You can stream a prerecorded file through YouTube Live by sending it from an encoder to the stream URL and stream key shown in YouTube Studio. But YouTube’s documented “Backup server URL” instructions are for HLS, not RTMP. The available YouTube guidance does not establish a general procedure for sending one prerecorded source to both primary and backup RTMP ingest URLs. You can configure and test a primary stream, and you should verify any proposed RTMP failover setup in the current Live Control Room and encoder documentation before relying on it.
What you need to know about RTMP failover
YouTube’s standard encoder workflow uses a Stream URL and a stream key: the encoder sends its feed to the URL, authenticated with the key. YouTube recommends testing a backup encoder by stopping the primary and checking whether the player rolls over. It also recommends upload capacity for the primary feed plus the backup feed plus 20% headroom. Those recommendations do not, by themselves, explain how to configure a single prerecorded source to send simultaneously to two RTMP ingest URLs.
Do not copy YouTube’s HLS “Backup server URL” into an RTMP setup. The explicit backup-URL instructions are part of YouTube’s HLS setup, which uses different protocol requirements. Check the current Live Control Room and your encoder’s documentation for a supported RTMP backup configuration.
Set up the prerecorded stream in YouTube Studio

In YouTube Studio, choose Create → Go live. In Live Control Room, create or select the stream and open the Stream tab.

Copy the current Stream URL and stream key shown there. Treat the key as a credential: do not publish it or share it with anyone who should not be able to send video to your stream.

In your encoder, select its YouTube destination if available. Otherwise, paste the Stream URL into its server or RTMP server field and enter the stream key in the separate Stream Key field. Configure the encoder to play your prerecorded file. Exact field names and file-playback steps depend on the encoder; YouTube’s general setup guide does not document every third-party application.

Start the encoder and check for the incoming preview in Live Control Room. For a scheduled encoder stream, wait until the preview is present, then click Go live in Live Control Room.
Configure and verify a backup path
Confirm the protocol before using a backup URL
RTMP, RTMPS, and HLS are not interchangeable setup instructions. For RTMP, the documented generic encoder workflow uses the Stream URL and stream key. YouTube describes RTMPS as RTMP over TLS/SSL; in Live Control Room, use the lock control to reveal the RTMPS URL, then enter that URL and the stream key in the encoder. This explains secure endpoint setup, not a separate RTMPS failover procedure.

For HLS, YouTube says to select HLS as the stream protocol and copy the resulting Stream URL; if backup ingestion is needed, copy the HLS Backup server URL. HLS-specific requirements include TS segments and HTTPS POST/PUT, and HLS has higher latency because it sends video segments rather than a continuous RTMP stream. Keep these directions within an HLS configuration.
Test actual viewer rollover

Before the event, configure the primary and backup encoders or destinations using instructions that explicitly support your chosen protocol and equipment.

Start the test and confirm the stream is visible in the player or preview.

Stop the primary encoder, or disconnect its Ethernet cable, and check whether the player rolls over to the backup. YouTube’s instruction is to verify the player behavior; two encoder processes running is not proof that viewers will fail over.

Restore the primary setup and confirm the stream returns to the intended operating state before the event.
Size outbound capacity for both feeds at once, with YouTube’s recommended 20% headroom: primary plus backup plus 20%. The actual bitrate requirement depends on the configured feeds; YouTube’s cited guidance does not give one universal bitrate for this workflow.
Monitor the event and end the stream
During the broadcast, monitor stream health and check that both audio and video are behaving as expected. When finished, stop the stream using the applicable encoder and Live Control Room controls. YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived.
Common problems and fixes

No preview appears: Check that the encoder is using the current Stream URL and stream key from the correct Live Control Room stream, and that it has started sending the prerecorded file.

The scheduled broadcast is not public: For an encoder-created scheduled stream, wait for the preview, then use Live Control Room’s Go live control.

The backup URL or settings do not work with RTMP: Confirm the selected protocol. YouTube’s documented Backup server URL procedure is HLS-specific; do not treat it as an RTMP endpoint.

The backup is configured but viewers do not switch over: Repeat the failover test and verify player rollover after stopping the primary. A running backup process alone does not demonstrate that failover works.

Upload capacity is insufficient: Recalculate for primary plus backup plus 20% headroom, based on the configured feeds.
