For a stable YouTube Live stream, set the encoder to the resolution and frame rate you intend to send, choose the bitrate YouTube recommends for that codec and mode, use constant bitrate (CBR), and set the keyframe interval to 2 seconds. YouTube says not to exceed 4 seconds. Then check measured upload capacity, configure YouTube’s stream controls, and test the full automation before relying on it.

Recommended YouTube Live settings at a glance

  • Bitrate: use YouTube’s recommended value for your ingest codec, resolution, and frame rate—not a generic number.
  • Rate control: CBR.
  • Keyframe interval: 2 seconds. If the encoder asks for frames, use 60 at 30 fps or 120 at 60 fps. YouTube says not to exceed 4 seconds.
  • Protocol: RTMPS where available; YouTube recommends it over RTMP.
  • Network: allow about 20% upload headroom above the stream bitrate, and account for other traffic and any backup stream.

YouTube’s Help pages do not display publication or update dates; the settings below reflect the pages checked on October 3, 2026. These are YouTube’s ingest recommendations, not a guarantee of a particular picture quality. Scene complexity and encoder quality also matter.

Choose a bitrate for the codec, resolution, and frame rate

First decide what resolution and frame rate the encoder will send. Then use the corresponding recommended bitrate for the codec. The table shows YouTube’s recommended ingest bitrates in Mbps; it distinguishes AV1/H.265 from H.264 because their recommendations differ.

Output mode AV1 / H.265 recommended H.264 recommended
2160p60 35 Mbps 50 Mbps
2160p30 30 Mbps 42 Mbps
1440p60 24 Mbps 34 Mbps
1440p30 15 Mbps 21 Mbps
1080p60 12 Mbps 17 Mbps
1080p30 10 Mbps 14 Mbps
720p60 6 Mbps 8 Mbps
720p30 6 Mbps 8 Mbps
480p30 3 Mbps 4 Mbps
360p30 3 Mbps 4 Mbps

For example, an H.264 stream at 1080p30 calls for 14 Mbps recommended, while an AV1 or H.265 stream at the same output mode calls for 10 Mbps. At 1080p60, the recommendations are 17 Mbps for H.264 and 12 Mbps for AV1 or H.265. Do not apply a value from the wrong codec column.

Minimums are not the usual target

YouTube also publishes minimum bitrate figures for lower-resolution modes. For H.264, the listed minimums are 6 Mbps at 1080p60, 5 Mbps at 1080p30, 3 Mbps at 720p60 or 720p30, and 0.4 Mbps at 480p30 or 360p30. For AV1/H.265, they are 4 Mbps at 1080p60 and 1080p30, 2 Mbps at 720p60 or 720p30, and 0.3 Mbps at 480p30 or 360p30. Higher resolutions have separate minimum values in YouTube’s full table. Treat a minimum as a lower bound, not the normal target when your connection can sustain the recommended rate.

The full current table and encoder notes are on YouTube’s encoder settings Help page.

Set the keyframe interval to 2 seconds

A keyframe interval is a duration, not a fixed frame count. YouTube recommends a keyframe every 2 seconds and says not to exceed 4 seconds. Convert the interval to frames using the output frame rate if your encoder asks for a number of frames:

