5. Test the actual upload connection during normal competing network use. A short speed test is useful, but a representative private stream is the better check for the complete setup.

YouTube recommends testing before going live and monitoring stream health and messages during the event. The loop flag is a mechanism for repeating input; the visual and audio quality of the transition depends on the media and should be verified locally.

Copyright, reused content, and continuous broadcasts

Only stream material you have the necessary rights to use, including music, images, and any third-party footage in the recording. A video being available online or being labeled “free” does not by itself establish permission to rebroadcast it. YouTube may restrict or interrupt a live stream when it detects protected material, so review the rights and any license conditions before looping a recording.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Copyright permission and monetization eligibility are separate questions. A channel should not assume that repeatedly streaming material it can legally use automatically satisfies YouTube’s monetization rules for original or reused content. Review the current YouTube policies for your channel and content; this article does not guarantee that a particular loop will remain available or be monetized.

Troubleshooting common FFmpeg NVENC problems

Symptom Likely cause What to check or change
Unknown encoder 'h264_nvenc' The FFmpeg build does not include the encoder, or the installed environment cannot access it. Check ffmpeg -encoders, the FFmpeg build, driver, and GPU support. Do not assume installing a different preset fixes a missing encoder.
Option or preset is rejected The option name or preset is not exposed by this FFmpeg/NVENC combination. Inspect ffmpeg -h encoder=h264_nvenc and use the supported spelling and values. Presets and tuning options can vary by build and hardware.
Encoder overload or output below 60 fps The selected preset, resolution, codec, or other GPU workload exceeds the system’s real-time capacity. Check encoder utilization and FFmpeg frame progress. Try a faster supported preset, reduce competing GPU work, or choose a codec the GPU can sustain.
YouTube reports unstable bitrate or dropped frames Upload variation, competing traffic, insufficient headroom, or an encoder that is not sustaining its target. Measure sustained upload at the streaming location, reduce competing traffic, inspect FFmpeg’s output, and repeat a representative test. Do not infer upload reliability from download speed.
YouTube rejects the stream or shows no incoming video Wrong server URL or key, unsupported codec/path, or an output configuration mismatch. Copy the current RTMPS address and key from the intended YouTube Studio stream settings; check that the chosen codec is supported on both ends.
Audio is silent, distorted, or out of sync Source audio format or channel layout differs from what the output options expect, or the file has a loop-boundary discontinuity. Inspect the source’s audio streams and test the end-to-start transition. Adjust mapping, encoding, sample rate, or channel count to match the media and intended output.
A visible jump, click, gap, or disconnect occurs at the loop point The file’s last and first frames or audio samples do not form a seamless transition, or timestamps/reconnect behavior need adjustment. Inspect the file boundary and test the chosen loop method with the installed FFmpeg build. Edit or replace the source if the transition itself is discontinuous.
