Set the sound from the settings for each individual doorbell: use Google Home for newer Nest doorbells, or the Nest app for supported legacy models. Google documents sound settings on individual devices, but does not explicitly guarantee that different sounds can be assigned simultaneously to multiple doorbells in one home.
Choose the app that supports your doorbell
Newer Nest camera and doorbell models are managed in the Google Home app; Google says they are not compatible with the Nest app. Supported legacy Nest doorbells may still offer their theme setting in the Nest app. If you cannot find the control, first confirm which app supports your model. Google’s camera and doorbell settings guide explains the settings and app compatibility.
Change the sound for each doorbell
- In Google Home, select one doorbell. Open that device’s settings, then look under Doorbell settings for a theme or chime sound. Google’s guide says a different chime sound can be chosen in doorbell settings. Exact labels may vary by model or app version. Google Home Help
- Choose an available sound and save or confirm the selection if the app prompts you.
- Repeat for each doorbell. Make the change from the settings for each device. This is a device-by-device approach based on Google’s individual device controls; Google’s documentation does not explicitly confirm that distinct simultaneous assignments are supported for every multi-doorbell setup.
- For a supported legacy doorbell in the Nest app, open the doorbell’s settings and look for Doorbell themes. If that setting is absent, check model compatibility rather than assuming every Nest doorbell has the same controls.
Know which sound setting you need
A doorbell theme or ringtone changes the sound played at the doorbell. If you use visitor announcements on a Google Nest or Home speaker or display, Google says the selected seasonal sound also plays through that announcement feature. Those announcements require a compatible speaker or display and must be enabled. Google Home Help
The indoor chime and digital-chime controls do different jobs. The indoor chime setting controls whether the existing indoor chime rings; Quiet Time temporarily mutes that chime and visitor announcements, though the app may still send a notification. Digital chime duration changes how long a digital chime plays, not which doorbell theme is selected. Google documents that duration control for digital chimes on Nest doorbells wired to the home doorbell system; battery-powered doorbells cannot use a digital chime. Google’s audio settings guide

- Check whether it is seasonal. Seasonal themes are offered around some holidays. After the holiday, the theme disappears from the app and the doorbell returns to its default tone. Google Home Help
- Confirm you are changing the right control. A theme changes the doorbell sound; indoor-chime controls and digital-chime duration govern other parts of the sound experience. Google’s audio settings guide
What to expect from Nest ringtones
Google Nest Audio UX Designer Benjamin Decker wrote in 2022 that the team’s design rule was to keep ringtones to no more than 10 seconds, so visitors would not wait impatiently. That describes a design guideline, not a guarantee about every current ringtone or a complete list of sounds available in the app. Google Nest’s account of its ringtone design process
