For a 1080p60 gaming stream, YouTube’s current live-ingest recommendation is 17 Mbps with H.264 or 12 Mbps with AV1/H.265. At 1440p60, use 34 Mbps for H.264 or 24 Mbps for AV1/H.265. Set the encoder to constant bitrate (CBR), use a two-second keyframe interval, and test that your upload connection can sustain the selected bitrate. One important caveat: YouTube warns that a stream exceeding 12 hours may not be captured as an archive, so a continuous 24/7 broadcast is not a dependable way to create a complete YouTube VOD.

Choose a live bitrate by resolution, frame rate, and codec

YouTube publishes separate live-ingest recommendations for each resolution, frame rate, and video codec. These are starting points for sending a live stream to YouTube—not recommendations for uploading a finished video. Choose the row that matches your actual output.

Output format H.264 live bitrate AV1 or H.265 live bitrate
1080p30 14 Mbps 10 Mbps
1080p60 17 Mbps 12 Mbps
1440p30 21 Mbps 15 Mbps
1440p60 34 Mbps 24 Mbps
4K/2160p30 42 Mbps 30 Mbps
4K/2160p60 50 Mbps 35 Mbps

These are YouTube’s current live recommendations retrieved in 2026. YouTube also lists minimums, but a minimum is not the recommended target: at 1080p60, the minimum is 6 Mbps for H.264 and 4 Mbps for AV1/H.265; at 1440p60, it is 8 Mbps and 6 Mbps, respectively. For context, YouTube’s separate SDR upload guidance lists 12 Mbps for 1080p high-frame-rate video and 24 Mbps for 1440p high-frame-rate video. Those upload values should not be substituted for the live-ingest recommendations. See YouTube’s live encoder settings.

Which codec and bitrate should you pick?

  • Use the recommendation for the codec your encoder actually sends. For 1080p60, that means 17 Mbps for H.264 or 12 Mbps for AV1/H.265; for 1440p60, 34 Mbps for H.264 or 24 Mbps for AV1/H.265.
  • Match the output to your connection. A recommended bitrate is useful only if your upload is stable enough to maintain it. Test under representative conditions rather than assuming a brief speed-test result guarantees a reliable 24/7 stream.
  • Do not treat bitrate as a universal picture-quality fix. The right choice depends on codec, resolution, frame rate, game motion, and upload stability. If the connection cannot sustain the selected rate, lower the output or address the connection problem instead of forcing a bitrate it cannot carry.

Set the encoder for YouTube live ingest

YouTube’s RTMP/RTMPS guidance lists H.264, H.265 (HEVC), and AV1 video, frame rates up to 60 fps, CBR, and AAC or MP3 audio. It recommends RTMPS for the connection. The settings below reflect YouTube’s current guidance; encoder menus vary, so look for the equivalent controls in your software.

Setting Recommended value
Rate control CBR (constant bitrate)
Keyframe interval 2 seconds recommended; do not exceed 4 seconds
Video codec H.264, H.265/HEVC, or AV1
Frame rate Up to 60 fps
Audio codec AAC or MP3
Connection protocol RTMPS recommended
Scan and pixel format Progressive scan; square pixels
Advanced video settings Two B-frames, one reference frame, CABAC; Rec. 709 and 8-bit for SDR

For example, if you are sending 1080p60 H.264, configure CBR at 17 Mbps, a two-second keyframe interval, and the remaining applicable settings above. If your encoder offers a separate audio bitrate control, YouTube’s cited guidance specifies AAC or MP3 but does not establish a universal audio bitrate for every setup.

Test the stream before leaving it unattended

A stable-looking start does not prove a stream will stay healthy all day. YouTube recommends testing before going live, checking upload speed, monitoring stream health and messages, and verifying local archive recording. Use a test that resembles the real broadcast, including the game’s motion and its audio.

  1. Confirm the output. Set resolution, frame rate, codec, CBR, target bitrate, and keyframe interval in the encoder. Verify the selected codec matches the bitrate recommendation you chose.
  2. Check the upload connection. Run an upload-speed test and assess whether the connection can sustain the stream. A speed result is a snapshot, so observe actual stream health during the test as well.
  3. Send representative gameplay and audio. Test scenes with motion comparable to the content you plan to loop, and listen for audio problems rather than checking only the video.
  4. Monitor YouTube’s stream health and messages. Resolve warnings or instability before relying on the broadcast for long periods. Continue monitoring after launch; network and encoder conditions can change.
  5. Check the local recording. If recording an archive locally, confirm that recording is enabled and that the file continues to grow. Periodically inspect the recording for audio, video, and file-integrity problems.

Plan the VOD separately from the 24/7 broadcast

Bitrate settings do not remove YouTube’s archive-duration limitation. YouTube says streams shorter than 12 hours can be automatically archived, but warns: “If your stream exceeds 12 hours, it may not be captured at all.” A single uninterrupted 24-hour stream therefore cannot be relied on to produce a complete YouTube VOD. Read YouTube’s archive live streams guidance.

Keep a separate recording if the replay matters

YouTube recommends recording a local archive as a backup and checking that it is being recorded. A local recording can preserve footage even if the platform archive is incomplete or unavailable. Its storage needs depend on recording settings and duration; YouTube does not specify a drive type or capacity. An external SSD or hard drive is one possible place to store the file, but estimate capacity for your own format and schedule rather than assuming one size fits all.

Do not confuse a live loop with a published VOD

A live stream is a real-time broadcast; an archive is the replay YouTube may create afterward. If your goal is a complete, edited, or separately published VOD, preserve the source recording and plan how you will retain or publish it. Raising the resolution or bitrate does not solve the risk that a stream over 12 hours may not be captured.

Check rights and channel policies for gaming footage

A technically valid stream is not automatically cleared for every use. Before looping gameplay, check the rights and permissions that apply to the game, its soundtrack, overlays, and any other material in the recording. Avoid assuming that footage available online is free to rebroadcast. YouTube’s copyright policy information explains the platform’s copyright framework; review it alongside the applicable rights holder’s terms.

Also consider whether the channel’s overall content is sufficiently original and compliant with YouTube’s monetization policies. Repeating prerecorded material as a live broadcast does not itself establish eligibility for monetization. Review YouTube’s YouTube channel monetization policies before building a channel strategy around a continuous loop.

Troubleshoot common bitrate and archive problems

Symptom Likely issue What to check
Stream health warns of insufficient or unstable bitrate The upload connection may not sustain the selected live bitrate consistently. Check actual stream health and upload conditions; test again, reduce output if needed, or stabilize the connection.
Image looks poor during fast gameplay Bitrate, codec, output format, or connection may not suit the game’s motion. Confirm the encoder is using the intended codec and resolution/frame rate, compare against YouTube’s matching recommendation, and test representative gameplay.
Stream does not meet the expected YouTube ingest settings Encoder settings may differ from the selected target. Recheck CBR, codec, keyframe interval, frame rate, and protocol; use RTMPS where available.
YouTube archive is missing or incomplete after a long broadcast A stream exceeding 12 hours may not be captured at all. Use the local recording as the backup; do not assume a bitrate or resolution change will make a 24-hour platform archive complete.
Local backup stops growing or has no usable audio/video Recording may have stopped, storage may be unavailable, or the capture configuration may be wrong. Check recording status and available storage, verify that the file continues growing, and inspect a test recording before depending on it.
