The option appears only when a compatible card is inserted, and its availability depends on the exact phone or tablet model.
Set the Camera app to save new photos and videos to the SD card
- Check your Galaxy model. Confirm it has a microSD slot and supports the card capacity you plan to use. Slot and capacity support vary by model.
- Insert the card. Use the device’s microSD slot or supported SIM tray, following the markings and instructions for your model.
- Open Camera settings. Launch Camera and tap the Settings gear.
- Choose the storage location. Tap Storage location, then select SD card.
- Check a new capture if needed. Take a test photo and look for it in Gallery or in the card view in My Files.
Samsung’s Korea support instructions for Android 11 and 12 show the longer route Apps > Camera > Settings > Storage location, with device/internal memory and SD card/external memory as choices. Menu labels and screens can differ by model, software version, and carrier; Samsung’s UK guide gives the common route above. If “Storage location” is missing
Samsung says the option is not shown when no SD card is inserted or when the device does not support SD cards. Reseat the card and check the specifications or manual for your exact model. Many newer Galaxy S and Z models lack a slot, but support varies across product families and individual models. Samsung Germany’s model compatibility guide notes that most Galaxy S models from the S21 generation onward omit microSD support.
If your phone has a slot but does not recognize the card, remove it, check that it is seated correctly, and reinstall it. Samsung also suggests testing the card in another device. Formatting may resolve some card issues, but it permanently erases the card, so copy any files you want to keep somewhere safe first. See Samsung’s troubleshooting guidance.

What this setting changes—and what it does not
Changing the Camera storage location sends new Camera captures to the card; it does not move photos or videos that are already stored in internal memory. Samsung documents separate ways to move existing items through Gallery or My Files in its SD card guide.
This is not a device-wide default for every file or app. Samsung UK states that it is not currently possible to set everything on a device to save to an SD card, although some apps provide their own storage option. Downloads and app data may therefore continue to use internal storage.

Choose a card that fits your Galaxy and your recording needs
Check the exact model’s card-slot support and maximum capacity before buying. Samsung’s published examples illustrate why a single limit cannot be applied to every Galaxy: its Germany guide lists up to 2 TB for the Galaxy Tab S11 and Galaxy A17/A26, and up to 1.5 TB for the Galaxy Tab S10. Those limits are specific to the named models; confirm the specifications for your regional device. Samsung UK says many supported devices can use up to 1 TB of expandable storage, but capacity remains model-dependent.
