To send a pre-recorded playlist to YouTube Live with GStreamer, build an application that selects each file, decodes and normalizes its audio and video, encodes a continuous output, muxes it as FLV, and sends it to YouTube’s ingest URL with rtmpsink. YouTube supplies the URL and stream key in Live Control Room. A single-file pipeline is only the first step: switching reliably between different videos requires playlist control and testing of timestamps, formats, and transitions.
How the GStreamer-to-YouTube workflow fits together
The output side is one encoded live stream: video and audio are encoded, combined into FLV, then sent through GStreamer’s rtmpsink to YouTube. The input side is where playlist logic belongs. Your application chooses a file, decodes it, and prepares its tracks for the same stable output profile as the other files.
- Select the next media URI under application control.
- Demux and decode the file’s audio and video.
- Convert and normalize tracks so differing source formats fit the output profile.
- Encode video and audio for the chosen YouTube-compatible profile.
- Link the encoded branches to
flvmux, then connect the mux output tortmpsink. - Configure the sink with the current server URL and stream key from YouTube Live Control Room.
GStreamer documents rtmpsink as an RTMP output element that accepts FLV content; it is provided by the RTMP plugin in GStreamer Bad Plug-ins. Its example, ffenc_flv ! flvmux ! rtmpsink, illustrates the mux/output relationship, not a complete YouTube-ready playlist pipeline. See the GStreamer rtmpsink documentation.
For one file, a conceptual design is uridecodebin (or filesrc ! decodebin) feeding separate video and audio conversion/encoding branches, both linked to flvmux, whose output feeds rtmpsink. This is a design outline, not a copy-and-run command: encoder element names and supported caps depend on installed GStreamer plugins and hardware.

Why a playlist needs more than multifilesrc
A playlist of arbitrary video files is not just a numbered file sequence. GStreamer describes multifilesrc as reading sequentially named files into buffers; that description does not establish that it schedules arbitrary video items, independently decodes heterogeneous files, or guarantees continuous timestamps at boundaries. See the GStreamer multifile plugin documentation.
For a playlist application, handle each end-of-stream event, open and decode the next URI, normalize its audio and video, and keep the encoded/muxed output coherent. A higher-level GStreamer playback or URI API plus application bus events can provide the source-control layer. The robust target is one stable encoded/muxed stream feeding one RTMP connection while sources change behind it.

Do not assume transitions will be seamless. Switching can expose timestamp discontinuities, audio gaps, encoder reinitialization, or YouTube ingest issues. Test transitions using the actual files and target machine before depending on a long-running or public broadcast.
Prepare GStreamer and YouTube Live
- Check the local installation. Confirm the target GStreamer build has the required demuxers, decoders, converters, encoders,
flvmux, andrtmpsink. The RTMP sink comes from Bad Plug-ins, so a minimal installation may not include it. Use GStreamer’s local inspection tools to check element availability and caps. - Create or select a YouTube stream. In YouTube Live Control Room, create or select the event/stream and copy its server URL and stream key. Follow YouTube’s current encoder workflow at Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder.
- Protect the key. YouTube treats the stream key like a password paired with the stream address. Keep it out of logs, shell history, source control, and screenshots. If it is exposed, reset it in Live Control Room and update your application. See Manage live stream settings.
- Use the current ingest URL. Prefer RTMPS, YouTube’s encrypted RTMP option, when the installed GStreamer/librtmp stack and endpoint configuration support it. Copy the exact URL from Live Control Room rather than reusing one from an old tutorial. YouTube’s current encoder guidance covers supported ingest protocols and settings: Choose live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions.
- Prove one file first. Use a short, rights-cleared clip, run the single-file path, and inspect the Live Control Room preview before adding playlist logic.
Choose an output profile
YouTube’s encoder-settings guide lists RTMP/RTMPS ingest; H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 video; AAC or MP3 audio; constant-bitrate encoding; frame rates up to 60 fps; and a recommended two-second keyframe interval that should not exceed four seconds. H.264 video with AAC audio is a conservative compatibility starting point, provided the necessary GStreamer encoders are installed.

