If your ASUS router’s VPN settings may have been changed or exposed, disable the questionable VPN profile, update the router using firmware for its exact model, and follow ASUS’s recovery sequence: factory-reset the router, complete Quick Internet Setup (QIS), then configure only the VPN service you still need. A reset clears settings; it does not prove who changed them or establish that every cause of the incident has been resolved.
First, contain the questionable VPN configuration
Disable the VPN profile if its server address, route, credentials, certificate, or imported configuration file looks wrong. If traffic is routing somewhere unexpected, temporarily disconnect sensitive devices while you regain control of the router.
A VPN client on the router routes network traffic through a VPN service; it does not automatically secure the router’s own administration settings. ASUS also notes that AiProtection cannot inspect traffic encrypted through an endpoint VPN. ASUS AiProtection Smart Security Setup Guide
Before changing anything, note the exact model and hardware revision, current firmware, whether the router was acting as a VPN client or server, and which settings appear unfamiliar. Those details determine the correct firmware and available menus; they are not established by the fact that a VPN configuration is suspect.

Get the right firmware and prepare for a reset
- Identify the hardware. Read the model and hardware revision from the router label or its administration interface.
- Check ASUS’s model-specific download page. Use the ASUS Download Center to find firmware and installation instructions for that exact router. ASUS recommends updating to the latest firmware in its VPN-client troubleshooting guidance. Do not install firmware from a third-party download site. ASUS VPN-client setup and troubleshooting
- Record what you need to reconnect. Have your ISP username and password, connection type, and any special ISP settings ready. Resetting removes current router settings, including internet setup, Wi-Fi name (SSID), and Wi-Fi password. ASUS router factory-reset instructions
- Do not restore a suspect backup. A saved configuration may reintroduce the questionable VPN or access settings. If you have a backup known to predate the incident, ask ASUS support whether it is suitable; ASUS’s reset guidance does not certify backups as safe after a compromise.
Reset the router and rebuild its connection
ASUS documents two reset routes. Use the Web GUI or app if you can still access the router’s controls; use the physical RESET button if settings access is unavailable. The exact menus and button behavior vary by model and firmware, so follow the manual for your router.
| Reset option | When to use it | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Web GUI or app | You can sign in and the reset control is available. | Use the reset-to-factory-default option in the interface. Menu labels vary by model and firmware; consult the model’s manual or ASUS support instructions. |
| Physical RESET button | You cannot access the settings, or the model’s instructions call for a button reset. | Follow the exact model’s manual. ASUS gives 5–10 seconds, until the power LED flashes, as an example; do not assume that timing applies to every router. |
Keep the router powered during reset and reboot. A computer connected to a LAN port by Ethernet is one way to access setup; it is not required for every model. ASUS’s VPN-client recovery advice is to restore factory defaults, complete QIS, and then set up the client again. ASUS reset instructions · ASUS VPN-client guidance

In ASUS Support’s VPN-client FAQ, last updated March 24, 2026, ASUS recommends updating firmware, restoring factory defaults, resetting according to QIS instructions, and then setting up the VPN client again when another device can connect to the VPN server but the ASUS router cannot.
Replace router and Wi-Fi credentials
During the clean setup, create a new, strong, unique router administrator password and a different Wi-Fi password. Do not reuse passwords that may have been exposed. ASUS recommends keeping those passwords separate and using WPA2-AES or WPA3, depending on what the router and connected devices support. ASUS advice on improving router security

- Triple-Level Game Acceleration - The GT-BE98 Pro boosts your PC gaming traffic every step of the way, from your PC gaming port all the way to the game server.
- Choose WPA3 when the router and your devices support it; otherwise, use WPA2-AES rather than a weaker compatibility mode.
- Keep the router firewall enabled.
- Disable WAN or remote access to the management interface, Telnet, and SSH unless you have a specific need for them.
- Use the router’s latest supported firmware and revisit these settings if a firmware update changes the interface.
If the VPN profile, router password, or Wi-Fi password may have been exposed, rotate the relevant credentials. Ask the VPN provider or network administrator whether exposed VPN credentials, certificates, or configuration profiles must be revoked or replaced; the provider-side process depends on the service.
Re-create only the VPN service you need
First establish which direction the VPN connection is meant to run. A VPN client connects the router to a VPN service or network; a VPN server lets remote users connect back to the network behind the router. Their settings and access credentials are not interchangeable.

If the ASUS router was a VPN client
Confirm the VPN type and current settings with the service provider or network administrator. Obtain a fresh profile from a trusted source, then follow the setup instructions for your model and firmware. ASUS calls the client feature VPN Fusion on some newer firmware; availability and behavior depend on router support. ASUS VPN-client setup instructions
If the ASUS router was a VPN server
Review whether remote VPN access is needed and whether the server should be enabled. ASUS’s supported server types vary by model and firmware. Its OpenVPN guidance describes separate server accounts and exported configuration files; if an old file may have been exposed, treat it as sensitive and ask the administrator to replace affected credentials or certificates. Review access and add supported protections
After setup, inspect the connected-device list and router settings for unfamiliar clients, VPN entries you did not create, unexpected port forwarding, or management access exposed through WAN. ASUS identifies unknown devices and unexpected setting changes as reasons to review router security. ASUS router-security guidance
On supported models and firmware, AiProtection can add router-side checks such as Router Security Assessment, malicious-site blocking, and intrusion-prevention features. Its availability varies; ASUS says it is not supported in AP mode, and some functions depend on firmware. AiProtection is an additional layer, not a substitute for firmware updates, a reset, and secure credentials. It also cannot inspect traffic encrypted through a device VPN. ASUS AiProtection guide
When a reset is not enough
A factory reset is a configuration-recovery step, not a forensic finding: it does not identify how settings changed or prove that a broader incident is over. Contact ASUS support and your ISP or network administrator if unfamiliar settings return after a clean setup, you cannot establish who has management access, or the router will not accept the official firmware or reset procedure. Whether to keep or replace the device depends on support for its exact model and advice from ASUS or the ISP; a suspected VPN configuration alone is not enough to establish that replacement is necessary.
