You can loop a media file with FFmpeg and send it to YouTube Live from a Windows Server, but the loop flag alone does not make the stream resilient or guarantee a single 24-hour replay. You need a verified, eligible YouTube channel, the ingest URL and stream key from Live Control Room, output settings matched to your media, and a plan to monitor failures and archive behavior.
What you need before you start
- A Windows Server that can stay online, with FFmpeg installed and built with the codecs and protocols required by your chosen output.
- A media file or playlist that you own or are licensed to broadcast continuously on YouTube. A license for personal or on-demand listening does not necessarily authorize a 24/7 livestream; check the specific rights and terms.
- A YouTube channel that is verified, has no live-streaming restriction in the previous 90 days, and meets YouTube’s stated minimum age requirement of 16. See YouTube’s live-streaming eligibility guidance.
- Enough stable upload capacity for the encoded stream, with extra headroom for network variation.
Prepare one representative file and test it before scheduling a long broadcast. FFmpeg options depend on the input’s codecs and dimensions, the output profile, the installed build, and the ingest protocol. The commands below are illustrative building blocks, not a tested Windows Server recipe.
Create the YouTube encoder stream and protect its key
- In YouTube Studio, open Live Control Room and create or schedule a stream. Choose the encoder workflow.
- Copy the ingest URL and stream key shown for that stream into your FFmpeg configuration. Use the RTMPS endpoint when Live Control Room provides one and your FFmpeg build supports it.
- Keep the key private. YouTube describes stream keys as “like your YouTube stream’s password and address.” Do not publish it in a script, screenshot, log, or support request. If it is exposed, reset it in YouTube Studio and update your encoder.
Use the actual endpoint and key from Live Control Room; do not assume an ordinary RTMP URL is encrypted. YouTube recommends RTMPS, which carries RTMP over TLS/SSL. See YouTube’s encoder stream settings and YouTube’s live encoder guidance.
Choose output settings for the media
For one specific profile—H.264 video at 1080p and 30 fps—YouTube Help’s 2026 guidance lists a recommended video bitrate of 5 Mbps. YouTube also recommends constant bitrate (CBR) and a 2-second keyframe interval, with keyframes no more than 4 seconds apart. These are not universal settings for audio-only streams, other resolutions, frame rates, or codecs; use the recommendation for the profile you actually send.

YouTube recommends at least 20% upload bandwidth headroom beyond the combined bitrate of primary and backup streams. For example, budget capacity above the total encoded bitrate rather than treating the nominal bitrate as the full connection requirement. Loop a file and send it to YouTube with FFmpeg
FFmpeg documents -stream_loop -1 for looping an input indefinitely. Place input options before the input file and output options before the output URL. A basic concept is:

ffmpeg -re -stream_loop -1 -i "C:medialoop.mp4" [encoding/output options] "<YouTube ingest URL>/<stream key>"Replace the placeholders with the exact ingest URL and key shown in Live Control Room and output options suited to the file. This example does not specify codecs, resolution, audio settings, or bitrate because those must be chosen for the actual media and YouTube profile. Do not paste a real stream key into a public document or shareable script.
Check that the installed FFmpeg build supports the selected codecs and transport. Verify that the resulting container and stream format are compatible with the selected YouTube ingest protocol. The command can repeat the input while FFmpeg is running; it does not automatically restart FFmpeg after a crash, recover every network interruption, or ensure YouTube continues accepting the same broadcast.

Test, monitor, and plan for recovery
- Start with a short test using the intended file, settings, and endpoint. Check the YouTube preview and wait for stream health to appear acceptable before making the broadcast public.
- Monitor both the server-side FFmpeg process and YouTube’s stream-health indicators. A healthy process does not prove that YouTube is receiving a healthy stream.
- Plan for separate failure points: the FFmpeg process can stop, the server can restart, the network can fail, the encoder output can be dropped, or YouTube can end the stream. An input loop addresses none of these by itself.
- FFmpeg’s FIFO muxer documentation includes an RTMP example using
-f fifo,-fifo_format flv,-attempt_recovery 1, and-recovery_wait_time 1. Treat these as recovery building blocks to validate with your deployed FFmpeg version and desired behavior, not as a universal uptime guarantee.
The available guidance does not establish a reliable Windows Server service, Task Scheduler, watchdog, or restart configuration. If you add process supervision or automatic startup, validate it on your own server, including what happens after a Windows restart and whether the stream is recreated correctly.

YouTube states that streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. Do not assume a single 24-hour broadcast will be saved as one replay. If a replay matters, plan stream length and rotation around YouTube’s archive guidance, and verify the resulting archive in YouTube Studio. See YouTube’s live stream archiving guidance.
