If you suspect a self-hosted Zammad instance has been compromised, first limit ongoing access through your organization’s incident-response process and preserve useful evidence where feasible. Then establish the installed version, check Zammad’s current security advisories, investigate logs and exposed credentials, patch and rotate affected secrets, and restore from a known-good backup only if the incident warrants it. The vendor documents important Zammad-specific log and recovery issues, but not a complete forensic or return-to-service procedure; the operational steps below distinguish those general recommendations from Zammad’s published guidance.
1. Contain access while preserving evidence
Use your organization’s incident process to decide how to limit access. The right action depends on the evidence, the deployment, and what would be disrupted by isolation. Avoid applying a one-size-fits-all firewall rule or shutting down services before considering whether doing so could destroy evidence or interrupt dependencies.
Where feasible, preserve relevant host, Zammad application, reverse-proxy or web-server, identity-provider, and infrastructure logs before cleaning or rotating anything. Restrict access to collected evidence, record when and how it was collected, and avoid putting live credentials into incident reports. Keep a timeline of observed indicators, decisions, and changes, including which systems and accounts may be affected. These are general incident-response recommendations, not a forensic protocol prescribed by Zammad.
Zammad’s ZAA-2025-07 advisory specifically recommends reviewing existing log data and, if necessary, cleaning it—including in connected systems that process the logs. Treat cleanup as remediation after appropriate evidence preservation, rather than as the first response. The vendor’s wording is: “For self hosted installations, we strongly advise admins to not only update but also review and, if necessary, clean up existing log data – including in any connected systems that process these logs.”

2. Identify your version and check current advisories
Record the installed Zammad version, installation method (such as packages or Docker Compose), and deployment layout. Check Zammad’s official release information and security advisories before deciding whether a particular vulnerability applies or which upgrade to install. Zammad announced on April 8, 2026 that GitHub is its central location for security advisories; advisory details and fixed-version information should be checked there.
As of October 4, 2026, Zammad’s official release index listed version 7.2, dated September 23, 2026, as the latest release. The index also listed 7.1.3, dated August 25, and 7.1.2, dated August 4. This is a dated snapshot, not a guarantee that 7.2 is still the latest or that it is the right target for every installation. Recheck the release page and GitHub Security Advisories when responding.
Version history can help frame the investigation, but a release date alone does not show that an instance was exposed or exploited:

- ZAA-2025-07 described sensitive information, including private keys, certificates, and passphrases, being written to Rails logs in 6.5.x; the advisory listed 6.5.2 as fixed.
- ZAA-2026-01 described API tokens, secrets, and other credentials being retrievable from browser context or API in affected 6.5.x versions; the advisory listed 7.0.0 as fixed and said sensitive fields were changed to masked values.
- ZAA-2026-04 described unauthorized API access to internal import-status metadata; the advisory listed 7.0.0 and 6.5.3 as fixed.
- Zammad’s August 25, 2026 notice for 7.1.3 urged self-hosted installations to upgrade and listed patched issue classes including an SSRF protection bypass and disclosure and access-control defects.
These summaries do not replace checking each advisory’s affected-version scope and fix details against the installation. Zammad’s release index describes a tamper-proof Admin Audit Log as part of 7.2, but the presence of that feature alone does not establish an incident timeline or prove that an instance was uncompromised.

Which records to review
Review retained Zammad Rails and application logs, relevant startup logs, reverse-proxy or web-server logs, and systems that collect, process, or retain those records. The log locations and retention periods depend on the installation. Preserve relevant copies before any cleanup, and keep any discovered sensitive data tightly restricted.
Zammad’s ZAA-2025-07 advisory says to scan for recognizable parts of secrets, such as API keys, S/MIME certificates, or PGP keys. Look for exposure indicators without copying live values into broadly accessible notes or tickets. The advisory also says to clean affected log data and consider rotating secrets if exposure is plausible.

