Set up three layers of alerts: percentage-change notifications to find unusually large moves, price levels tied to a written decision, and news or earnings notices that explain a possible catalyst. Put broad sector ETFs and a few representative stocks on one watchlist, add a broad-market benchmark, and review every trigger in context. An alert is a prompt to investigate—not an automatic buy or sell signal.
What these alerts are designed to tell you
A useful alert system answers three different questions:
- Did something move unusually far? A percentage-change alert scans for an outsized move relative to a prior close or selected bar period.
- Did price reach a decision level? A target-price alert marks a prior high, support area, valuation checkpoint, or level at which you will review an allocation.
- What may have caused it? Earnings, company news, economic headlines, and technical conditions provide context for a move.
Separating those questions prevents a common mistake: treating a notification designed for discovery as a trading instruction. The percentage condition finds candidates; your written plan determines what happens next.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:

Fidelity defines sector rotation as “rotating” in and out of sectors as time progresses and the economy moves through different phases of the business cycle. Its educational framework has four broad phases:

| Phase | How to use it with alerts |
|---|---|
| Early cycle | Watch for relative strength or breakouts in sectors that may respond first to improving growth and credit conditions. Treat any signal as a prompt to examine economic data and price confirmation. |
| Mid cycle | Monitor whether leadership is broadening or narrowing. Compare sector-ETF moves with the broad-market benchmark instead of judging an ETF’s gain in isolation. |
| Late cycle | Use alerts to identify changing leadership, rising volatility, and defensive or economically sensitive groups moving differently from the benchmark. |
| Recession | Keep alerts focused on risk review, earnings deterioration, and breaks of levels in your written plan rather than assuming a particular sector must lead. |
These relationships are tendencies, not a calendar. Fidelity reports 12 U.S. business cycles since 1945, with an average cycle length of about six years; the average expansion lasted five years and four months, while the average contraction lasted a little more than 10 months (Fidelity, 2026). Every cycle differs. Fidelity also warns that a rotation strategy can increase volatility or underperform broad indexes.
Sector ETFs are convenient instruments for monitoring and implementing a view because one symbol represents an industry group. Their narrow focus can also make them more volatile than diversified funds. That concentration is a reason to add a broad-market benchmark and to define your review rule before an alert fires.
Design the watchlist before creating notifications
Start with broad sector ETFs
List the sector ETFs that represent the groups you actually follow. A complete list is not automatically better: too many symbols create duplicate notifications and make it harder to identify meaningful relative moves. Record the ETF’s name, the decision you might make, and the level or condition that would cause a review.
Add representative stocks selectively
Add a small number of liquid, representative holdings for deeper investigation. Individual stocks need catalyst alerts because a company-specific earnings report, legal development, product announcement, or management change can overwhelm a sector signal.
Include a market benchmark
A broad-index symbol gives each sector move a reference. If the benchmark and most sectors move together, the event may be market-wide. If one sector moves while the benchmark is comparatively quiet, investigate sector-specific news, earnings, or technical positioning.
Write the decision attached to each alert
Before saving a notification, finish a sentence such as: “If this triggers, I will review sector exposure,” “I will check the earnings release,” or “I will compare the move with the benchmark before considering a rebalance.” An alert without a follow-up rule becomes noise.

Set up the alert layers step by step
1. Add percentage-change alerts for discovery
Choose a percentage condition that measures a move against a defined reference, such as the prior close or a selected number of bars. Fidelity documents percentage-change alerts. TradingView exposes “moving up %” and “moving down %” conditions over a selected number of bars.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?

There is no evidence-based universal percentage that defines a “large move” for every stock and sector. A percentage that is unusual for a broad ETF may be routine for a volatile single stock. Start by examining the symbol’s normal behavior in the chart and adjust the threshold so the alert identifies moves you are prepared to investigate. Label any trial setting as an experiment rather than a market standard.
For a sector ETF, a percentage alert can flag an abrupt change in leadership. For a representative stock, it can find a gap or intraday move that deserves a catalyst check. Configure both upward and downward conditions when the platform allows them; a falling move can be more important to risk management than a rising move.
2. Add price-level alerts tied to a plan
Use a target price for a level that has meaning in your process: a prior high, a support area, a valuation checkpoint, or a rebalance-review boundary. Fidelity describes alerts when a security rises above or falls below a target price. Schwab’s documented workflow uses a target-price alert.
Write down why the level matters and what information you will collect when it is reached. A price crossing by itself does not establish that a breakout will continue or that a decline will reverse.
3. Add earnings and news alerts for individual stocks
For each representative stock, add an earnings-report alert and a news or event alert where available. Schwab documents both categories. These notifications let you check whether a percentage move coincides with a scheduled report or a new event rather than inferring a cause from the chart alone.

Keep the catalyst alert separate from the price alert. If both fire together, you can connect the timing without losing the original price condition in your alert history.
4. Add technical and volume conditions when supported
Technical conditions can reduce manual chart checking, but they should remain part of the investigation layer. Fidelity Trader+ documents price-movement, 52-week-high/low, and exponential-moving-average (EMA) cross alerts. TradingView supports alerts on indicators, strategies, drawings, and chart patterns.
Use a 52-week condition to identify a new extreme, an EMA cross to flag a change in trend context, and a volume condition (where your platform offers one) to determine whether participation deserves closer review. Do not treat any one condition as confirmation of a cycle phase.

