What you need before setting up gift cards
The documented route is for a WordPress site running WooCommerce. For version 2.0.0 and later of the official extension, WooCommerce lists PHP 7.4 or newer, WordPress 6.2 or newer, and WooCommerce 8.2 or newer as requirements, along with hosting that supports Action Scheduler. Requirements can change, so check the current Store Owner’s Guide before installing.

The WooCommerce Gift Cards extension creates prepaid, multi-purpose digital gift cards. It issues a unique code after an order and supports redemption at checkout or adding the balance to an account. It is not a physical-card or printed-voucher fulfillment system.
Set up a gift-card product
- Install and activate the extension. Its settings are available at WooCommerce > Settings > Gift Cards.
- Create the product. Go to Products > Add New. Choose a simple product for a single fixed amount or a variable product for several preset amounts, then enable the Gift Card setting. The extension uses standard simple and variable products rather than adding a separate product type.
- Choose recipient behavior. Configure whether cards must be sent as gifts, may optionally go to another recipient, or are sent to the purchaser’s billing email. Buyers can enter recipient details and a message. The extension’s product page also lists multiple recipients and scheduled future delivery.
- Review the recipient email design. Configure the image or design used in the email where needed, then save the product and settings.
Test purchase, delivery, and redemption
Before making the product available to customers, place a complete test order and follow the gift card from purchase through use. WooCommerce documents two redemption paths: a recipient can enter the code at checkout or add its balance to an account. See the Store Owner’s Guide and gift-card FAQ for the documented flows.

- Use your Visa Gift Card in the U.S. everywhere Visa debit cards are accepted, including online.
- Confirm the order completes using the payment gateway your store actually uses.
- Verify the code is created and arrives at the intended recipient’s email address, including any scheduled delivery behavior you enabled.
- Try applying the code at checkout and, where relevant to your store, adding the balance to an account.
- Check that the transaction and card appear in the extension’s administration tools.
Check background jobs and compatibility
Code creation and email delivery rely on Action Scheduler background processing. WooCommerce warns that disabled WP-Cron or failed loopback requests can prevent these jobs from running. If a card is not created or an email does not arrive, check scheduled actions, WP-Cron, and loopback operation before assuming the product settings are wrong.
Test with your actual theme, checkout, payment gateway, and other active extensions. WooCommerce documents some tested integrations but does not guarantee seamless operation with every third-party plugin or gateway. Its compatibility guidance is a starting point, not a substitute for an end-to-end test on your own site.

What the extension supports—and what it does not
- Digital codes: The extension sells virtual gift cards and delivers codes electronically.
- Gift-card product options: Use a simple product for one value or a variable product for preset values, with recipient details and a message.
- Administration: The product page lists tools to search and edit issued certificates, review transactions, see issued, used, and expired amounts, and import or export codes.
- No physical fulfillment: The documentation excludes physical gift cards and printed vouchers. If your business needs those, choose a different plugin or fulfillment process and verify how its codes work with online redemption.
How to assess other WordPress gift-card plugins
Other options exist. The WordPress.org listing for Gift Cards (Gift Vouchers and Packages) describes WooCommerce voucher sales and checkout redemption, while Gift Cards Pro documentation says that plugin works with or without WooCommerce. Those descriptions alone do not establish a complete feature, pricing, security, or compatibility comparison.
