There is no universal YouTube setting for a “fallback video.” The steps depend on what should trigger it: an empty slot in a programme calendar, or a stream going off air because no encoder is connected. For a calendar gap, playout.video documents a setting in Calendar → Settings. For off-air playback, MediaCP documents a looping fallback video but does not publish a dashboard click path on its feature page. StreamNeo documents cloud looping and automatic reconnection, not a separate fallback-video control.
First decide what “fallback” should cover
Before changing settings, identify the failure or gap you want to handle. A calendar-gap fallback fills time when no programme block is scheduled. An off-air fallback plays when the live source is absent. Those are different triggers, and a setting for one does not establish protection against the other.
- Unscheduled calendar gap: use a service that supports default content between scheduled blocks.
- No encoder or active broadcast: use a service that explicitly supports off-air fallback playback.
- Dropped connection: check whether the service reconnects the stream. Automatic reconnection is not necessarily a rule to play different standby media.
Confirm the trigger in the current documentation for your chosen service; labels and menus can change.
Set a calendar-gap fallback in playout.video
playout.video documents a calendar workflow for filling gaps between scheduled programme blocks. Its fallback setting should not be treated as an encoder-failure backup: the documented trigger is an empty calendar interval. The vendor’s setup guidance is at playout.video.

- Create a Scheduled Stream.
- Add the video, playlist, or composition blocks you want to schedule, and set the recurrence needed for your programme.
- Open the calendar’s Settings.
- Choose the fallback for gaps: a default playlist, one standby video, or a black slate.
- Open Destinations, add YouTube, and select Go Live.
The playout.video help page says edits made while the stream is live take effect at the next slot transition. If you change a fallback during a programme block, do not assume it replaces the current content immediately.
Test a calendar-gap fallback
- Use an unlisted or private test destination, or a maintenance window if appropriate.
- Leave a deliberate gap between scheduled blocks.
- Watch the YouTube viewer-facing page to confirm the selected playlist, video, or slate appears during the gap.
- Confirm that the next scheduled programme takes over as expected.
Configure off-air fallback in MediaCP
MediaCP describes a fallback video that loops when no encoder is connected and there is no scheduled content or live broadcast. It says the loop continues until the broadcast resumes. Its public feature description, MediaCP, does not provide a step-by-step dashboard path, so use the current MediaCP dashboard or help documentation to locate the control rather than relying on guessed menu names.

MediaCP describes this fallback as a branded waiting experience, such as a welcome slate, event information, or sponsor message. It distinguishes that from a second live backup feed: a looping standby video is not itself a second encoder or backup live broadcast.
Test the off-air trigger and recovery
- Set the fallback video using the current MediaCP instructions for your installation.
- Test on an unlisted or private destination, or during a planned maintenance window.
- Make the live source absent by disconnecting the encoder, if safe to do so.
- Check the YouTube page to verify that the fallback appears, then reconnect the live source and verify that the main programme resumes.
Choose video and audio you have rights to use. A streaming service’s fallback feature does not grant permission to use footage, music, or sponsor material.

Keep YouTube settings separate from fallback media
YouTube encoder settings such as auto-start and auto-stop control broadcast behavior; they do not choose which standby video a third-party service plays. Configure the service’s fallback trigger and YouTube’s broadcast settings as separate parts of the setup. After testing in the service dashboard, verify the result on the actual YouTube watch page as well.

Compare services by the trigger they explicitly support, the standby media they accept, how the main programme resumes, and whether current setup instructions are available. A calendar-gap setting, an off-air loop, and reconnecting a dropped stream solve related but distinct problems. Test the exact trigger and handoff you need before relying on it for a continuous channel.
