For a 24/7 lofi stream, start with H.264 at 720p, 30 fps, and 8 Mbps video bitrate if your upload connection can sustain it. Choose 1080p at 30 fps and 14 Mbps when the visuals benefit from more detail and your connection has enough stable upload capacity. YouTube lists 3 Mbps and 5 Mbps, respectively, as the minimum H.264 rates for those settings—not its recommended rates. Use CBR, a 2-second keyframe interval, and separate audio settings; then test the actual stream before relying on it overnight.
Choose 720p or 1080p based on stable upload capacity
For a mostly static lofi visual, 30 fps is a sensible starting point; YouTube does not prescribe a lofi-specific resolution or frame rate. At the same frame rate, 720p needs less video bitrate than 1080p, while 1080p can preserve more visual detail. The right choice is the highest setting your connection can sustain steadily, not the highest setting it can briefly reach.
| H.264 ingestion setting | YouTube minimum video bitrate | YouTube recommended video bitrate | Practical use |
|---|---|---|---|
| 720p at 30 fps | 3 Mbps | 8 Mbps | Use when lower upload demand is the priority. For a more robust starting point, target the recommended 8 Mbps if your connection supports it. |
| 1080p at 30 fps | 5 Mbps | 14 Mbps | Use when added visual detail matters and the upload connection can sustain the higher rate. |
| 720p at 60 fps | Not stated in the cited 30 fps table | 8 Mbps | YouTube’s H.264 recommended rate at 60 fps; 30 fps is generally sufficient for a mostly static lofi scene. |
| 1080p at 60 fps | Not stated in the cited 30 fps table | 17 Mbps | YouTube’s H.264 recommended rate at 60 fps; use only when both motion and stable upload capacity justify it. |
The figures are YouTube’s published live H.264 ingestion guidance, accessed in 2026. They describe the signal sent to YouTube, not a guaranteed viewer playback resolution or a guarantee that a connection will remain stable. YouTube transcodes incoming live video into multiple output formats.
For other H.264 settings at 30 fps, YouTube lists 480p at 0.4 Mbps minimum and 4 Mbps recommended, and 360p at 0.4 Mbps minimum and 4 Mbps recommended. Consult YouTube’s bitrate table for the exact codec, resolution, and frame-rate combination you plan to use.

Configure the encoder and YouTube stream
- Check the upload connection. Run an upload speed test under conditions similar to the planned broadcast. YouTube advises that total stream bitrate should not exceed available upload bandwidth. Do not treat a speed test’s peak as a sustainable 24/7 target: leave headroom for ordinary fluctuations, since a brief drop can interrupt a stream.
- Set the video resolution and frame rate. Choose 1280 × 720 at 30 fps for 720p30, or 1920 × 1080 at 30 fps for 1080p30. YouTube recommends automatic resolution and frame-rate detection by default. If you need to force a resolution, use a custom stream key and enable manual settings in Stream Resolution.
- Choose a supported video codec and rate control. YouTube lists H.264, H.265 (HEVC), and AV1 for live ingestion. The bitrate values above are specifically for H.264. Set bitrate encoding to constant bitrate (CBR), and use the YouTube rate for your chosen H.264 resolution and frame rate when the connection can support it.
- Set the keyframe interval. Use 2 seconds; do not set an interval longer than 4 seconds.
- Configure audio separately from video. YouTube supports AAC or MP3 audio. For stereo, its guidance lists 44.1 kHz sample rate and 128 kbps. Do not count audio bitrate as video bitrate when entering the encoder’s video target.
- Connect using RTMP or RTMPS. In your encoder, enter the server address and stream key shown in YouTube Studio’s live-stream setup. Treat the stream key as a password: do not share it or include it in a public screenshot. If it is exposed, replace it in YouTube Studio and update the encoder.
- Test before the full broadcast. Send a private or unlisted test using the actual audio, visuals, and motion planned for the lofi stream. Check YouTube’s stream-health status and warnings, listen for audio problems, and confirm the picture remains stable before scheduling a long session.
Plan for 24/7 operation, not just picture quality
Keep bitrate within sustained upload capacity
For a long-running stream, stability matters more than a short-lived peak. If YouTube reports health warnings or the connection cannot maintain the selected rate, reduce the resolution or bitrate to a setting the connection can sustain, then test again. A higher setting that repeatedly drops is less useful than a lower, stable stream.
Know the archive and DVR limits
YouTube says a live stream longer than 12 hours may not be captured as an archive. DVR rewind may also be limited or unavailable for streams longer than 12 hours. If retaining a complete recording matters, YouTube recommends making a local recording as a backup. These duration caveats apply to a continuous 24/7 broadcast regardless of bitrate or resolution.

Use content you have the rights to stream
Use music and visuals that you created, licensed, or are otherwise authorized to broadcast on YouTube. A lofi label or a looping format does not by itself grant permission to use a track or image. Copyright claims or other rights issues can affect a live stream; review the copyright safety checklist before broadcasting.
Common bitrate and resolution problems
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Stream-health warnings or dropped frames | The upload connection is fluctuating or cannot sustain the selected total bitrate. | Test upload capacity again, reduce the target bitrate or resolution, leave more connection headroom, and run another test. |
| Picture looks softer than expected | The selected ingestion resolution or bitrate may be too low for the source visuals, or the viewer may be receiving a transcoded output. | Check the encoder’s actual output settings and YouTube stream health. Consider 1080p only if the connection can sustain its recommended H.264 rate. |
| Resolution or frame rate cannot be forced | YouTube’s default automatic detection is enabled. | Use a custom stream key and enable manual settings in Stream Resolution, as described in YouTube’s live guidance. |
| Audio sounds poor despite a stable picture | Audio codec, sample rate, channel layout, or audio bitrate may be configured separately and incorrectly. | Use AAC or MP3; for stereo, set 44.1 kHz and 128 kbps according to YouTube’s guidance. Check audio independently during the test. |
| No complete archive appears after a continuous broadcast | The stream exceeded 12 hours, beyond the duration for which YouTube says an archive may not be captured. | If a complete recording is important, make a local recording as a backup. |
