You can get a brokerage notification when a stock, ETF, or index falls by a chosen percentage or reaches a specific price. Add the security to your holdings or watchlist, open the broker’s Alerts or Notifications tool (often the bell icon on a quote page), select a percentage or price trigger, add supporting volume, news, earnings, trend, or indicator alerts, then enable a delivery channel you reliably check.

Use an alert as a prompt to investigate—not as an automatic sell signal or an order. When it arrives, confirm the live quote, trading session, spread, and relevant news before deciding what to do.

What a brokerage alert actually measures

A large-drop alert compares a security with a defined reference point. The most common reference is the previous closing price. A 5% alert fires when the security is down 5% or more from that close, subject to the broker’s calculation rules and the time of day. A fixed-price alert instead watches for a level such as $95, regardless of where yesterday’s close was.

Those triggers answer different questions:

  • Percentage change: “Has this moved materially since the previous close?”
  • Fixed price: “Has this reached the dollar level that matters to my plan?”
  • Volume: “Is participation unusually high or low?”
  • Trend or indicator: “Has price crossed a moving average or another technical condition?”
  • News, earnings, and research events: “Is there a potential catalyst that may explain the move?”

No single alert captures volatility. Combining several signals gives context while avoiding the need to watch a chart continuously.

Set up a large-drop alert step by step

  1. Add the security. Search for the stock, ETF, or index and add it to your holdings view or a watchlist. Watchlist alerts are useful for securities you do not own; holdings alerts keep attention on positions already in your account.
  2. Open the alert controls. Look for Alerts, Notifications, Set alert, or a bell icon on the quote, chart, watchlist, or portfolio screen. Desktop and mobile labels can differ.
  3. Choose the trigger type. Select a percentage decrease when you care about a move relative to the prior close. Select a price-below condition when a particular dollar level is important.
  4. Enter the threshold. For example, enter 5% for an early review or 10% for a larger move. If the platform permits multiple alerts, use separate levels rather than one complicated rule.
  5. Add context alerts. Consider volume, news, earnings, moving-average, or indicator conditions for the same security. These can help distinguish a market-wide decline from a security-specific event.
  6. Select delivery. Enable push notifications, email, text messages, or any combination the broker offers. A channel is useful only if you notice it promptly.
  7. Check permissions and save. Confirm the broker is allowed to send notifications in the phone’s operating-system settings and that email or text delivery is enabled. Save the alert and verify that it appears in the active-alert list.
  8. Review the alert later. Check active alerts after changing a watchlist, replacing a phone, updating the app, or changing a trading plan. Delete obsolete levels so important notices are not buried.

Percentage versus fixed-price triggers

Trigger Best for Example Important limitation
Percentage decrease from previous close Detecting a material daily move across securities with different prices A 5% decline from yesterday’s close The reference is the prior close, not your purchase price or a valuation estimate.
Price below a selected amount A support, valuation, stop-review, or cash-management level stated in dollars Alert below $95 The same dollar level represents a different percentage move for every security.
Percentage move above or below a price Watching a target range around a level where the broker supports this combination A specified percentage move above or below a selected price Availability and wording vary by broker and software version.

Use percentages when comparing a $20 stock with a $200 stock or when your question is simply whether yesterday’s move was unusually large. Use a fixed price when your decision depends on a specific level, such as a planned review point. If you want staged awareness, an early alert and a larger-move alert can be more practical than one threshold. Too many levels create notification fatigue.

Choose thresholds that match the decision you need to make

Start by writing down what action an alert is supposed to prompt. A 5% decline might mean “read the news and check the position,” while a 10% decline might mean “perform a full risk and allocation review.” The percentages are examples, not universal buy or sell rules. They should fit your plan and the security’s normal behavior.

Percentage alerts are especially useful when your watchlist contains securities at very different prices. A 5% move in a $20 stock is about $1; a 5% move in a $200 stock is about $10. The percentage puts those moves on a comparable scale. It still measures only the change from the prior close, however, not the gain or loss on your position.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use a fixed-price trigger when a dollar level has independent meaning: a valuation range, a support level, a cash-management boundary, or a point at which you promised yourself to review the thesis. Recheck that level after a split, dividend, or other corporate action because the displayed price and the broker’s reference may be adjusted.

When supported, two or three staged alerts are easier to interpret than many nearly identical ones. For example, an early-review alert can be paired with a major-move alert, while a volume or news alert supplies explanation. If the platform offers only one alert per condition, choose the level tied to a clear decision rather than trying to reproduce every possible percentage.

Build a volatility-monitoring stack

1. Price movement

Start with a percentage-decrease alert or a price-below alert. For a position you want to investigate before panic sets in, an earlier threshold can prompt a review; a second, wider threshold can identify a more severe move. The exact percentages should reflect your plan and the security’s normal behavior, not a universal rule.

