The safest way to use OPay is to combine careful credential handling with a fast response plan. Keep your PIN, password, card details, OTPs and token codes private; use a unique password and non-obvious PIN; lock the account immediately if your phone is lost; block a missing card separately; and report suspicious transactions only through OPay’s in-app customer-service centre or contacts that OPay publishes itself.
OPay says its employees and agents will not ask for your password, PIN, card details, OTP or token code by phone or email. Treat any such request, including a request to make a “protective transfer,” as a scam.
The security rules that matter most
Most OPay account takeovers begin with a stolen credential or a convincing impersonation attempt, not with someone defeating the app’s underlying security. Apply these rules before dealing with any incident:
- Never disclose your OPay PIN, app password, card number, OTP or token-generated code to another person.
- Do not send credentials through a phone call, SMS, email, social-media message or chat, even when the sender claims to be OPay support.
- Use a strong, unique app password and a PIN that does not contain obvious personal information such as a name, birthday or a child’s name.
- Memorize the PIN instead of writing it on the card or keeping a duplicate where a thief could find it.
- Change the PIN periodically. OPay’s security guidance recommends an interval of about 60 to 90 days.
- Close the OPay app when you finish a session, particularly on a shared or borrowed device.
- If your phone is lost or stolen, dial
*955*131#immediately to lock the account. - If your OPay card is lost or stolen, dial
*955*132#to block the card, then contact OPay. - Check transaction history regularly and report discrepancies through the app or OPay’s published support channels.
These actions address different risks. A good PIN cannot protect an account if it is disclosed to an impostor, and a blocked card does not automatically replace the need to lock an account on a missing phone.

Build credentials that are difficult to guess or reuse
Choose a PIN without personal clues
Avoid numbers associated with you or your family. Names, birthdays, anniversaries, house numbers and repeated or sequential digits are easy for someone who knows you to try. OPay advises users to avoid obvious personal information when creating account credentials.
Do not use the same PIN for OPay and another service. Reusing a PIN means a compromise elsewhere can expose your OPay account. Select a number you can recall without writing it down, and never put it on the payment card, in the phone’s case or in an unsecured note.
Use a separate, strong app password
Your app password should be unique to OPay and different from your email, social-media and banking passwords. A long passphrase made from unrelated words is generally easier to remember than a short predictable pattern. Do not base it on your name, birthday, children’s names or other information visible on social media.
Do not share a password with a family member, agent or person claiming to be technical support. If another person needs to help, keep control of the login and complete the action yourself inside the official app.

Store and enter credentials safely
- Memorize the PIN. OPay specifically warns against writing it on the card or retaining an easily accessible duplicate.
- Keep the phone’s operating-system lock enabled so a finder cannot open the OPay app immediately.
- Enter credentials only in the OPay app or an OPay-controlled channel that you opened yourself. Do not use a link supplied in an unsolicited message.
- Close the app after completing a payment, transfer or support session.
- Never read an OTP or token code aloud to a caller. A code generated for your login or transaction is still a credential.
Change the PIN on a sensible schedule
OPay recommends changing the PIN every 60 to 90 days. Change it sooner if you suspect that someone saw it, if the phone or card was out of your control, or if you entered it on a page reached through an unexpected message. A scheduled change is useful only when the replacement is genuinely different; rotating between two familiar PINs provides little protection.
Recognize an OPay impersonation attempt
OPay’s published warning is explicit: “OPay Digital Services, its staff or agents will never contact you via phone call or email with a link requesting you to update your account or your passwords, token generated codes, card details or PIN.”
That rule gives you a practical test. A caller can claim to be from a fraud team, an agent can show a badge, and a message can copy OPay’s logo, but none of those details changes the rule: do not provide the requested secret or open the supplied link.

- “Tell me your PIN so I can verify your identity.”
- “Read the OTP or token code you just received.”
- “Send your card number, expiry date or security details.”
- “Click this link to update your password or prevent a block.”
- “Move the money to this safe or protective account while we investigate.”
End the call or chat, do not reply, and open OPay yourself. If you need help, start with the in-app customer-service centre or a phone number published by OPay, not with contact information in the suspicious message.

