To make a second monitor your main display in Windows 11, open Settings > System > Display, identify and select the monitor, then check Make this my main display under Multiple displays. If you want to use both screens as one desktop, set the display mode to Extend as well; that is a separate setting.
Set a monitor as the main display

Open Settings > System > Display.

If you are unsure which display tile matches the screen you want, select Identify. Windows shows a number on each detected monitor. Match the number to the physical screen.

Select the numbered tile for the monitor you want to make primary.

Expand Multiple displays if necessary, then check Make this my main display.

Selecting the monitor tile first matters: it tells Windows which display the setting should apply to. The checkbox may appear in a different place depending on your Windows build or device. Choose whether the screens extend or mirror
The primary-display assignment and the display mode do different jobs. The assignment marks one screen as main; the mode determines how Windows uses the available screens. Press Windows key + P to choose a mode:

| Mode | What it does |
|---|---|
| Extend | Spreads the desktop across displays so they act as separate parts of one workspace. |
| Duplicate | Shows the same content on all displays. |
| PC screen only | Uses only the PC screen. |
| Second screen only | Uses only the other screen. |
For two independently usable screens, choose Extend. Microsoft documents these projection choices in its external-monitor troubleshooting guide.
If Windows does not show the monitor

For a connected wired display missing from Settings, go to Settings > System > Display > Multiple displays and select Detect. For a missing wireless display, select Connect.

Check that the display cables are firmly connected to the PC or dock. If the display is still not detected, the graphics adapter or connection path may not support the number of screens you are trying to use; Microsoft recommends checking with the device or adapter manufacturer.

A basic splitter duplicates a single signal; it does not create two independent extended displays. See Microsoft’s connection troubleshooting guidance.

Fix the screen order if the pointer moves the wrong way
In Settings > System > Display, use Identify to map each number to a physical screen. Drag the display tiles so they match the monitors’ real left-to-right or above-and-below arrangement, then select Apply. Move the pointer across the edges to check that it crosses where you expect. Under Multiple displays, Windows also offers Remember window locations based on monitor connection and Minimize windows when a monitor is disconnected. These control window behavior when monitors are connected or removed; they are not required to change which display is primary. See Microsoft’s guide to using multiple monitors.
