Steam provides purchase history to track spending, but its documented account settings do not offer a general spending cap for an adult’s own account. The $5 “limited user spend” page is a threshold for unlocking certain community features—not a personal budget limit. Parents can use Steam Families purchase requests so a child asks an adult to pay for a shopping cart.
How to view your Steam purchase history
- Sign in to the Steam Client or the Steam Help site.
- Select your account name in the upper-right corner, then open Account Details.
- Select View purchase history.
- Open a transaction to review its details or, where appropriate, start a support or refund request.
To check an unfamiliar charge, Steam recommends comparing the transaction total in purchase history with the amount on your bank statement or invoice. They may differ because payment providers in some countries add processing fees, taxes, or currency-conversion charges; Steam says it does not control those fees. Check the transaction date and currency as well as the amount.

Can you set a spending limit on your own Steam account?
The official Steam account pages covered here do not document a general self-service setting that caps an adult’s spending per purchase or over a set period. The similarly named limited-user spend page tracks progress toward a threshold for certain community features; it does not let you choose a spending limit.
What the $5 threshold actually does
Steam says an account must spend at least $5 USD in the Steam Store to access certain community features. Qualifying examples include adding at least $5 USD equivalent to the Steam Wallet or buying Store games for that value. This is a feature-access threshold, not a budget control.

Steam’s policy excludes retail activation keys, free demos, promotional trials, and funds from items sold on the Market. A purchase that is pending or processing does not count until it completes successfully. For purchases in another currency, Steam calculates the equivalent using the daily exchange rate at the time of each purchase. A bank refund or payment dispute can reduce the qualifying spend; Steam says a refund to the Steam Wallet does not change access to those community features.
Use Steam Families to approve a child’s purchases
Steam Families lets a child ask an adult family member to pay for the child’s shopping cart. The adult can approve and pay using a mobile device or email, and approved games are added to the child’s account. This is a purchase-approval step, not a documented configurable maximum-dollar budget.

- Open Account Details and select Family Management.
- Create or manage a Steam Family and assign the relevant account the child role.
- Configure parental controls, including the purchase-request workflow and any store restrictions you want to use.
Steam Families also includes controls for game access and playtime, plus playtime reports for child accounts. The family can contain up to six members, according to Steam Support. Interface wording can change. Steam’s current Families guide describes the unified feature set that replaced Steam Family Sharing and Family View; Steam’s Family View help page notes that Family View has been replaced.
Use your Steam Wallet as a budgeting aid
Your current Wallet balance appears beside your profile name. To add funds, open Account Details and select +Add funds to your Steam Wallet. A fixed Wallet balance can help you keep track of money set aside for Steam, but Steam describes it as a payment balance—not an account-wide limit. Wallet funds cannot be transferred or gifted to another Steam account.

Steam offers digital gift cards. Its Wallet help page says physical retail Steam Gift Cards are being phased out, with retailers expected to run out of stock by the end of 2026. That availability information is time-sensitive.

- Sign in to Steam Help.
- Select Purchases, then choose the purchase.
- Identify the issue and select I’d like to request a refund.
Steam says you may still submit a request for consideration if a purchase falls outside the standard criteria, but approval is not guaranteed.