Why urgency is a warning sign
Scammers use a short deadline to stop you checking the request. Genuine support does not require you to surrender a PIN or one-time code to prove ownership. Pause, take a screenshot if useful, and verify through an independent OPay channel that you reached without using the message’s link or number.
What to do when your phone is lost or stolen
Act as though the finder may be able to unlock the device. The first objective is to stop access to the OPay account, not to search for the phone or negotiate with whoever has it.
- From another phone, dial
*955*131#to lock the OPay account immediately. - Contact OPay through the in-app customer-service centre on a device you control or through OPay’s published support contacts.
- Tell support when and where the phone went missing, which number was associated with the account, and any recent transaction details you can verify.
- Change the OPay password and PIN after the account is secured, using credentials that have not been exposed.
- Use your mobile-network provider’s process to suspend or replace the SIM if it was in the missing phone, and secure the phone through the device manufacturer’s lost-device tools.
- Review transaction history and report anything you do not recognize. Keep screenshots and reference numbers.
The USSD lock code is the urgent control. Do not wait for a support chat to answer before using it. A phone lock, SIM replacement or remote wipe can be useful additional measures, but they do not substitute for locking the OPay account.

*955*132#to block the lost or stolen card. - Contact OPay immediately using the in-app customer-service centre or OPay’s published helplines.
- Check recent transactions and identify the last legitimate card use.
- Report any unfamiliar payment with the date, amount, merchant description and transaction reference.
- Do not disclose the replacement card’s PIN or details to anyone who contacts you during the incident.
If both the phone and card are missing, use both codes: *955*131# for the account and *955*132# for the card. Blocking only one leaves the other exposure unresolved.
How to reach genuine OPay support
Use a channel that you opened independently. OPay’s published guidance directs customers to in-app customer service and lists these contacts for app and card queries:

Numbers and availability can change, so verify them against OPay’s current app or official published support page before relying on them. Never substitute a number copied from an unsolicited SMS, social-media post or caller ID.
How to verify that you are using the right channel
- Start from the OPay app you installed, rather than a message link.
- Compare a phone number with OPay’s own published contact information.
- Do not trust caller ID, a profile photo or a support badge as proof of identity.
- Support should not ask for your PIN, password, OTP, token code or full card credentials.
Review transactions and report unauthorized activity
Transaction monitoring is the way you discover misuse after a credential has been exposed or a card has gone missing. Make it part of your normal account routine, not only an emergency response.

- Open transaction history in the OPay app and look for payments, transfers, withdrawals or fees you do not recognize.
- For each discrepancy, record the date, amount, recipient or merchant description, transaction reference and the device or card involved.
- Capture screenshots showing the transaction status and reference. Keep them with any relevant message or call details.
- Report the issue through in-app customer service or an OPay-published helpline.
- Explain what you recognize and what you do not. Do not guess, alter records or send your PIN or OTP as “proof.”
- Follow the case through the same verified channel and keep the support reference for your records.
Report quickly, but do not let urgency push you toward an unofficial “support” contact. The safest report is one made from the app or a number you independently verified.

A routine that keeps the account safer
After every session
- Confirm that the payment or transfer went to the intended recipient.
- Close the OPay app.
- Do not leave an OTP, token message or transaction screenshot visible to others.
Once a month
- Review transaction history for unfamiliar activity.
- Check that your phone number and device remain under your control.
- Look for messages that imitate OPay and delete them without opening their links.
Every 60 to 90 days
- Change the OPay PIN, following OPay’s recommended interval.
- Choose a genuinely new PIN rather than a minor variation of the old one.
- Confirm that the app password is unique and not reused elsewhere.
Whenever something feels wrong
- Stop the conversation and share no credentials.
- Use the appropriate USSD lock code if a phone or card is missing.
- Open OPay independently, review transactions and contact verified support.
