Instagram does not provide a complete list of everyone who shared your post or Reel. If you use a Creator or Business account, you can see the total number of shares in Instagram Insights. You may also identify some people who publicly reshare your post to a Story or mention you, but private Direct Message shares, copied links, screenshots, and off-platform sharing are not exposed as a universal list of usernames.
The official way to check how many times your post was shared
To see Instagram’s share total:
- Open Instagram and go to your profile.
- Open the post or Reel you want to check.
- Tap View insights.
- Find the Shares metric in the Insights panel. It may appear alongside the paper-airplane or share icon.
The number represents share actions Instagram counted. It is an aggregate performance metric—not a directory showing which accounts sent the post to other people.
Meta groups shares with other content interactions, including likes, comments, and saves. The exact layout and available metrics can vary by account, device, geography, and Instagram’s feature rollout.
Can you see who shared your Instagram post?
Usually, no. Instagram does not give the original poster a complete, name-by-name list of people who shared a post or Reel through Direct Messages.

A person might send your post to one or more people privately, share it in a group conversation, copy its link, take a screenshot, or redistribute it outside Instagram. Those actions may contribute to traffic or engagement, but they do not create a reliable list of sharers that you can open from the original post.
Be especially cautious with websites and apps claiming that they can reveal every person who shared your post. If Instagram does not expose that information through its own creator tools, a third-party service cannot legitimately reconstruct private DM activity. Never give an outside app your Instagram password or login code to obtain a supposed sharer list.
What you may be able to identify: public Story reshares
There is a limited exception for some public Instagram Story reshares.
When someone adds your public post to their Story, Instagram normally preserves attribution to the original account and links viewers back to the original post. You may be able to identify the person if the Story is still active and visible to you, particularly if they mention or tag your account.
When someone mentions you in a Story, Instagram can show your username in that Story and send you a direct message or message request, depending on your relationship with that account. This is different from a private share: the mention creates a visible notification or message, while a private DM send normally does not identify the sender to the original post’s creator.
Some versions of Instagram may show a temporary View story reshares option, or a similarly named control, from the original post. Treat this as an optional, version-dependent feature rather than a guaranteed tool. It may not appear for your account, device, region, or post.

Why a Story reshare may not be visible
Not seeing a Story reshare does not prove that nobody shared your post. The Story may have:
- expired after its normal availability period;
- been posted by a private account;
- excluded a mention or tag of your account;
- been removed before you checked;
- used a feature that is not available to your account; or
- shared the post privately through Direct Messages instead.
Instagram’s Story-sharing flow also depends on the original account being public and allowing resharing. The feature is not available to every account or user.

Instagram Insights are available through professional accounts: Creator and Business.
| Account type | What you can generally see |
|---|---|
| Personal | No standard post Insights dashboard for share totals. |
| Creator | Post, Reel, Story, and account-performance Insights where available, including share data for eligible content. |
| Business | Post, Reel, Story, and account-performance Insights where available, including share data for eligible content. |
Professional accounts cannot be private. Switching from a personal account to Creator or Business therefore changes the account’s privacy characteristics.
What happens if you switch to a professional account?
Switching account types does not retroactively reveal the names of people who shared older posts. Meta’s documented Insights availability applies to content posted since the account became professional.
If you switch back to a personal account, in-app Insights access is removed. Meta says the data may be preserved for 90 days if you switch back to a professional account during that period, but you should not treat that as permanent historical access.

Sharing is not the same as reposting
Instagram introduced Reposts for public feed posts and Reels on August 6, 2025. Reposts are a separate feature from sending a post through Direct Messages or adding it to a Story.
- Share to DM: A private send to another Instagram user or conversation. The original creator should not expect to see the recipients.
- Share to Story: A temporary public or limited-audience reshare that may be identifiable when it is visible or includes a mention.
- Repost: A newer public feature for eligible public posts and Reels. It credits the original creator, may be recommended to the reposter’s friends and followers, and appears in a separate repost area on the reposter’s profile.
- Insights share count: An aggregate number of counted share actions, not a guaranteed list of accounts.
A repost is more public and persistent than a private DM send, but Meta’s announcement does not promise that the original creator receives a complete creator-side directory of every account that reposted the content.
What to do if “View insights” is missing
- Check your account type. Go to your profile and confirm that the account is Creator or Business rather than Personal.
- Open the individual post or Reel. Look for View insights on the content itself instead of relying only on the Professional Dashboard.
- Check when the content was published. Posts and Reels published before you converted to a professional account may not have the same Insights availability.
- Review the date range. Account-level Insights commonly offer selectable periods within the previous 90 days. Individual content can have separate availability rules.
- Update Instagram. Install the latest version available for your device, close and reopen the app, and check the post again.
- Allow for gradual rollouts. Instagram does not make every feature or metric available to every account at the same time.
If the post is eligible but the control remains absent, the issue may be an account-specific limitation or temporary Instagram problem. Reinstalling the app or using device-cleanup software will not reveal private share information; the relevant checks concern account type, post eligibility, date range, and feature availability.
What to do if someone cannot share your post to a Story
If another person says they cannot add your post to their Story, check the conditions for Instagram’s sharing flow:
Recommended Free Tools
- Your account generally needs to be public.
- Story resharing must be allowed for the account or content.
- The feature may not be available to that user or account yet.
Changing these settings cannot reveal past private shares, and it will not make expired Stories visible.

If you are measuring whether a post is being distributed, use Insights to track the total number of shares and compare it with reach, profile visits, comments, saves, and link activity. If you need to know which people are spreading the content, focus on the public signals Instagram actually exposes:

- public reposts, where the feature and account support them;
- comments or messages from people who voluntarily identify themselves; and
- referral or campaign data that you control, such as a unique link or promotional code.
These signals can help you understand distribution, but none should be presented as a complete record of every person who shared the post.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does Instagram notify you when someone shares your post?
Instagram does not generally notify the original creator about every private Direct Message share. You may receive a notification or message when someone publicly mentions or tags you in a Story, but this is not the same as receiving a notification for every share.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Can I see who shared my Reel?
You can see the total number of shares for an eligible Reel through View insights on a Creator or Business account. Instagram does not provide a complete list of the accounts that privately shared the Reel.
Can I see who shared my post to their Story?
You may identify some public Story reshares if they are still active, visible to you, or include a mention of your account. Instagram’s optional View story reshares control is not available consistently, so its absence does not prove that nobody reshared the post.
Will a third-party app show everyone who shared my Instagram post?
No trustworthy app can bypass Instagram’s privacy limits and reconstruct private DM shares. Avoid services that request your Instagram password, login code, or session credentials.
Do I need a Business account to see Instagram shares?
No. Both Creator and Business accounts can use Instagram Insights. Personal accounts do not have the standard professional Insights dashboard for post share totals.
The Bottom Line
Bottom line: Instagram lets professional accounts see how many times a post or Reel was shared, but not a universal list of who shared it. Check View insights for the total, then look for visible Story mentions, public Story reshares, or eligible public Reposts. Treat private DM shares, copied links, screenshots, and off-platform sharing as unidentifiable from Instagram’s creator tools.
