You can send cryptocurrency across borders, but a transfer only works as a remittance if the recipient can securely access, spend, or convert it into money they can use. Before sending, confirm the recipient can receive the exact asset on the exact network, calculate the amount they will actually be able to use, and verify the destination independently. Crypto payments typically are not reversible, so do not send under pressure or assume a fast network confirmation means the recipient has spendable local currency.

Before you send: confirm the recipient can use the crypto

Ask the recipient how they will receive and use the specific asset on the specific network. Establish whether they can hold it securely, exchange it, withdraw it, or spend it where they live. If your goal is local currency, agree on how they will convert the crypto and access the proceeds before you transfer anything. Availability and cash-out options depend on the recipient’s location and circumstances; do not assume a token or network is usable everywhere.

Confirm the recipient’s identity and wallet address through a trusted, separate channel, such as a conversation you initiate using contact details you already know. Check the asset and network as well as the address. A transfer sent to the wrong destination may not be recoverable. The FTC warns that cryptocurrency payments typically are not reversible, and a wrong address, compromised wallet, lost password, or failed exchange can leave the sender without a practical recovery route: FTC guidance on cryptocurrency and scams.

Compare the usable amount, total cost, and arrival time

Do not compare routes by a headline network fee or a “zero fee” claim. Work out what the recipient can actually use after all sender-side and recipient-side costs, and when that money will be available. CFPB guidance identifies fees, taxes, exchange rates, and the expected amount delivered as important disclosures for covered U.S. remittances. A transfer advertised as free may still involve an exchange-rate spread, conversion charge, or digital-wallet withdrawal cost. Its 2024 circular also warns that speed claims can mislead if funds are not available to the recipient when advertised: CFPB Circular 2024-02.

Compare What to establish
Amount received The net amount the recipient can use after conversion, intermediary charges, and cash-out costs.
Total sender cost Any purchase or funding charge, transfer or network fee, exchange-rate spread, tax, and other disclosed cost.
Availability time When the recipient can actually access or use the funds, not just the advertised processing or blockchain-confirmation time.
Recipient access Whether the recipient can securely hold, exchange, withdraw, or spend the chosen asset in their location.
Reversibility and support What the provider can do after an incorrect address, unauthorized access, delay, or platform failure. Crypto payments typically are not reversible, according to the FTC.
Applicable protections Whether a conventional provider and transfer qualify for federal remittance protections; coverage depends on the facts.

Compare actual routes for the same sender, recipient, amount, and payout goal. The CFPB says consumers may weigh speed, cost, convenience, security, reliability, and trust when choosing among remittance providers. A fast blockchain confirmation alone does not establish that the recipient has usable local currency.

Use this pre-send safety checklist

  1. Verify the person and destination. Confirm the recipient’s identity, wallet address, asset, and network through a separate trusted channel. Do not rely only on a message, payment request, or QR code that prompted the transfer.
  2. Confirm the payout plan. Have the recipient explain how they will hold, convert, withdraw, or spend that exact asset and network. If local currency is the goal, confirm the practical conversion and withdrawal steps first.
  3. Calculate the recipient’s net amount. Include your purchase or funding costs, transfer fees, any exchange-rate spread, recipient conversion charges, intermediary costs, taxes, and withdrawal charges that apply. Request current terms from the services involved rather than relying on a fee headline.
  4. Check when funds become usable. Establish both the expected transfer time and the time needed for any conversion or withdrawal. Do not treat network confirmation as proof that the recipient can spend the proceeds.
  5. Pause if someone is creating urgency. Do not send crypto because an unexpected caller or message says you must protect money, fix a government or utility issue, collect a prize, or meet an urgent demand. Verify claims independently using contact details from the organization’s official site.
  6. Keep access information private. Never give someone who contacts you your wallet password, private key, recovery phrase, or access code. A request for wallet access or codes is a fraud warning sign.
  7. Save the records. Keep transfer details and provider communications. If you use a conventional qualifying remittance provider, check its official terms and contact it promptly if there is a problem.

The CFPB and FTC describe pressure to act immediately, requests for cryptocurrency, and demands for wallet access or codes as scam signals. See the CFPB fraud guidance and the FTC cryptocurrency guidance.

Understand which U.S. protections may apply

For U.S. consumers, CFPB guidance says remittance rules generally protect qualifying transfers over $15 to a foreign person or business when the provider and transfer meet the relevant definitions. Required disclosures can include applicable fees and taxes, the exchange rate, certain third-party charges, and the amount expected to be delivered. Do not assume a crypto transaction automatically qualifies; whether the rules apply depends on the arrangement and the provider. Read the CFPB’s overview, “What is a remittance transfer and what are my rights?”

FinCEN’s March 18, 2013 interpretive guidance addresses a narrower federal question under Bank Secrecy Act regulations. It says a person who obtains virtual currency to buy goods or services is not a money services business under the described rules, while an administrator or exchanger that accepts and transmits convertible virtual currency or buys or sells it may be a money transmitter unless a limitation or exemption applies. The guidance is not a statement about all other statutes or regulations, and it is not a complete account of current state or foreign law: FinCEN’s virtual-currency guidance.

When a conventional remittance route may be easier to assess

If the recipient needs predictable local-currency payout, or cannot readily access the crypto you plan to send, compare conventional remittance providers for the same amount and destination. Check the recipient’s net payout, exchange rate, fees, delivery time, support, and whether the route qualifies for applicable protections. The CFPB’s guidance emphasizes that consumers can consider speed, cost, convenience, security, reliability, and trust; no single route is established as safest or cheapest for every country pair.
