To send a coupon automatically to former customers, use a WooCommerce extension or automation workflow: set an inactivity trigger, choose or generate a coupon, write the email, and test the flow. WooCommerce’s built-in coupons define discounts but do not send win-back emails by themselves.
What WooCommerce coupons do—and do not do
WooCommerce core supports three coupon types: fixed-cart discounts, fixed-product discounts, and percentage discounts. Customers generally enter a coupon code in the cart or at checkout. Core does not automatically email a code or apply one to a customer’s order; see WooCommerce’s Managing Coupons documentation.
For a win-back campaign, an extension or automation must identify a previous customer who has not returned, then send a message containing an offer. This differs from abandoned-cart recovery, which targets a shopper who left a cart without completing checkout. Cart-recovery extensions may also include coupons, but they use a different trigger.
Choose an inactivity trigger and coupon approach
Pick the delay according to your store’s normal repurchase cycle. The available documentation does not establish an ideal number of days, so use your own buying patterns rather than treating a preset interval as universally effective.

- Existing shared coupon: Select a coupon already configured in WooCommerce. Multiple recipients may receive the same code, subject to the coupon’s restrictions.
- Generated coupon: Have the extension create a code for the recipient. The Coupon Email System documentation describes restricting generated coupons to the recipient’s email address.
Before connecting either option to an email, check its discount type and value, validity dates, usage limits, and any product or customer restrictions. A discount is an incentive, not a guarantee that an inactive customer will return.
Set up an automated win-back email with Coupon Email System
The extension’s documented workflow uses a “Days After Last Purchase” trigger. Its scheduled daily check considers Processing and Completed orders, identifies the latest order associated with each customer email, and skips customers whose latest order is newer than the configured threshold. It also tracks whether the win-back email has already been sent.

- In your WordPress dashboard, open the WooCommerce settings for Coupon Email System.
- Enable the system and select the “Days After Last Purchase” trigger.
- Enter the number of days a customer must go without a purchase before the email is eligible to send.
- Choose an existing coupon or configure automatic coupon generation. For generated coupons, review the recipient-email restriction described in the extension documentation.
- Edit the email subject, message, and template. State the offer’s expiry date and conditions clearly, and include any required promotional-email information.
- Save the settings and use the extension’s test-email action. Check that the message renders correctly and that its coupon can be redeemed under the intended conditions.
- Before activating the live flow, confirm which customers and order statuses qualify, then monitor that the expected messages are sent.
The precise settings layout can change between extension versions, so follow the labels in the current installation if they differ from the documented wording.
Consider re-engagement coupons if you want to review recipients
Re-engagement Coupons for WooCommerce is another documented option for identifying past purchasers who have not purchased recently. Its follow-up coupon emails can be sent automatically or manually after review. That gives a store a documented review step when it does not want every eligible customer to receive an offer without oversight.

These two extensions should not be assumed to have identical settings. Compare their current documentation and compatibility information before choosing: the Coupon Email System describes a days-after-last-purchase trigger and generated coupons with recipient-email restriction, while Re-engagement Coupons documents automatic or manual follow-up emails to inactive past purchasers.

- Use a test message to verify the subject, body, template, links, and coupon details.
- Confirm that the coupon’s validity and usage rules match what the email promises.
- Check that the intended customer group is eligible, including how the extension treats order status and the customer email used to find the latest purchase.
- The extension documentation describes unsubscribe links for promotional coupon emails. An unsubscribe feature does not by itself establish compliance with every applicable email-marketing or privacy requirement; check the rules that apply to your recipients and business.
Neither extension’s documented features establish an optimal inactivity window, discount amount, delivery rate, or sales uplift. Choose timing and offer terms based on your store’s needs, and evaluate results from your own campaign rather than assuming a particular conversion outcome.
