To send a playlist of prerecorded videos to YouTube Live with GStreamer, build an application-managed pipeline that decodes each file, normalizes its audio and video, joins the items in order, encodes the result, muxes it into FLV, and sends it to YouTube using a compatible RTMP or RTMPS sink. GStreamer documents the building blocks, but not a complete arbitrary-playlist recipe; test your installed plugins and YouTube ingest connection with a private or unlisted stream before an event.

What you need to build

A video playlist is more than a source element pointed at several filenames. For ordinary, differently named video files, your application needs to control playback order and handle the streams that each file exposes. The overall flow is:

  1. Get the current ingest server URL and stream key from YouTube Live Control Room.
  2. Open each media URI with uridecodebin and select the intended video and audio streams.
  3. Convert and normalize formats as needed, then connect each item in order to a sequential switch such as concat.
  4. Encode continuous video and audio, mux them into FLV, and send the output through a compatible RTMP/RTMPS sink.
  5. Test the complete chain in Live Control Room before relying on it for a public event.

See the GStreamer uridecodebin documentation, concat documentation, and rtmpsink documentation for element behavior. These are building blocks, not a ready-made controller for every playlist and format combination.

Prepare YouTube Live Control Room

  1. In YouTube Studio, create a live stream or open the scheduled event you intend to use.
  2. Copy the server URL and stream key displayed for that stream. Use the current values from Live Control Room, not an endpoint copied from an old example.
  3. Keep the stream key out of source code shared publicly, screenshots, and public repositories. YouTube describes stream keys as the password and address for a stream in its live stream settings guidance.
  4. For a scheduled event, start the encoder and wait for its preview before selecting Go live, if the event requires that action.

YouTube says streams shorter than 12 hours are automatically archived. That does not replace checking the event and archive settings relevant to your channel. See Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder.

Build the playlist pipeline

Decode each media URI

Use uridecodebin, or a version-appropriate equivalent, to open each file as a URI and decode its available streams to raw media. Its source pads are created dynamically as streams are discovered, so an application must handle pad creation and link the intended audio and video streams. Decide how to handle files with no audio, multiple audio tracks, unsupported codecs, or decode errors.

Normalize formats before joining

Items may have different dimensions, frame rates, pixel formats, audio sample rates, or channel layouts. Convert and scale video and resample or convert audio so each input connected to the sequential switch has compatible caps. Decide on the final output resolution, frame rate, and audio layout before the event; otherwise a transition may fail or produce inconsistent output.

Sequence items with concat

The concat element joins compatible streams sequentially. It switches to the next requested sink pad when the active input reaches end-of-stream (EOS). Your application must request and link pads in playlist order and manage each item’s lifecycle. The documentation’s two-input example demonstrates the element’s behavior, but it does not resolve every edge case in a real mixed-format playlist.

Encode, mux, and send

Encode continuous video and audio using settings supported by the selected YouTube ingest protocol, then mux them into FLV for the documented RTMP sink path. The rtmpsink documentation shows an flvmux ! rtmpsink path and describes RTMP delivery through librtmp. Check that your local installation includes the required decoder, encoder, muxer, and sink plugins; gst-inspect-1.0 can inspect locally available elements.

The documentation does not guarantee that every packaged rtmpsink/librtmp build negotiates TLS with YouTube’s current RTMPS endpoint. If using RTMPS, verify that your installed build can connect securely to the endpoint supplied by Live Control Room. YouTube recommends RTMPS in its RTMPS guidance.

Choose YouTube-compatible output settings

YouTube’s encoder guidance lists RTMP/RTMPS ingest, H.264, H.265/HEVC, or AV1 video, up to 60 fps, and AAC or MP3 audio. It recommends constant bitrate (CBR), a two-second keyframe interval, and no more than four seconds between keyframes. Select the bitrate from YouTube’s table for your chosen resolution, frame rate, and codec rather than treating one bitrate as universal. Check the current encoder settings, bitrate, and resolution guidance when choosing the profile.

  • Resolution and frame rate: Match the output to your source material and intended stream quality; use a supported frame rate no higher than 60 fps.
  • Video and audio codecs: Choose a listed video codec and AAC or MP3 audio for the ingest path you plan to use.
  • Rate control and keyframes: Use CBR, target a two-second keyframe interval, and keep the interval at or below four seconds.
  • Network capacity: YouTube recommends upload capacity with 20% headroom above the total stream bitrate. See YouTube streaming tips.

Run a private test before the event

  1. Create a private or unlisted test stream and configure the pipeline with its current server URL and stream key.
  2. Start the GStreamer application and confirm that Live Control Room receives a preview.
  3. Check picture, sound, and transitions between every playlist item, including files with differing formats or audio tracks.
  4. Confirm the stream health indicator is acceptable and that your available upload bandwidth has the recommended headroom.
  5. Test the final playlist item and verify whether your application stops or deliberately restarts the sequence.
  6. Only after the whole path is verified should you use it for the intended event. Reset the stream key if it is exposed.

When multifilesrc is appropriate

multifilesrc reads a sequentially named file pattern, such as img.%04d.png. GStreamer documents it with numbered images combined into a video stream and includes a loop setting. It is not documented as a general reader for unrelated MP4 or MKV filenames. Use it when your inputs actually fit its numbered-sequence model and compatible buffer expectations; use URI decoding and application-level sequencing for a playlist of ordinary heterogeneous videos. See the multifilesrc documentation.

RTMP/RTMPS or HLS?

For a continuous RTMP/RTMPS feed, use the endpoint provided by Live Control Room and verify that your local sink supports the required transport. YouTube also accepts HLS ingest, but that is a segmented workflow, not an automatic fallback for a failed RTMP connection.

YouTube’s HLS setup requires HTTPS POST/PUT requests, TS segments lasting 1–4 seconds, and a rolling playlist with no more than five outstanding segments. YouTube notes that HLS has higher latency because it sends segments rather than a continuous stream. The GStreamer material cited here does not establish a complete GStreamer-to-YouTube HLS recipe; confirm the relevant local elements and endpoint behavior before choosing it. See YouTube’s HLS setup guidance.

Troubleshoot common failures

Symptom Likely cause What to check
No preview in Live Control Room Wrong or stale server URL or key, missing sink/encoder plugin, or an ingest connection failure. Copy the current URL and key from the event; inspect locally installed elements with gst-inspect-1.0; check the application and sink logs.
RTMPS connection fails The installed librtmp-backed sink may not negotiate TLS with the current YouTube endpoint. Verify TLS support for the local build and test against the endpoint supplied in Live Control Room before the event.
Pipeline stops at an item boundary Dynamic pads were not linked, the next item’s caps are incompatible, or EOS handling did not queue the following item. Inspect pad/link handling, normalize media formats, and test transitions across all playlist items.
Picture works but audio is missing or breaks A file has no selected audio stream or its audio format/layout differs from what the joined stream expects. Handle absent audio deliberately and normalize sample rate and channel layout before concatenation.
Stream health degrades or playback buffers Available upload capacity may be insufficient for the total bitrate, including network variation. Check the selected bitrate against YouTube’s table and allow the recommended 20% upload headroom.
Playlist does not repeat concat advances through queued inputs; it does not by itself implement an application’s repeat policy. Have the controller reopen and queue the playlist after the final item if looping is required.
