Keep phones and other small valuables with a responsible person or in a lockable portable safe tethered to a suitable, permitted fixed object. Larger speakers and portable power stations need a different approach: keep them in sight or in a controlled area unless their design and the venue allow a safe, suitable attachment. No box, cable, or lock guarantees against theft.
Secure phones and small valuables
Phones left openly on a tailgate are easy to reach. Indiana DHS advises eventgoers to stay alert to theft opportunities and keep phones and other valuables as secure as possible (Indiana DHS, “Get Prepared: Event Safety”).
- Keep your phone with a responsible person when you are not using it.
- If you need to set it aside, use a lockable portable safe sized for the phone and other small items. Check the interior dimensions and how it opens before the event.
- Where venue rules allow, tether the safe’s cable to a fixed object that is suitable for the purpose. Treat the cable as a deterrent, not a guarantee; a tethered box can still be vulnerable.
SAFEGO describes its Barricade Black Portable Safe as a phone-and-valuables safe with a flexible steel cable for securing it around a fixed object. The maker calls the case water-resistant; that does not mean waterproof or theft-proof (SAFEGO, “Barricade Black Portable Safe”). A portable lock box with steel cable is a relevant option for small valuables, but check its actual capacity and whether its anchor is appropriate and permitted.
Secure speakers without assuming a small box will fit
A phone safe is not a solution for a full-size speaker. Check the speaker’s dimensions and weight, its manual for any intended security attachment point, and the venue’s rules before choosing a restraint or enclosure. Do not block controls, ventilation, or access needed for safe operation.

- Great tools at a great price
One limited example is CTA Digital’s ADD-BOX: the manufacturer describes a ventilated, padlock-compatible box for a Bluetooth speaker, battery pack, or small electronics. It measures 6.5 × 6.5 × 4 inches, has a 10 lb maximum capacity, and attaches to compatible CTA Digital floor stands (CTA Digital, “Locking Box Add-On”). Those specifications do not make it a universal tailgate speaker mount; verify both the fit and compatible stand before considering it.
If no suitable, permitted attachment is available, keep the speaker attended and within your group’s sight or place it in a controlled area. For an organized event, plan barriers and access control for the site rather than improvising restraints that could create hazards.
Protect a portable power station
The sources here do not establish a universal anchor method for securing portable power stations. Start with the specific unit’s manual: check its weight, shape, designated attachment points, ventilation needs, controls, and rules for outdoor operation. Do not drill into the case, cover vents, block controls, or strap the unit in a way that conflicts with its instructions.
Keep the station where your group can watch it, or in an area with controlled access when practical. Use a physical restraint only if the manufacturer’s instructions permit it, the anchor is suitable, and the venue allows the attachment. If those conditions are not met, supervision is the safer practical choice than an improvised lock.

Manage weather, cords, and access
The UK Health and Safety Executive says: “To prevent danger, construct or protect electrical equipment that could be exposed to rain or other adverse conditions with suitable and sufficient covers, enclosures or shelters.” Its event guidance also calls for planning power requirements and access control, using appropriately rated cables, and routing them to reduce trip hazards and damage (Health and Safety Executive (UK), “Electrical safety”; publication date not stated).
- Protect electrical equipment exposed to rain or other adverse conditions using protection suited to the equipment and its instructions.
- Route cables away from walking paths where possible; secure them appropriately so they are less likely to cause trips or suffer damage.
- Keep the equipment attended or limit unauthorized access where practical. At larger events, select barriers for the site layout, ground, weather, visitor numbers, and expected behavior—not as an improvised obstacle (Health and Safety Executive (UK), “Using barriers at events”).
If using extension cords in Ontario, the Electrical Safety Authority recommends outdoor-rated, grounded cords rated for the load, GFCI protection, and securing cords against trips or damage. Follow the electrical requirements that apply where your tailgate takes place; Ontario guidance is not a substitute for another jurisdiction’s rules (Ontario ESA, “Special Events and Celebrations”). That guidance also says generators should be outdoors in a dry, ventilated place away from tents and building openings if a generator is part of your setup.

Ask the venue or event organizer about electrical equipment, noise, attachments to fixtures or structures, and security devices. Permissions and quiet hours vary by location. For example, BC Parks permits portable power stations in its campgrounds, bars high-volume music, and sets quiet hours by campground; those rules apply to those parks, not to tailgates generally (BC Parks, “Camping and day-use guide”).
For organized events, the UK Security Industry Authority’s event-security page, last updated 10 March 2023, links to guidance for event-security suppliers; it is relevant context for planning access control, not a universal tailgating rule (GOV.UK/Security Industry Authority, “Security at events”).

Choose a security approach that fits the equipment
| Equipment | Practical approach | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Phone and small valuables | Keep them with a responsible person, or use a portable lock box with steel cable as a deterrent. | Interior dimensions, access method, suitable fixed anchor, and venue permission. SAFEGO describes its safe as water-resistant, not waterproof or theft-proof (SAFEGO). |
| Small electronics or compatible speaker | A stand-mounted locking box may work only when the device and stand are compatible. | CTA Digital’s ADD-BOX is 6.5 × 6.5 × 4 inches, rated for up to 10 lb, and attaches to compatible CTA Digital floor stands; it is not a universal mount (CTA Digital). |
| Full-size speaker | Keep it attended or in a controlled area unless it has a suitable, permitted security solution. | Actual weight and dimensions, manufacturer-provided attachment points, access to controls, and safe operation. |
| Portable power station | Keep it in sight or restrict access; use an attachment only when its manual and venue rules permit. | Manual instructions for attachment, ventilation, weather exposure, and controls; a universal anchor method is not established. |
