If you have no cell service but can connect to Wi-Fi, send a message through an internet messaging app. If Wi-Fi is also unavailable, ordinary SMS will not send over a dead cellular connection; a supported iPhone may be able to send Messages via satellite in certain countries. Satellite messaging is slower and has important limits, and Apple says not to use it for emergencies.
Choose the option that matches your connection

If Wi-Fi is available, use an internet messaging app
Connect to a Wi-Fi network with internet access, then send a message using an app that works over the internet. This does not require cellular bars, but it does require the Wi-Fi connection to reach the internet; connecting to a router with no internet access is not enough.

Carrier Wi-Fi calling or texting is a separate option. It depends on both your phone and carrier, and charges may apply. Google advises checking with your carrier for support and possible fees: Make calls over Wi-Fi. Ask specifically whether your carrier supports texting over Wi-Fi on your device, and enable the feature before you lose coverage.
Why ordinary SMS cannot send without a connection
SMS and MMS use carrier messaging support; an internet messaging app sends over data instead. If your phone has neither cellular connectivity nor Wi-Fi internet, opening its default messaging app does not create a route for an ordinary text to travel. Google’s troubleshooting guidance recommends checking signal, carrier support for SMS, MMS, or RCS, and plan balance when messages fail: Fix problems sending, receiving, or connecting to Google Messages.

If you have a supported iPhone and no Wi-Fi or cellular service
Check eligibility before you leave coverage
Apple documents Messages via satellite for iPhone 14 or later in the United States, Canada, Mexico, and Japan. The minimum software version depends on country: iOS 18 or later in the United States, Canada, and Japan, and iOS 18.4 or later in Mexico. An active SIM is required. SMS via satellite also depends on carrier support; having a compatible iPhone alone does not guarantee that SMS will work. Prepare, connect, and send
- Before going off-grid, turn on iMessage and confirm that your SIM is active.
- When both cellular service and Wi-Fi are unavailable, follow the satellite prompt in Messages.
- Go outside and follow the iPhone’s positioning instructions. You need an unobstructed view of the sky and horizon; heavy foliage or other obstructions may prevent a connection.
- Send a text-only message and allow extra time for delivery. Apple’s instructions are at Send a text message via satellite on iPhone.
Expect delays and limited message types
Apple estimates that a message may take about 30 seconds to send in ideal, clear-sky conditions; light or medium foliage may extend that to more than a minute. Photos, videos, audio messages, stickers, and group messages are not supported in this satellite mode. SMS availability and any fees depend on your carrier.

If you have a Pixel phone, distinguish emergency satellite service from texting
Google documents Satellite SOS for emergencies on Pixel 9, Pixel 9 Pro, Pixel 9 Pro XL, and Pixel 9 Pro Fold in the United States, excluding Hawaii and Alaska. It is for contacting emergency services, not for sending ordinary personal texts to friends or family. See Google Pixel Help: Get help in an emergency using your Pixel phone. Do not use ordinary Messages via satellite as your emergency pathway. Apple states, “Messages via satellite shouldn’t be used in emergencies.” Use Emergency SOS via satellite on a supported iPhone, or the emergency satellite service available on a supported Pixel in an eligible location. Feature availability depends on the phone and where you are.