Choose a delivery channel you reliably monitor. Fidelity documents pop-up and sound notifications as well as configured delivery destinations. TradingView provides trigger-frequency and expiration controls, so decide whether an alert should fire once, repeatedly, or only until a specified date.
Set an expiration or review date for temporary ideas. A level based on an old thesis can remain active long after the thesis has changed. Audit the active-alert list at least monthly and remove symbols or conditions that no longer map to a decision.

Schwab’s documented mobile workflow emphasizes target-price alerts and event alerts, including earnings reports and news. The mobile interface provides an open-alert list for editing and a triggered-alert history retained for up to 30 days.
Schwab also notes that mobile alerts are not synchronized with thinkorswim or Schwab.com alerts. If you use more than one Schwab interface, check each platform’s active-alert list separately; an alert created in one should not be assumed to exist in the others.
TradingView
TradingView is a separate charting and alert layer rather than an alert system embedded in your brokerage account. It documents symbol and watchlist alert configuration, percentage-over-bars conditions, indicator, strategy, drawing, and chart-pattern alerts, plus trigger-frequency and expiration controls.
Use it when you need chart-based conditions or a watchlist-wide scan. Verify the current account’s symbol limits and plan rules in the interface, because the documented capabilities do not establish one universal watchlist allowance for every account.

Choose a threshold without pretending there is a universal “big move”
Official platform documentation explains how to configure percentage conditions but does not establish one percentage that works for all securities. Make the threshold a property of your process:

- Define the observation period. A move over one bar is not comparable with a move over several bars. Select the same period you intend to review.
- Separate ETFs from stocks. Broad sector ETFs and individual companies have different volatility profiles. Do not copy one symbol’s setting to every other symbol.
- Decide how much noise you can handle. A lower threshold finds more candidates and creates more notifications; a higher threshold reduces noise but can miss earlier developments.
- Record the setting and outcome. After several triggers, note whether each led to a useful review. Adjust the condition based on that record, not on a claim that a particular percentage is universally significant.
- Pair the percentage with direction and context. Use separate rising and falling conditions when possible, then compare the symbol with the benchmark and check catalysts.
An illustrative configuration might use one percentage alert for a sector ETF and a different, deliberately unshared setting for a volatile stock. Those numbers are examples of personalization, not evidence-based recommendations.
How to investigate a triggered alert
- Confirm the condition. Check the timestamp, direction, reference period, and whether the alert fired intraday or at a close.
- Compare with the benchmark. Determine whether the broad market moved in the same direction. A sector-only move calls for a different investigation than a market-wide shock.
- Check the sector group. Look at several holdings or related ETFs. One company’s move does not automatically establish sector rotation.
- Look for a catalyst. Review the stock’s earnings and news alerts, scheduled events, and relevant economic headlines.
- Inspect technical context. Check volume, the 52-week range, moving-average conditions, and nearby price levels if those are part of your plan.
- Apply the written decision rule. The result may be a research note, risk check, rebalance discussion, or no action. Do not create a trade merely because a notification arrived.
Practical alert templates
| Object | Alerts to configure | Follow-up |
|---|---|---|
| Sector ETF | Percentage move; price level for an allocation review | Compare with the broad benchmark and other sectors; review whether leadership is broadening or narrowing. |
| Representative stock | Percentage move; target price; 52-week or EMA condition where available; earnings and news alerts | Read the catalyst, inspect volume and trend context, and decide whether the move changes the company or sector thesis. |
| Market benchmark | Broad-index percentage alert and any planned price level | Classify the event as market-wide or relatively sector-specific before changing exposure. |
| Temporary thesis | Any relevant condition with an explicit expiration date | Remove or renew it only after reviewing the original thesis. |
Maintenance and troubleshooting
Too many notifications
Raise the threshold, reduce duplicate symbols, or move low-priority conditions to a watchlist review instead of immediate delivery. Keep the alerts that map directly to a decision.
No notification arrives
Verify that the alert is active, the symbol and condition are correct, the delivery channel is enabled, and the expiration date has not passed. If you use multiple Schwab interfaces, inspect each separately because mobile alerts are not synchronized with thinkorswim or Schwab.com alerts.
An alert fires repeatedly
Check the trigger-frequency setting. TradingView exposes frequency controls; choose a setting that matches whether you need one investigation prompt or repeated intraday notices.
The alert fired but the move is already gone
Review the timestamp and reference period, then distinguish an intraday notification from a closing-price decision. Alerts are not guaranteed execution signals, and a fast move can change before you complete your investigation.
A sector alert appears misleading
Compare the ETF with the benchmark and several constituents. Narrowly focused ETFs can be more volatile than diversified funds, and one constituent or company event can distort the sector’s headline move.
Risks and limits of a rotation-based alert system
- Business-cycle phases are retrospective frameworks and do not provide a guaranteed leadership sequence.
- Sector concentration can increase portfolio volatility relative to a diversified fund.
- Historical relationships can fail in a new cycle; a sector may underperform even when its expected phase appears to be underway.
- Technical alerts identify conditions, not causes. A price crossing an EMA or 52-week level does not establish that the trend will continue.
- Brokerage interfaces, delivery options, account limits, and plan rules can change. Confirm current settings before relying on a notification.
The most durable setup is therefore a small, documented system: broad sector ETFs and representative stocks on a watchlist, percentage alerts for discovery, price levels for decisions, catalyst alerts for explanation, a benchmark for comparison, and a scheduled audit of active conditions.