2. Trend and range

Moving-average or indicator alerts show whether a decline has changed the trend you follow. Fidelity’s Trader+ Desktop documentation describes alerts for 20-, 50-, and 200-day exponential moving averages, in addition to dollar or percentage price movement and 52-week highs or lows. Use a trend alert as context: a one-day drop through a moving average is a different situation from a prolonged decline below it.

3. Trading participation

Volume can reveal whether a move is attracting more participation than usual. Schwab documents alerts for a meaningful percentage change in trading volume. A price drop on ordinary volume may call for a different investigation than a drop accompanied by an abrupt volume surge.

4. Catalysts

Add earnings, news, research, and other corporate-event notifications where your platform supports them. An earnings announcement, regulatory development, analyst report, or company-specific headline may explain a sudden move that a price chart alone cannot.

5. Delivery resilience

Use at least one delivery channel you check reliably, and consider a second channel for alerts you cannot afford to miss. Push delivery depends on both broker availability and your device settings. Email can be delayed or filtered; text delivery may depend on account and carrier settings. No notification channel is guaranteed to arrive instantly.

Alert scope, timing, and recurrence

Before saving an alert, check four scope questions. Is it attached to a holding, a watchlist item, or both? Does it monitor regular-session quotes only, or can it react to premarket and after-hours prices? Is it a one-time notification that deactivates after firing, or does it recur? Which delivery channels are enabled for that specific alert rather than globally for the account?

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Broker interfaces do not use one standard vocabulary for these choices. A desktop tool may expose more conditions than a mobile app, and an alert created from a chart can have different defaults from one created in a portfolio screen. Read the confirmation screen and then inspect the active-alert list. If the interface does not state overnight or recurrence behavior, do not assume it.

How major brokerage platforms implement these alerts

The names and locations of controls change, so confirm the current interface after signing in. The documented capabilities below describe the alert types each platform currently identifies.

Platform Percentage or price alerts Volume, news, earnings Trend or indicator support Scope and delivery notes
Fidelity Alerts for price, percentage change since the previous close, and price movement in dollars or percent. Active Trader Tools defines “% Change Since Close” as a chosen increase or decrease from the previous close. Fidelity documents news and market alerts; the specific event choices depend on the tool. 52-week highs/lows and 20-, 50-, and 200-day exponential moving averages are documented in Trader+ Desktop. Push notifications are available in the mobile app. Whether a particular alert is one-time or recurring depends on the control used; the cited descriptions do not establish one universal rule.
Charles Schwab Watchlist alerts can use a target price, a percentage move above or below a price, or a meaningful percentage change. Customizable security alerts include price and volume, earnings, news, and research/report events. The cited portfolio-monitoring guidance does not specify one universal moving-average or indicator set. Delivery method is configurable. Overnight or extended-hours behavior and a single recurring-alert policy are not stated in the cited alert documentation.
Robinhood Stock price-movement thresholds of 5% or 10%, 52-week high/low alerts, and custom price moves above or below a selected amount. The support description focuses on price and indicator notifications; it does not list the same broad event set as Schwab. Indicator alerts are supported, with available indicators determined by the current app. Price-alert email and push notifications are available. Robinhood warns that delivery can be affected by service availability, app settings, and phone settings.

Fidelity’s tools are useful when you want both a previous-close percentage condition and longer trend references. Schwab’s watchlist workflow emphasizes combining target-price, percentage, volume, earnings, news, and report events. Robinhood offers simple 5% and 10% movement choices alongside custom price and indicator alerts. These are examples, not a guarantee that every account, security, or software version exposes identical controls.

These capabilities are not interchangeable. A menu available on desktop may be absent from a mobile app, and a broker can change thresholds or labels without changing your account. Open the alert editor for the exact security to see the choices currently available to you.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Account for trading sessions and quote behavior

Before acting on an alert, identify whether the quote came from regular trading, premarket, or after-hours activity. Extended-hours prices can move on thinner liquidity and wider spreads. The platform documentation summarized above does not establish one common overnight policy for all alerts, so do not assume that a trigger behaves identically outside regular hours.

Also distinguish a last-trade alert from a bid or ask condition when the interface gives you that choice. A last trade can be stale in a thinly traded security, while a wide bid-ask spread can make the displayed price difficult to trade at. Check the quote timestamp, bid, ask, and volume before treating the notification as a dependable executable level.

What to do when an alert fires

  1. Open the quote and confirm the move. Check the current price, percentage change, timestamp, and whether the alert is based on the regular-session or extended-hours quote.
  2. Look for a catalyst. Review the company’s news, earnings calendar, filings, and any event notification attached to the security.
  3. Compare the broader market. Check a relevant index or sector ETF. If many securities are falling together, the cause may be market-wide rather than specific to your holding.
  4. Inspect participation and liquidity. Review volume, bid-ask spread, and recent trading activity. A large move with unusually high volume warrants a different investigation from a small, illiquid print.
  5. Recheck your plan. Decide whether the alert calls for research, a rebalance review, a limit order, or no action. The notification itself does not choose among those responses.
  6. Record the decision. Note the price, time, catalyst, and action or non-action. A brief log helps you evaluate whether your thresholds are useful instead of changing them impulsively.

