Set a Google Play budget to track monthly spending and get a warning when you approach or exceed your chosen amount. It is not a spending cap: Play will still allow purchases above it. To add a confirmation step, turn on purchase verification; for a child’s eligible purchases, use family purchase approvals or Family Link. These controls apply to purchases billed through Google Play, not necessarily payments processed by an app developer.
Set or change your Google Play budget
On an Android phone or tablet, the budget setting is in the Play Store app. It uses the currency for the account’s current Google Play country profile.

- Open the Google Play Store app and tap your profile picture.
- Tap Payments & subscriptions → Budget & history.
- Tap Set budget, enter an amount, and tap Save.
The same Budget & history screen shows spending so far in the current month. If spending is close to or above the budget, Play displays a message when the account buys an item. To change the amount, return to that screen, tap Edit budget, update it, and save. Choose Remove budget to delete it. Google says budget history is stored in the Google Account and removed after one year. See Google Play Help: Set a budget for your Google Play expenses.
A budget warns; it does not block purchases
Google describes budgets as a way to monitor expenses and receive alerts; exceeding the amount does not prohibit transactions. If you need a purchase to require an extra step, pair the budget with purchase verification or, for a child’s eligible purchases, an approval setting.

Require verification before purchases
Purchase verification can prompt for a supported check before an eligible purchase. On Android, open the Play Store and go to Profile → Payments & subscriptions → Purchase verification. Depending on your region, device, and account, the next setting may be called Verification requirement or Verification frequency. Select and confirm the option that requires verification for every eligible purchase, if it is available.
Google’s help describes options including Always, Every 30 minutes on mobile, and Never; available choices can vary by region. Verification methods may include a Google Account password, biometrics, the screen lock on eligible devices, or a Google prompt. Follow the labels shown on your device. Check every device and account you use
Verification settings and their effects can differ across devices and Google Accounts. Google notes that biometrics and screen lock may apply to every Google Account on the device, while a Google Account password applies to its associated account. Review the setting on each device and account used for Play purchases. On a shared device, consider who can satisfy its biometric or screen-lock check.
Require approval for a child’s purchases
A family manager can choose purchase approval requirements for family members in Google Play. A parent can also manage approvals in Family Link for a child account managed there. The categories and labels offered can differ by route, so use the options shown on your device.

From the Play Store
- Tap Profile → Settings → Family → Manage family members.
- Select the family member, then tap Purchase approvals.
- Choose the approval requirements available for that member.
From Family Link
- Open the child’s profile.
- Tap Controls → Google Play → Purchases & download approvals.
- Tap Require approval for and choose from the categories shown.
Google says completed purchases made through Google Play billing generate an email receipt for the family manager. Keep Family Link and Play Store notifications enabled if you rely on approval requests: Google warns that disabling those notifications can prevent request alerts. Budgets, purchase verification, and family approvals address different needs. None should be treated as a universal block on payments made inside every app.

Alternative billing can fall outside Play controls
In some countries, developers may offer an alternative billing system. Google says its authentication and purchase-control settings apply only to Google Play billing. When a developer processes a payment through an alternative system, the developer handles payment processing and support, and the transaction may not appear in Play order history. A family payment method is not a universal limit
A family payment method does not cover every transaction; Google lists subscriptions among the purchases for which it is unavailable. It also does not change the scope of purchase approvals, which apply to purchases made through Google Play billing. See Use a family payment method on Google Play.
