To relay a Shoutcast station to YouTube Live, run FFmpeg on a computer or server that can reach the station: FFmpeg reads the station’s stream URL and publishes to the ingest URL and stream key for your YouTube Live event. The exact command depends on the station’s URL, authentication and audio codec, as well as the YouTube event’s ingest settings, so there is no safe one-size-fits-all command.

What you need before you start

  • A Shoutcast-compatible stream URL supplied by the station operator. It may include a mount or path and may require authentication.
  • FFmpeg installed on a computer or server that can reach the stream over the network. It must remain running for the relay to continue.
  • A YouTube Live event, with its ingest URL and stream key available in YouTube Live Control Room.
  • A way to inspect the source stream and test the incoming feed in YouTube’s Live Control Room preview before starting the broadcast.

This is a relay, not a way to make a station’s audio originate from YouTube: FFmpeg receives the station’s network stream and sends it to YouTube. The station and YouTube event are separate endpoints, and either can have settings that affect the result.

1. Find and inspect the Shoutcast stream URL

Use the actual stream URL provided by the station operator, rather than assuming that a website’s home page or a guessed URL path is the audio endpoint. SHOUTcast/ICY metadata requests are supported by FFmpeg, but support for the protocol does not ensure that a particular station exposes useful metadata or follows a particular URL pattern.

Check whether the operator supplied credentials, a non-default path, or other connection details. Keep credentials private. Before configuring YouTube, confirm that the URL is reachable from the machine that will run FFmpeg and inspect what streams and codecs it exposes using your local FFmpeg build or a probe command. Do not infer compatibility from the station’s name, player, or file extension.

2. Create a YouTube Live event and get its ingest details

  1. Open YouTube Live Control Room and create or configure the live event you intend to use.
  2. Choose the event’s ingest protocol and copy the ingest URL and stream key shown for that event. Use the details for the specific event; do not substitute a URL or key from another broadcast.
  3. For encrypted ingest, YouTube instructs users to use the RTMPS URL. RTMPS is RTMP carried over TLS. If you choose YouTube’s HLS ingest instead, select the HLS stream protocol and use the HTTPS ingestion URL generated for that setup.
  4. Keep the stream key secret. Anyone who obtains it may be able to publish to the event. Do not put a real key in a public script, screenshot, article, or shared command.

The available ingest choice and event settings determine what output FFmpeg must provide. Check the current settings in Live Control Room rather than assuming that all events accept the same audio-only arrangement or encoding.

3. Choose stream copy or transcoding

Use stream copy only when the source is compatible

Stream copy forwards encoded packets without decoding, filtering, or re-encoding them. It can avoid unnecessary processing and preserve the source audio as encoded, but it works only when the input stream and selected YouTube ingest configuration are compatible. FFmpeg also notes that stream copy may fail when the destination lacks required source information, and stream copy cannot apply filters.

Every uppercase value is a placeholder, not a real endpoint or key. The command illustrates the input-to-output structure; it is not a tested, universal command. In particular, the output format and stream-copy compatibility must be checked for your source and event. The example also assumes an audio stream is present at the selected input index and that this audio-only output is suitable for the event. The available evidence does not establish that every YouTube audio-only event configuration accepts this arrangement.

Transcode when conversion is required

If the source codec or output container is not compatible, FFmpeg must decode and encode the audio in a format accepted by the selected YouTube ingest configuration. Transcoding can enable conversion and filtering, but it uses processing resources and introduces a new encode. Check YouTube’s current ingest requirements and the source’s actual codec before choosing an audio codec, bitrate, sample rate, channel layout, or output format; there is no universal recipe established for every Shoutcast-to-YouTube setup.

Do not add arbitrary video settings to an audio-only relay. Whether the event requires a video-bearing feed, and how to provide one if needed, depends on its current configuration. Verify the requirement in Live Control Room before choosing an output pipeline.

4. Test the feed before starting the broadcast

  1. Start FFmpeg with the station URL and the event’s ingest details, keeping the stream key private.
  2. Watch FFmpeg’s console output for connection errors, input stream information, and signs that it is sending data. A running process alone does not prove YouTube is receiving a usable feed.
  3. Open the event’s Live Control Room preview. Confirm that the feed arrives and that the audio is audible and behaves as expected.
  4. Check any station metadata behavior you rely on. Metadata availability and usefulness vary by station; do not assume that the title or other ICY information will appear as YouTube broadcast metadata.
  5. Start the broadcast according to the event’s settings only after the preview and audio are satisfactory.

Keep the relay running and handle disconnects

The machine running FFmpeg must remain powered on and connected to the network while it relays the station. FFmpeg documents reconnection options for network errors and streamed inputs, and options for treating end-of-file as an error for endless or live sources. These can help with some input disconnects, but they do not guarantee uninterrupted service or recover every failure. Their behavior depends on the failure, FFmpeg build, and station; test the options against the actual stream rather than assuming a setting will cover every outage.

A relay can fail because the station stopped sending, the network connection changed, FFmpeg exited, or YouTube stopped accepting the feed. Check the console and the Live Control Room status to identify which side needs attention. A reconnection feature for the input does not by itself guarantee recovery of the YouTube output.

RTMPS or HLS?

Choice Setup When it fits
RTMPS Use the RTMPS ingest URL and stream key provided for the event in Live Control Room. The event is configured for RTMPS and the FFmpeg output is compatible with that ingest setup.
HLS Select HLS as the stream protocol and use the generated HTTPS ingestion URL. A workflow needs capabilities supported by YouTube’s HLS ingest and is configured accordingly.

HLS is another documented YouTube ingest protocol, not an automatic upgrade for a basic relay. Follow the setup for the protocol selected in the event rather than combining an HLS URL with an RTMPS-style command.

Common problems and what to check

  • FFmpeg cannot connect to the station: Confirm the exact stream URL, path, authentication details, and network access with the station operator. A station’s web player URL may not be its stream endpoint.
  • The input connects but no audio stream is selected: Inspect the input’s streams and verify the audio stream index. The example’s -map 0:a:0 assumes an audio stream exists at that index.
  • Stream copy fails or YouTube rejects the feed: Check source codec and output-container compatibility against the event’s current ingest requirements. Use transcoding only after selecting settings that meet those requirements.
  • The preview receives data but has no audible audio: Confirm that FFmpeg is mapping the intended audio stream and that its output is compatible with the selected event. Check the source directly as well as the YouTube preview.
  • The connection drops and does not recover: Determine whether the station input, local network, FFmpeg process, or YouTube output failed. Reconnection options may help with some network or input errors, but are not a guarantee; test the specific build and station.
  • The station title or metadata is missing: SHOUTcast/ICY metadata support does not mean every station supplies metadata or that YouTube will present it as broadcast metadata. Confirm what the station actually sends and what the event displays.
  • The event does not accept the audio-only feed: Check the event’s current ingest requirements and settings. The correct response may depend on whether that configuration requires a video-bearing feed; do not assume a universal workaround.

Copyright and YouTube channel considerations

Having access to a Shoutcast stream does not by itself establish permission to rebroadcast its audio on YouTube. Confirm that you have the rights and permissions needed for the music, performances, recordings, and any other material in the station feed. YouTube’s platform rules and the rights applicable to the content still matter when the audio is relayed rather than uploaded as a file.

Also review YouTube’s current channel and live-stream rules for your account and event. A technically successful relay does not guarantee that the content is eligible to remain live, be monetized, or avoid copyright claims. Do not treat a 24/7 format as an exception to those requirements.
