For a normal API request, use an HTTP client such as curl. If the request must run in a browser context, start Headless Chrome with remote debugging and use a DevTools Protocol client to intercept and continue a request with a POST method, body, and headers.
Choose between an HTTP client and Headless Chrome
Use curl or another HTTP client when you only need to send a URL, method, headers, and body. Use Headless Chrome when the request depends on browser behavior—such as a page’s JavaScript, browser cookies, or other page state. Chrome’s Headless CLI is primarily for browser launch and output capture, not arbitrary HTTP requests.
The Headless command-line reference documents options such as --dump-dom, --screenshot, and --print-to-pdf; these do not turn a URL argument into a POST request. --dump-dom returns a DOM after Chrome parses the page and runs scripts, which is different from retrieving raw HTML with curl. See the Chrome Headless command-line reference.
Send a conventional POST directly
For an API call that does not need browser execution, a direct request is simpler:

curl -X POST "https://api.example.com/items"
-H "Content-Type: application/json"
-d '{"name":"example"}'
Replace the example endpoint and body with the API’s actual values. This sends an HTTP POST; it does not launch Chrome or execute page JavaScript.
Use Headless Chrome when browser context is required
Launch Chrome with remote debugging enabled, then connect a DevTools Protocol client to its browser or page target. Chromium documents this control path for Headless Chrome in its Headless Chromium README.
chrome --headless --remote-debugging-port=9222 https://chromium.org/
This command starts a Headless browser target and opens a page. The URL argument is a navigation; it does not send a POST body. The browser must remain running while your protocol client connects and issues commands.

What the protocol client does
The DevTools Protocol Fetch domain can pause a matching request and continue it with an overridden method, POST data, or headers. A client must connect to the appropriate Chrome target, enable request interception, respond to each paused request, and manage the request lifecycle. The protocol does not define a universal shell-only command that performs this work without a client.
The following is the protocol-level shape, not a complete standalone command. Exact message framing and connection code depend on the DevTools Protocol client you choose:
// 1. Enable Fetch interception for a matching URL pattern.
Fetch.enable({
patterns: [{ urlPattern: "https://api.example.com/items", requestStage: "Request" }]
});
// 2. When the matching request pauses, continue it with overrides.
Fetch.continueRequest({
requestId: pausedRequestId,
method: "POST",
postData: btoa('{"name":"example"}'),
headers: [
{ name: "Content-Type", value: "application/json" }
]
});
Fetch.continueRequest accepts optional method, postData, and headers overrides. In a real implementation, encode the POST data as required by the client and protocol version you use. A paused request must be handled: the client can continue it, fail it, or fulfill it with a response. Leaving it paused prevents it from proceeding.

For the exact command fields and current definitions, consult the Fetch domain schema. The Network domain schema describes network request details such as HTTP method, headers, and POST data.
Understand interception, redirects, and browser behavior
Request-stage versus response-stage interception
Request-stage interception pauses a request before it is sent, which is where method, body, or request-header overrides belong. Response-stage interception occurs after the response arrives and before its body is received; it is for handling the response, not changing a request that has already gone out.
Redirects may need fresh handling
A redirect can create a new request. Header overrides do not automatically apply to later redirect hops, so the client may need to match and handle each new paused request. Do not assume that an override for the first URL carries through a redirect chain.

Use the protocol supported by the installed Chrome
DevTools Protocol schemas evolve. The running Chrome instance exposes its supported protocol at http://localhost:9222/json/protocol when remote debugging is enabled. Check that schema when compatibility matters rather than assuming a command or field supported by another Chrome release is identical.
Headless Chrome version notes
Current Headless mode is unified with regular Chrome. Chrome for Developers says the former separate Headless implementation is available only as chrome-headless-shell beginning with Chrome 132.0.6793.0. The Chrome Headless mode overview covers the unified mode and old-shell transition. Confirm the binary you are running if a script depends on legacy Headless behavior.
The Chrome command-line reference notes that --allow-chrome-scheme-url has been available since Chrome 123, but that flag is unrelated to sending POST requests. CLI options and protocol behavior can change; check the installed browser’s documentation and protocol schema for version-specific details.

Troubleshoot common problems
- The command opens a page but the server receives no POST: a URL passed to Chrome is a navigation, not a POST instruction. Use an HTTP client or implement the request through a DevTools Protocol client.
- Chrome starts but the protocol client cannot connect: confirm that Chrome was launched with
--remote-debugging-port=9222, that the process is still running, and that the client is connecting to the correct browser or page target. - The page hangs after interception starts: every matching paused request needs a response from the client, such as
continueRequest,failRequest, orfulfillRequest. Verify the event handler is receiving and resolving paused requests. - The server gets the wrong body or rejects its format: check the protocol client’s required representation for
postData, the actual bytes being sent, and the matchingContent-Typeheader. The Fetch schema documents the available override fields. - Headers disappear after a redirect: the redirected request is a new hop. Match and apply needed overrides to that request as well.
- A protocol command or parameter is rejected: compare it with the schema exposed by the Chrome instance at
http://localhost:9222/json/protocol; client and browser protocol versions may differ.

If your goal is to capture a web page rather than send an arbitrary API POST, ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server for developers. One GET request with a URL returns a PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF, without requiring you to launch and control Chrome yourself.
For example, using cURL:
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for request options. ScreenshotNeo accepts cookie or consent banners and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture; each step can be turned off. Bot checks, blank pages, failed loads, timeouts, and cache hits are not billed, and responses identify the page verdict and billing status in headers. Its MCP server provides take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf for Claude, Cursor, and other MCP clients. The free plan includes 1,000 screenshots per month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 screenshots.

Frequently asked questions
Does --dump-dom send a POST request?
No. It outputs the parsed page DOM after scripts run; it is not an HTTP method or request-body option.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsCan Headless Chrome make requests initiated by page JavaScript?
Yes. A page can initiate browser network requests through its own behavior. To issue or modify an arbitrary request under protocol control, use a DevTools Protocol client; launching Chrome with a URL alone does not specify a POST.
Is Chrome’s old Headless implementation the same as current Headless mode?
No. The Chrome Headless overview distinguishes unified Headless mode from the former implementation, which is available as chrome-headless-shell starting with Chrome 132.0.6793.0.
