To secure a private or paid video, authenticate the viewer and check their entitlement on a trusted backend, then issue a short-lived signed URL, signed cookie, or video-platform token. Configure the CDN or video service to enforce that authorization for every playback request, not just the HLS or DASH manifest. Keep the origin private and deliver credentials over HTTPS.

How signed access protects a video

A signed URL is a bearer credential: anyone who obtains it can use it within its scope until it expires or is revoked. It does not prove that the current requester is the person who originally signed in. The application must make the access decision before a trusted backend or managed signing service creates the credential.

Adaptive playback is a sequence of HTTP requests. An HLS or DASH player may request a manifest, video and audio segments, alternate renditions, and later retries or range requests. If only the manifest is protected, the media files may remain exposed—or playback may fail when the player cannot authorize them. The chosen mechanism must cover every required resource.

Choose the right authorization pattern

Pattern When it fits Tradeoffs to check
Signed URL per file A single restricted object, a download, or a client that cannot use cookies. Each protected request needs a valid URL. Ensure the manifest and all referenced objects are covered; rewriting URLs may be necessary.
Signed cookie A session needs several restricted CDN files, such as HLS assets, and the player handles cookies. Can authorize multiple resources without rewriting every URL. Test cookie behavior across supported browsers and native players.
Prefix-scoped signed policy or cookie The provider supports a policy that covers a URL prefix and an expiry. Useful for a family of media objects, but keep the allowed prefix as narrow as possible.
Managed video token A hosted video service provides token issuance and tokenized playback URLs. May reduce CDN and origin configuration work, but token lifetime, download controls, and integration options depend on the provider.

Before choosing, check how many resources a playback session requests; whether each target player supports cookies and redirects; whether URLs must be rewritten; how expiry interacts with refresh, retries, and buffering; and how the origin is protected. IP or geographic restrictions and key rotation can add controls, but their availability and behavior vary by provider.

  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Secure playback implementation

  1. Require authorization at the delivery layer. Store media behind a CDN or hosted video service configured to require signed access. If object storage is the origin, block direct public access where feasible so users cannot bypass the CDN.
  2. Authenticate and authorize in your application. When a viewer requests a video, validate their session and check the relevant purchase, subscription, membership, or other entitlement. Do not treat possession of a video ID as proof of permission.
  3. Sign on a trusted backend. Create a narrowly scoped credential with an expiry. Keep private signing keys and API credentials out of browser and mobile code; anyone who extracts a signing key may be able to mint credentials.
  4. Deliver it securely. Return the signed URL or set the signed cookie over HTTPS. For a hosted service, first configure the video to require signed playback, then use its token endpoint or signing key as documented by that provider.
  5. Cover the complete playback path. Verify that authorization reaches the manifest, segments, alternate renditions, and any other files the player requests. Test the actual browsers and native players you support.
  6. Set expiry for real playback behavior. Balance link-sharing exposure against buffering, clock differences, network interruptions, and reconnects. If a legitimate session can outlast the credential, provide a secure refresh path.
  7. Test both allowed and denied requests. Check permitted playback, unauthorized access, expired and modified credentials, and direct-origin requests. Confirm that failures are denied without leaving an unprotected alternate path.

Provider-specific considerations

Amazon CloudFront

CloudFront uses an application’s entitlement decision followed by a signed URL or cookie that CloudFront validates. Its canned and custom policies offer different controls; custom policies can specify a not-before time and IP range as well as expiry. AWS documents RSA 2048 and ECDSA 256 keys for signed URLs and cookies. Read AWS’s signed URL guidance.

AWS recommends signed cookies when access is needed to multiple restricted files, including HLS video files; signed URLs suit individual files or clients that do not support cookies. Use origin access control where appropriate to prevent direct S3 access from bypassing CloudFront. CloudFront checks expiry on each HTTP request, so a later range request can fail after expiry even if an earlier request began before it. Do not append query parameters after signing: AWS warns that parameters must be included in the signed portion or the request returns 403. See AWS’s comparison of signed URLs and cookies and its private-content overview.

Cloudflare Stream

Cloudflare says, “By default, videos on Stream can be viewed by anyone with just a video id.” Its Stream documentation, displayed as last updated May 7, 2026, explains that enabling requireSignedURLs prevents public-ID playback and requires a signed token. That token can be used in HLS and DASH manifest URLs. Check Cloudflare’s current Stream security documentation before implementation.

Cloudflare documents that calling the token endpoint without a body returns a token that expires in one hour, with no other restrictions or download access. Custom claims can change expiry and access restrictions; setting downloadable can enable MP4 or audio download URLs. These are Cloudflare-specific behaviors, not general defaults for signed video access. Tokens can be generated in an application with signing keys or through a Worker binding.

Google Cloud CDN and Media CDN

Google Cloud CDN signed URLs are time-limited and usable by anyone who possesses them. A URLPrefix can cover multiple URLs. Google specifically describes signed cookies for HLS and DASH because signing each segment and rendition URL per viewer can burden the application and increase origin load; a cookie can cover a URL prefix and expiry without rewriting every manifest URL. Google recommends HTTPS for signed URLs and secure transport when distributing them. Anyone with a signing key can create accepted signed URLs or cookies until the key is deleted. See Google’s guidance for signed URLs and content access control.

Media CDN recommends accounting for clock synchronization and network retries when setting timestamps. Its documentation says to set timestamps no less than one minute into the future or no less than the length of the video stream, whichever is greater. Confirm the current service-specific syntax and behavior in Google’s signed requests documentation.

Common failures and fixes

  • The manifest loads but playback fails: The player may be unable to fetch segments or alternate renditions with the required credentials. Extend authorization to every resource, or use a cookie or prefix policy supported by your player and provider.
  • Protected CDN content is still reachable: The origin may be public. Restrict direct origin access so requests must pass through the authorization-enforcing delivery layer.
  • Users can forge access: Signing may be happening in client code or a private key may have leaked. Move signing to a trusted backend or managed service and rotate exposed credentials.
  • A shared link continues to work: A copied bearer URL remains usable within its scope and validity window. Use a suitably short lifetime and supported scope restrictions; do not expose tokens unnecessarily in logs or other systems.
  • A stream stops after playing for a while: Later segment, range, or retry requests may arrive after expiry. Test the provider’s request behavior and implement refresh for legitimate sessions that outlast the token.
  • A signed request returns an error: The URL, path, or query may have changed after signing, or the request may fall outside the policy. Sign the exact resource and required query parameters according to the provider’s rules.

What signed URLs do not protect against

Signing controls who can fetch a stream; it is not DRM and does not prevent an authorized viewer from recording or redistributing decoded playback. Treat it as an access-control layer, not copy protection. If preventing capture or redistribution is a requirement, evaluate a separate rights-management approach rather than promising that URL signing can stop it.

Or let it run in the cloud

StreamNeo is for a different job: keeping an uploaded video or playlist live on a YouTube channel 24/7, not securing private HLS or DASH playback for an application. Upload a recording, add your YouTube stream key, and go live; StreamNeo loops it in the cloud, so nothing has to stay on at home. Each slot streams the upload as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot, with automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly is $9.99 per month.
