There is no single spending-limit switch for Claude Code. First identify how your use is billed: through a Claude subscription, an Anthropic Console/API organization, or a cloud provider. Each route has different controls, and /usage is not a substitute for checking the account that receives the bill.
Start by identifying your billing route
Anthropic says Claude Code charges by API token consumption, but the bill depends on how you authenticate and where usage is charged. Subscription usage draws on the plan’s allowance; Console/API usage is billed to the Anthropic organization; and use through Amazon Bedrock, Google Cloud’s Agent Platform, or Microsoft Foundry is billed to the relevant cloud account. There is no universal Claude Code budget control that applies to all three routes. See Anthropic’s cost guide.

Set a monthly cap for Console/API billing

Sign in to Claude Code using your Claude Console account. When an organization member first does this, Anthropic automatically creates a Claude Code workspace.

In the Console, open Settings > Workspaces, select the Claude Code workspace, then open its Spend limits tab.

Set the workspace’s monthly spend limit and configure alerts. Check that the workspace is not the Default Workspace: Anthropic does not allow a separate limit on that workspace.

Check the organization’s limits as well. A workspace-specific limit cannot be higher than the organization limit. Workspace rate limits are separate: they constrain request or token throughput, not a dollar budget. See Anthropic’s cost-management guidance and rate-limit documentation.
For actual API billing, use the Console Usage page. The dollar figure for a session in Claude Code’s /usage view is calculated locally and is an estimate, not an invoice. Organizations can configure managed model pricing for reporting, but that does not make the session estimate authoritative. Anthropic describes cost tracking and billing and the Usage and Cost API.

Prevent extra usage charges on Pro or Max
Your subscription’s included usage is governed by its usage windows. Extra usage credits are a separate way to continue after the included allowance is used. If credits are enabled, check their status and set a monthly spend limit before relying on them; do not assume the subscription allowance is also a cap on paid credits.

When usage credits are enabled, it shows current-month credit spending and compares it with a monthly limit if one is configured. If no limit is set, the row may show Unlimited; that is not a hard cap. Pro and Max users may be prompted to raise or remove a limit after reaching it. Anthropic documents these controls in its extra usage guidance.
Manage Teams and Enterprise usage credits
Claude Code draws from a member’s seat allowance, which is shared with Claude chat and Cowork. If an organization enables usage credits so members can continue beyond their included allowances, an administrator can set spend limits for an organization, group, or individual member in Claude account administration.

The /usage view reports an individual’s current-month credit spending against an applicable individual limit. An organization-wide cap may not appear as an individual row, so administrators should also review organization analytics rather than treating each member’s view as the complete budget picture. Set controls for cloud-provider billing
If Claude Code is configured to use Amazon Bedrock, Google Cloud’s Agent Platform, or Microsoft Foundry, the provider account is billed. Set and monitor budgets in that provider’s billing console; Anthropic’s Claude Code analytics do not include cloud-billed use.

Monitor usage and reduce avoidable consumption

/usageto inspect session token usage and plan details. For Console/API billing, verify charges on the Console Usage page; the session dollar figure is only an estimate. -
If you use subscription usage credits, confirm that they are enabled and check the monthly limit. Treat Unlimited as no configured cap, not as protection from extra charges.

Review limits and alerts in the Claude Code workspace for Console billing, or in the cloud provider’s billing console for cloud usage. For Teams and Enterprise, check organization analytics as well as individual views.

Use
/clearwhen you move to unrelated work so stale context is not carried into later requests. Anthropic identifies context size, model choice, and concurrent or automated usage patterns as cost drivers; keep sessions focused, choose a model suited to the task, and avoid unnecessary parallel instances or agent teams. Do not rely on
