To set the default social card image for a Shopify store in India, go to Online Store > Preferences in Shopify admin, find Social sharing image and SEO, choose Add image or Change image, select your file, and click Save. This image is a fallback—not necessarily the image shown for every shared page.
Shopify’s documented steps are platform-wide; its instructions do not describe a separate India-specific setting. Shopify also provides a Hindi-language version of its social image guidance.
Set the store’s social sharing image
- In Shopify admin, open Online Store > Preferences.
- Find Social sharing image and SEO.
- Click Add image if no image is set, or Change image to replace the current one.
- Select the image file and click Save.
Shopify calls this the social sharing image. The setting provides a store-level image for pages that do not have a featured image, such as the homepage or an About page. See Shopify’s instructions for choosing a social media image.
Understand which image Shopify uses for a shared link
The preference image is not a universal override. Shopify’s documented priority is theme code images first, then theme settings images, then the image in Online Store Preferences. In Shopify’s free themes, product pages, collection pages, and blog posts generally use the featured image for that page; the store-level image is a fallback for pages without one.

Shopify’s Liquid page_image documentation describes the same distinction: product, collection, and blog-post featured images can supply the page image, while other pages or pages without a featured image use the social sharing image. If a theme does not include Open Graph image tags, Shopify can generate og:image, og:image:secure_url, og:image:width, and og:image:height tags from page_image. Theme behavior matters, especially for customized or third-party themes. Shopify’s theme requirements call for Open Graph and Twitter card tags. If the shared image does not match the preference, check the page’s featured image and the metadata emitted by the theme.

Choose an image that suits the store
Use an image that clearly represents the store and remains legible when displayed as a small link preview. The reviewed Shopify instructions do not establish a current recommended image dimension, so do not rely on an unsupported “ideal size” figure. Check the image in the social platform where you plan to share the link.
Fix an unexpected or stale preview
A product or collection image appears instead
This can be expected: the page’s featured image may take precedence over the store fallback. Check the featured image for that product or collection before changing the store-level setting.

The social sharing image setting looks blank
Shopify says the image may instead be set in theme settings, such as a checkout logo or a Social media/Social sharing image control in the theme editor. Review the theme editor’s relevant image controls.
The uploaded image does not show on the storefront
Some themes only display images uploaded through theme settings. Check those settings as well as Online Store Preferences, then inspect the page’s metadata if the theme is customized.

The old image still appears after you changed it
A social platform may have cached information for the URL. Shopify advises using the Facebook Sharing Debugger to refresh saved page-link information. Shopify’s help article also names the Twitter Card Validator and LinkedIn Post Inspector as preview options; check whether those tools remain available before relying on them.
A search result still shows an old image
That is separate from social-platform preview caching. Shopify advises resubmitting your sitemap after updating the image in admin.