Configure the encoder and YouTube stream

  1. Choose the output mode in your encoder. Set the resolution and frame rate you intend to send. In YouTube Live Control Room, YouTube says the encoder needs resolution, frame rate, and bitrate specified; it detects the other encoder settings. Manual resolution selection is available when using a custom stream key with manual settings enabled.
  2. Select a supported codec and bitrate. YouTube lists H.264, H.265 (HEVC), and AV1, with frame rates up to 60 fps. Choose the matching recommended bitrate from the table above. For HDR, YouTube recommends H.265 over RTMP(S); AV1 is not supported for HDR in the cited guidance. YouTube lists 10-bit depth for HDR and 8-bit for SDR.
  3. Set rate control to CBR. Use a constant bitrate, then set the keyframe interval to 2 seconds—or the equivalent frame count for your frame rate.
  4. Choose RTMPS if your encoder offers it. YouTube describes RTMPS as the secure extension to RTMP and recommends it.
  5. Create or schedule the stream in YouTube Studio Live Control Room. Copy the stream URL and stream key into the matching fields in your encoder. A stream key grants access to your broadcast, so handle it like a password and reset it if it is exposed. Custom keys and reused stream settings can simplify recurring streams.
  6. Set encoder start/stop behavior in YouTube when appropriate. YouTube’s stream settings include Auto-start and Auto-stop controls, which allow a stream to be started or stopped from the encoder. These YouTube controls do not establish that every third-party encoder can schedule itself, wake a computer, or recover from every failure; confirm those functions in the encoder’s own documentation and test them.
  7. Rehearse the actual stream. Send representative motion and audio, confirm that the preview appears, and watch stream health and messages while live. For unattended use, test a restart and any intended failover before relying on them.

See YouTube’s guide to managing live streams for stream keys and stream controls, and its encoder setup instructions for the current ingest settings.

Check upload bandwidth and leave headroom

Compare the stream’s bitrate with measured outbound capacity, not download speed. YouTube recommends 20% headroom and notes that network sharing can reduce the bandwidth available to the encoder. If the stream is 10 Mbps, for instance, apply the 20% headroom guidance to the measured upload capacity you need available for that stream; also account for other devices and traffic. If sending a primary and backup output, budget for both rates.

  1. Run an upload-speed test on the same connection and, if possible, the same network path the encoder will use. YouTube Help says, “We recommend running a speed test to test your upload bitrate.”
  2. Check whether other devices or applications use the connection during the planned broadcast.
  3. Compare sustained upload results—not just a brief peak—with the stream bitrate plus headroom.
  4. Run a test broadcast and watch YouTube’s stream health. A speed test is useful, but it does not replace checking the real encoder feed.

YouTube’s network guidance is at YouTube Help. A wired connection may reduce local wireless variability when the encoder and network equipment support it, but it does not increase the upstream capacity supplied by your internet plan.

Automation details that need a separate check

YouTube’s Auto-start and Auto-stop controls handle starting or stopping a broadcast from an encoder. They are not a blanket guarantee of unattended operation. Confirm that the chosen encoder can meet the schedule, reconnect after a dropped connection, and restart after any relevant computer or application failure. YouTube’s documentation does not guarantee those behaviors for every encoder.

For 2160p (4K) streams, YouTube says the low-latency improvement option is unavailable; those streams use normal latency. Also remember that YouTube transcodes incoming streams for viewer delivery, so the bitrate you set is for the feed arriving at YouTube, not a promise that every viewer receives that same bitrate.

Troubleshoot common setup problems

  • The stream will not connect: verify that the encoder has the correct stream URL and current key, and that the chosen ingest protocol is supported. Reset the key if it may have been exposed.
  • YouTube reports an unstable or insufficient feed: measure upload rather than download capacity, reduce competing network use, and check that sustained outbound bandwidth covers the selected bitrate with headroom. If it does not, lower the output mode and use its matching bitrate recommendation.
  • The encoder rejects the keyframe value: check whether the field expects seconds or frames. At 30 fps, enter 60 frames for a 2-second interval; at 60 fps, enter 120.
  • The feed looks poor despite using a listed bitrate: confirm that you used the row for the actual resolution and frame rate and the column for the actual codec. The recommendations are ingest settings, not guaranteed visual outcomes; encoder quality and scene complexity affect the result.
  • A scheduled stream does not start or recover unattended: verify the encoder’s scheduling and reconnection capabilities independently of YouTube’s Auto-start/Auto-stop settings, then test the failure and recovery path in a rehearsal.
  • HDR setup is incompatible: check the encoder’s HDR codec and bit depth against YouTube’s guidance: H.265 is recommended for HDR over RTMP(S), AV1 is not supported for HDR on the cited page, and the listed bit depths are 10-bit for HDR and 8-bit for SDR.
