If your PlayStation Network (PSN) account was hacked, secure the email account tied to it first, then recover access through PlayStation’s official tools. Once you’re back in, change your sign-in method, sign out on all devices, check for unauthorized purchases, and restore two-step verification or set up a passkey.
1. Secure the email account linked to PSN
Your email account can be used to reset your PlayStation password, so secure it before starting recovery. Change its password to a strong, unique one; do not reuse a password that may have been exposed. If you cannot access or secure that mailbox, contact its email provider. PlayStation’s guidance on compromised accounts and unauthorized charges and account security best practices emphasizes protecting the email used as your sign-in ID.
2. Recover your PlayStation account
If you can access the linked email
- Go to PlayStation Account Management.
- Select Trouble Signing In? and then Recover Your Account.
- Follow the secure link and instructions sent to your email.
If the hacker changed your email or you cannot use it
If you no longer have access to the sign-in email, forgot which email is linked, or notice an unrecognized sign-in ID or password change, contact PlayStation Support through its Online Assistant. Account recovery may require support when the linked email or account details have changed.
Use only PlayStation’s official recovery and support channels. Do not give your password or verification codes to a third party claiming it can restore your account; PlayStation warns that scam messages may offer help after falsely claiming an account was reported.

3. Sign out on all devices and check account activity
End existing PlayStation sessions
After regaining access, open Account Management > Security > Sign Out on All Devices. Then change your account’s sign-in method to a new, unique password or passkey. PlayStation documents the all-device sign-out option in its sign-in and sign-out guidance.
Review purchases and payment details
Check your transaction history for unfamiliar charges. Follow PlayStation’s refund and cancellation guidance or contact support about unauthorized transactions or account changes you cannot make. Refund eligibility has limitations, so do not assume every charge will qualify.

If the compromised account was used on a stolen console, PlayStation recommends deactivating consoles after remote sign-out and considering removal of payment methods from the account.
4. Restore two-step verification or set up a passkey
If two-step verification is blocking sign-in
Use one of your two-step verification backup codes if you saved them. PlayStation provides 10 single-use codes; each code works once. If you do not have a usable code or cannot access the phone or mobile number receiving verification messages, contact the Online Assistant for two-step verification issues.

If you want to use a passkey
PlayStation supports passkeys and provides setup and management instructions under Account Management > Security. Its documented sign-in surfaces include PS5, PS4, the PlayStation website, PlayStation App, and Mac Remote Play. Compatibility caveats apply to some Android and Windows combinations and Mac Remote Play; check PlayStation’s passkey setup guide for current details. PlayStation also notes that some hardware security keys can have issues, so buying one is not a guaranteed recovery fix.

- Use a different, strong password for every account. A password manager can help generate and store unique passwords.
- Keep your recovery codes somewhere private but accessible to you.
- Do not share your PSN credentials, and avoid signing in on public or shared devices.
- Be wary of unexpected direct messages, QR codes, and sites promising free currency; do not enter your sign-in details on them.
- For purchase protection, consider enabling Require Password at Checkout in account settings. PlayStation notes that this option is incompatible with accounts using passkeys.
These precautions reflect PlayStation’s security best practices and passkey guidance. Support pages and interface labels can change; follow the live US PlayStation Support instructions if a menu or recovery option differs.
