Secure an AI data center by controlling who can enter the facility and administer systems, separating infrastructure into trust zones, and monitoring the traffic and actions that cross those boundaries. The design must protect data, software, hardware, and the availability of both AI workloads and supporting facility systems.

NIST’s AI-data-center guidance, SP 800-239, was published on July 27, 2026, as an initial public draft—not a final standard. Its public-comment deadline was September 25, 2026; consult the NIST page for any subsequent status update. NIST also describes AI security and resilience as an active research area in its AI Research — Security and Resilience page, updated August 14, 2026.

What should an AI data-center security plan protect?

An AI facility combines familiar enterprise systems with specialized infrastructure for model training, inference, and related applications. Its security plan needs to account for the different hardware, software, workflows, and storage involved—not assume that a conventional office or cloud security layout will fit unchanged. NIST’s draft SP 800-239 examines AI data-center threats and security gaps and offers basic recommendations.

Start with three outcomes: prevent unauthorized access, limit how far a compromise can spread, and gather evidence that helps staff detect and investigate suspicious activity. Apply those outcomes to compute and accelerator resources, data and storage, management systems, user-facing services, external connections, and building systems that support the facility.

How should you control physical and administrative access?

Treat facility entry and logical administration as separate control problems. A person authorized to enter a building does not automatically need access to a server room, and physical presence should not grant broad system privileges.

Control entry to sensitive spaces

Use authorization appropriate to a person’s duties for sensitive areas, handle visitors deliberately, and keep access records that can be reviewed. NIST’s SP 800-82 Rev. 3 Guide to Operational Technology (OT) Security identifies physical access-control systems as relevant OT components; it is general OT guidance, not an AI data-center badge or visitor checklist. The sources do not establish a universally required credential technology, biometric method, or staffing model, so choose controls to fit the facility’s risk and operating requirements.

Constrain privileged sessions

For system administration, assign permissions by role and grant only the access needed for the task. Require strong authentication, route administrative work through approved, managed entry points, and make privileged activity reviewable. Review access periodically so role changes, departing staff, and temporary exceptions do not leave unnecessary permissions in place. NIST’s final SP 800-215, Guide to a Secure Enterprise Network Landscape, provides a foundation for secure network access and zero-trust approaches.

Keep facility operations in scope when designing either kind of access control. Building automation, environmental monitoring, and access systems may be OT, and their security measures must respect reliability, performance, and safety requirements. A control that disrupts cooling, power, or another facility function can create operational harm; NIST discusses these considerations in SP 800-82 Rev. 3.

How do you segment an AI data-center network?

Build boundaries around actual functions and required communications. First inventory systems and map the data flows between them. Possible zones include management and control planes, administrative workstations, user-facing services, training and inference compute, storage, external connectivity, and facility OT where present. This is an example design starting point, not a taxonomy mandated by NIST.

For each zone, record which connections are needed, which systems initiate them, and why. Enforce those decisions with controls such as router access-control lists (ACLs), stateful inspection, firewalls, demilitarized zones (DMZs), and virtual LANs (VLANs). CISA recommends these approaches as defense in depth in its Enhanced Visibility and Hardening Guidance for Communications Infrastructure. Deny unnecessary flows and log denied traffic so policy violations can be examined.

Choose the boundary that fits the risk and workload

Control layer Useful for Trade-offs to assess
VLANs, ACLs, firewalls, and DMZs Separating broad network functions and controlling traffic between zones. Rules must stay accurate as systems and flows change; broad zones may not isolate individual workloads.
Microsegmentation Applying finer-grained boundaries to workloads or systems where broader separation is insufficient. More granular policy can increase configuration and operational complexity.
Identity-aware access, including zero-trust network access (ZTNA) Controlling user or administrator access based on identity and approved access policy. It complements network separation rather than replacing workload, infrastructure, or facility controls.

NIST SP 800-215 discusses microsegmentation and ZTNA among secure enterprise network approaches. These methods are not interchangeable: network segmentation establishes separation between systems or zones, while identity-aware access governs who can reach a resource. Organizations may use more than one layer.

Before enforcing a boundary on accelerator fabrics, storage paths, or other high-performance traffic, validate it against real training and inference workflows. Do not assume that a control suitable for an ordinary enterprise network will fit every interconnect. Compare candidate designs by isolation strength, performance and reliability, visibility, operational burden, and how well a compromise is contained; the cited guidance does not rank specific vendors or products.

How do you keep segmentation effective?

A network diagram and its policies are only useful if they match the deployed environment. CISA warns that user error and policy non-adherence—including connecting devices across segments—can defeat segmentation. Its 2023 guidance on common cybersecurity misconfigurations reinforces the importance of avoiding configuration weaknesses.

  • Maintain current network and data-flow diagrams, including approved connections and exceptions.
  • Review ACL and firewall changes before deployment; document the owner, reason, scope, and expiry of exceptions.
  • Secure management interfaces and apply consistent configuration baselines to network devices.
  • Test boundaries against real workflows after changes and periodically thereafter, including whether prohibited paths are actually blocked.
  • Treat segmentation as containment, not a replacement for endpoint hardening, identity controls, patching, or incident response.

What should you monitor in a GPU cluster and its surrounding systems?

Collect and correlate logs centrally from network devices, hosts, relevant cloud services, and access systems. Protect retained logs against unauthorized alteration or access, and retain enough evidence to support investigation. CISA’s #StopRansomware Guide recommends securing logs and notes the value of intrusion detection for identifying command-and-control and other suspicious network behavior.

Prioritize visibility where trust changes: administrative access, traffic between segments, external ingress and egress, configuration changes, authentication failures, and unusual data movement. These are practical monitoring priorities rather than a verbatim official checklist. CISA’s communications-infrastructure guidance also recommends logging denied traffic, which can help reveal unexpected attempts to cross boundaries.

Alerts need an owner and a response path. Set up workflows so staff know who assesses a signal, how to preserve relevant logs, and when to escalate. Tune collection and response to respect the latency and reliability needs of high-performance systems and facility OT; monitoring should improve detection without destabilizing critical operations.

How should you put the controls into practice?

  1. Map assets and dependencies. Inventory compute, storage, management systems, user-facing services, external links, administrative workstations, and relevant facility OT. Record essential communications and operational dependencies.
  2. Set access rules. Define who may enter each sensitive area and who may administer each system. Establish approved management paths, strong authentication, role-scoped permissions, and a schedule for access review.
  3. Design and enforce trust zones. Group systems by purpose and criticality, specify required flows, then implement suitable boundaries with ACLs, firewalls, VLANs, DMZs, microsegmentation, or identity-aware access.
  4. Validate performance and containment. Test allowed workflows and blocked paths, including required training, inference, storage, and facility functions. Correct unexpected impact before relying on the boundary.
  5. Monitor and improve. Centralize protected logs, alert on meaningful boundary crossings and administrative events, assign response owners, and update diagrams and policies as the environment changes.