Broker notifications are informational prompts, not guaranteed execution and not personalized investment advice. Robinhood states: “Notifications are provided for informational purposes only, and aren’t a recommendation to buy, sell, or hold any particular security.”

Practical alert designs

Long-term holding

Use one percentage-decrease alert for an initial review and a second, wider percentage for a more substantial move if your broker supports both. Add earnings and company-news alerts, then a 52-week low or moving-average alert if those are part of your process. Keep the set small enough that a genuine event stands out.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Shorter-term position

Use a fixed price for a level tied to your trading plan and a percentage alert for an unusually large move. Add volume and a relevant indicator so a price breach is viewed alongside participation and trend. Confirm session and liquidity before placing any order.

ETF or index monitoring

Use percentage alerts to detect broad market moves and a fixed-price alert only if a specific level matters to your allocation plan. Add volume and news alerts where available. Monitoring an index alongside individual holdings can show whether a decline is concentrated or widespread.

Troubleshoot missing or unexpected notifications

The alert never arrived

  • Open the broker’s active-alert list and confirm the security, threshold, direction, and status.
  • Check phone notification permissions, Focus or Do Not Disturb modes, battery restrictions, and the broker’s in-app notification settings.
  • Verify the email address or phone number on the account and inspect spam or filtered-message folders.
  • Check whether the move occurred in a session or market that the alert type does not cover; the platform may not state this clearly.
  • Remember that delivery can be delayed or unavailable because of service or device conditions.

The alert fired at an unexpected level

  • Confirm whether the trigger used the previous close, a selected price, or a move above or below a price.
  • Check for a split, dividend, corporate action, or other adjustment that changed the reference price.
  • Review the quote timestamp and session, and compare the displayed last trade with bid and ask prices.
  • Check whether the broker rounds percentages or prices in the alert editor.

Too many alerts are arriving

  • Delete levels that no longer correspond to a decision.
  • Keep one early-review and one major-move threshold instead of several nearly identical percentages.
  • Move explanatory information to news or earnings alerts rather than creating another price trigger.
  • Use a volume or trend condition to add context, not as a reason to duplicate every price level.

Review the system regularly

Revisit alerts after a position changes materially, after an earnings cycle, and whenever you change devices or brokerage software. A threshold based on an old price can become meaningless after a split or a large portfolio change. Confirm that push, email, or text permissions still work by checking the broker’s test or notification settings when available.

Keep the final decision separate from the notification. An alert identifies a condition; it does not establish why the condition occurred, whether the quote is tradable, or what action fits your objectives and risk limits.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Should I use a percentage alert or a price alert?

Use a percentage trigger to detect a material move from the previous close across securities with different prices. Use a fixed-price trigger when a specific dollar level, valuation range, support point, or review boundary matters. They do not measure the same thing.

Can a brokerage alert monitor a stock I do not own?

Usually, you can add a security to a watchlist and create an alert without holding it. Schwab specifically documents watchlist-based target-price, percentage, and volume alerts. Check whether your broker separates watchlist and holdings alert menus.

Do alerts work during premarket and after-hours trading?

Do not assume they do. Extended-hours behavior differs by broker and alert type and may not be clearly stated. When an alert arrives, check the session, quote timestamp, bid, ask, and spread before acting.

Free tools Windows power users keep installed

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Why did my alert arrive late or not at all?

Delivery depends on broker service availability, app settings, operating-system permissions, battery restrictions, email filters, and carrier settings. Confirm the alert is active, verify the delivery address or number, check notification permissions, and use a second channel when practical.

What other alerts help explain a sudden drop?

Pair price alerts with meaningful volume changes, news, earnings, research or report events, moving averages, 52-week levels, and supported indicators. Several signals provide more context than a single volatility switch.

Are brokerage alerts the same as stop orders?

No. An alert is an informational prompt and does not submit an order or guarantee execution. Investigate the quote, catalyst, liquidity, and your plan before deciding whether any order is appropriate.

How often should I review my active alerts?

Review them after a material position change, an earnings cycle, a device replacement, an app update, or a corporate action. Remove obsolete thresholds so important notifications are not lost among duplicates.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The Bottom Line

Set a percentage-drop alert for moves from the previous close, a fixed-price alert for a level that matters in dollars, and supporting volume, news, earnings, or trend alerts for context. Verify delivery permissions and session behavior, then treat every notification as a prompt to investigate—not as an automatic trading instruction.