Specific documented exposure paths
- Rails logs: ZAA-2025-07 described private keys, certificates, and passphrases in Rails logs for affected 6.5.x versions.
- Startup logs: ZAA-2026-02 documented a startup log entry containing
REDIS_URL, which could include credentials. Check the advisory’s affected-version scope before treating this as applicable to your installation. - HTTP request records: ZAA-2025-09 described complete HTTP requests, including tokens and secrets, being stored by the
HttpLogsubsystem in the database. Zammad said this was prevented and existingHttpLogrecords were cleaned up in the fixed release. Verify the fixed version and applicability in the advisory. - Admin-interface credential exposure: ZAA-2026-01 described API tokens, secrets, and other credentials being transmitted to the client in affected versions. Check its fixed-version details before assessing whether browser context or API access could have exposed credentials.
Do not infer that a secret was stolen solely because it may have been logged or accessible. Conversely, absence of a visible indicator in one log source does not establish that there was no exposure; retention, forwarding, and system access vary.
4. Patch, rotate secrets, and review surrounding access
Apply the appropriate security update
After evidence is preserved and you have a recoverable plan, update using the procedure for the actual installation type. Zammad’s release documentation links to separate package and Docker upgrade instructions. Do not use an update command intended for a different deployment method, and do not assume an older version is safe simply because it once received a patch. Check current advisories and release information for the recommended target and any upgrade prerequisites.

- Zammad API tokens and integration credentials;
- mail and identity-provider credentials used by or connected to Zammad;
- database or Redis credentials if their exposure is plausible;
- private keys or certificates if logs, client access, or other evidence suggests they were exposed.
Use each dependent service’s safe rotation procedure. Coordinate the change, revoke old values where supported, update dependent systems, and confirm that the replacement credentials work. Avoid changing credentials in a way that destroys evidence or locks out responders before the incident team has planned for it.
Review who and what can access the instance
As general post-incident hardening, review administrator and agent accounts, permissions, active integrations, authentication paths, exposed network routes, and monitoring for recurrence. The advisories document issues involving credentials, API access controls, and information disclosure, but do not prescribe a universal account-review workflow or firewall configuration. Choose controls that fit the installation and verify them against the current version and architecture.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.5. Decide whether to rebuild or restore
A patch-in-place may be appropriate when the response team has confidence in the host’s integrity and understands the scope of the incident. If host integrity or persistence cannot be trusted, a clean rebuild may be more appropriate. These are incident decisions, not a choice resolved by Zammad’s product documentation. Select a recovery point believed to predate the compromise, and assess its date, integrity, access history, and possible exposure before using it. A backup’s existence does not prove it is uncontaminated or complete.

Docker Compose restore caveats
Zammad’s documented backup and restore procedure applies specifically to Docker Compose. It says the built-in backup is stored in the zammad-backup container volume under /var/tmp/zammad; the scheduled default is 3 a.m. in the local deployment context described by that documentation. Follow the current procedure for the deployed version rather than applying these paths to package, source, or Kubernetes installations.
The Docker Compose restore instructions include several details that can affect recovery:
- Stop the stack before restoring.
- For a restore into a production stack using file-system storage, purge the target
/opt/zammad/storage/content first. The documented restore adds or overwrites files but does not remove stale files from that target directory. - The process uses the latest timestamped backup placed in the restore directory, so verify that the intended backup is the one selected.
- Rebuild the Elasticsearch index after restoration, as the documentation instructs.
These are mechanics from Zammad’s Docker Compose documentation, not a guarantee that a particular backup is suitable for incident recovery. Evaluate its trustworthiness separately.
6. Validate before restoring normal access
Before reopening broad access, use an operational validation checklist appropriate to the installation. This is a recommended response practice, not a complete checklist published by Zammad:
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Confirm that the intended Zammad version is running and that no relevant advisory remains unaddressed.
- Check expected administrator and agent access, authentication paths, and permissions.
- Test integrations and dependent services after credential changes.
- Verify ticket and attachment availability, background processing, and relevant logs.
- Confirm that monitoring is active and that suspicious activity does not recur as access is restored.
Document what was restored or changed and continue monitoring under the incident plan. If the incident is confirmed, broad in scope, or beyond the team’s forensic capability, involve qualified incident-response or forensic support; the cited Zammad guidance does not define a complete forensic service or recovery workflow.