| Setting | Practical starting point or YouTube guidance |
|---|---|
| Protocol | RTMPS recommended by YouTube where the installed output stack supports it; use the exact endpoint shown for the stream. |
| Video and audio | H.264 video and AAC audio are a conservative starting profile. YouTube also lists H.265/HEVC and AV1 video, and MP3 audio. |
| Bitrate mode | Constant bitrate (CBR), per YouTube’s encoder guidance. |
| Keyframes | Two-second interval recommended; do not exceed four seconds. |
| Frame rate | YouTube lists support up to 60 fps; choose a rate appropriate to the source and target output. |
| 1080p30 H.264 video bitrate | 5 Mbps minimum and 14 Mbps recommended in YouTube’s published settings. Other resolutions, frame rates, and codecs have different entries in YouTube’s guide. |
These are YouTube’s published settings, not a guarantee that a particular host can encode or upload them reliably. Leave upload headroom, check the actual encoded output, and monitor YouTube’s stream health rather than treating a configured bitrate as proof of stability.
Build and test the playlist in stages
Stage 1: Confirm local elements and media
Inspect the installed GStreamer elements and the caps each relevant decoder, converter, encoder, muxer, and sink accepts. Test decoding each source file locally. If the playlist mixes resolutions, frame rates, codecs, or audio layouts, decide on one output profile and normalize every item to it.

Stage 2: Send one short clip
Connect decoded video and audio through their conversion and encoding branches to flvmux, then send the muxed FLV to the YouTube endpoint with rtmpsink. Keep the stream key out of any command or diagnostic output likely to be saved or shared. If you use gst-launch-1.0 for a proof of concept, remember that GStreamer documents it as a basic pipeline/debugging tool and recommends the API for applications. See GStreamer gst-launch-1.0 documentation.
Stage 3: Check the YouTube preview and result
Before making the event public, inspect the Live Control Room preview for picture, sound, motion, resolution, and stream health. YouTube advises testing and monitoring audio/video quality. Review the recorded result too; a preview alone may not reveal every issue in a longer file.

Stage 4: Add source switching
Implement application-level end-of-stream handling and selection of the next URI. Test transitions between files with different codecs, dimensions, frame rates, audio layouts, and durations. Look for timestamp jumps, silence, black frames, output renegotiation failures, and encoder restarts.
Stage 5: Coordinate the event lifecycle
For a scheduled event, coordinate starting the encoder with YouTube’s preview and Go live controls, then stop the encoder and end the event using the current Live Control Room workflow. YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived; check current Live Control Room behavior and archive handling rather than assuming one connection can run indefinitely. Details can change, so use YouTube’s current encoder workflow.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Copyright and channel-policy checks
Only broadcast material you have the rights to use. A video file being prerecorded or locally available does not establish permission to stream it. Review YouTube’s applicable copyright and live-stream requirements before broadcasting, and use rights-cleared media for testing as well as public streams. Repeatedly looping content does not remove rights obligations or guarantee monetization eligibility; assess the channel and content under YouTube’s current policies rather than assuming that a technically valid RTMP feed is policy-compliant.
Troubleshoot common failures
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check or do |
|---|---|---|
rtmpsink cannot be found |
The RTMP plugin is absent from the installed GStreamer set. | Install/check the GStreamer Bad Plug-ins package for the target environment, then inspect available elements again. |
| Pipeline fails on caps or codec negotiation | The local build lacks a matching encoder or the source/output formats do not negotiate. | Check installed encoders and accepted caps; add conversion and explicit output caps supported by the chosen elements. |
| No YouTube preview or connection | Wrong/stale server URL or key, unsupported protocol setup, network issue, or stream-health error. | Copy the current URL and key from Live Control Room, verify RTMP/RTMPS support and network access, and read stream-health messages. Reset the key if it may have leaked. |
| Black picture or missing audio | A decode, conversion, branch-linking, or mux input issue. | Test audio and video branches separately, confirm both reach flvmux, then inspect the YouTube preview and recorded output. |
| Bad picture, silence, or a pause at a playlist boundary | Mixed source formats, timestamp discontinuity, an encoder restart, or an audio gap during switching. | Normalize sources to a common output, inspect timestamps and bus events, and test each transition before relying on the playlist. |
| Unstable bitrate or dropped frames | The chosen bitrate may exceed stable upload capacity, or encoding/network load is inconsistent. | Use the applicable YouTube bitrate guidance, leave bandwidth headroom, and monitor stream health during a real test. |
| A command-line demo works but the playlist is unreliable | A launch command does not provide production scheduling, transition handling, or recovery control. | Move playlist selection and lifecycle management into a GStreamer application using the API and bus events. |
