Enable Steam Guard’s mobile authenticator in the official Steam Mobile app, save its recovery code somewhere private, and add a phone number if you can. Then use Steam’s sign-in approvals carefully and keep every password and code to yourself. Steam Guard adds a second layer of protection beyond your account name and password; it does not make an account invulnerable.
What Steam Guard does
Steam Guard is Steam’s additional security layer beyond your account name and password. Its mobile authenticator generates a code that changes every 30 seconds and can be used once. You can also sign in by scanning a QR code or approving a prompt in the Steam Mobile app. Details: Steam Guard Mobile Authenticator and Steam’s explanation of Steam Guard.

Set up the mobile authenticator
- Install the official Steam Mobile app and sign in to your Steam account.
- Open Steam Guard and select Add Authenticator. Follow the prompts. You can enable the authenticator without adding a phone number; adding and verifying one provides extra recovery options.
- Write down the recovery code shown during setup and store it somewhere private and secure. Do not skip this step.
- Consider generating backup codes under Account Details → Manage Steam Guard → Get Backup Codes. Steam requires SMS verification for this. Steam recommends printing the codes rather than storing them on a computer or taking a screenshot.
Steam’s detailed setup and recovery instructions are in its Steam Guard Mobile Authenticator FAQ.
Choose a sign-in method and verify requests
Steam offers several mobile-authenticator sign-in flows. Use the one available on the sign-in screen, and check an approval request before accepting it.

Keep your account and codes private
- Never share your password, authenticator code, SMS code, recovery code, or backup codes. Steam says its Support staff will never ask for your password or authenticator code.
- Enter your credentials and codes only on Valve-run sites. Treat unexpected links or requests to sign in as suspicious.
- Do not run programs suggested in unsolicited email or chat to “clean up” or “optimize” Steam.
- If an approval request appears unexpectedly, do not approve it. Check the sign-in information rather than relying only on a notification.

Plan for a new or lost phone
Moving the authenticator to a new phone
If you still have the old authenticator, install Steam Mobile on the new phone, sign in, and choose Move Authenticator. If you no longer have the authenticator but can receive messages at the registered number, select the option indicating that the authenticator is no longer accessible and follow the in-app SMS transfer steps. Steam says a transfer applies a two-day restriction on trading and using the market.
If the phone and authenticator are lost
If possible, first ask your wireless provider to recover your phone number. If you cannot use the authenticator or recovery code, contact Steam Support to have it removed; Steam may request proof that you own the account, especially if you cannot access its associated email address.
Start with Steam’s lost or forgotten account recovery. Try self-recovery first; if it does not work, follow the process to send an intake form to Support and provide as much proof of ownership as you can.

Understand trade and market restrictions before changing protection
Adding the mobile authenticator does not immediately remove every trading or market hold. Steam says trades or market listings created before adding it, or within the first seven days afterward, are held for 15 days.
Removing the mobile authenticator is not a harmless troubleshooting shortcut: Steam says removal reduces account security, returns sign-in protection to emailed Steam Guard codes, and prevents trading or selling on the market for 15 days. See Steam’s instructions for removing the mobile authenticator before making that change.
Mobile authenticator or email codes?
Steam Guard email codes are an alternative, but the mobile authenticator offers app-based approvals, QR sign-in, and rotating codes. Removing the mobile authenticator reverts protection to email codes and carries the 15-day trade and market restriction described above. If you use the mobile authenticator, save recovery information and keep the registered phone number accessible so a device change is less likely to become a lockout.
